She looks very much like what the average Portuguese woman looks like now, with variations of course, in hair and eye color, with a bigger or smaller face, etc… Even mixed race I have a few of those traits as well. I could swear that I see her every other day in Portugal A FEW times a day. And have a couple of close friends who look like her, one is a brunette and the other is a red head. She just has a very typical Portuguese face. And in Portugal she is Isabel, not Isabella. Great job with the depictions as always 👍

Duchess of Burgundy. PLUS ULTRA 🇪🇦 Isabel de Portugal, was a beautiful and extremely humble woman, power never corrupted her, despite being Empress and Queen. She protected the American Indians with all her power from the abuses of the Spanish Conquerors, facing Emperor Charles on several occasions, who did not consider him important. After her death, Emperor Charles, to honor the memory of his wife, protected the indigenous people.

God, she looks almost like Catherine of Aragon. I know, aunt and niece, but it still surprises me how much women in that family looked alike. Too bad in so many portraits their hair darkened and no longer show the golden strawberry blond hair they had. Isabella I,Juana I, Catherine of Aragon, Empress Isabella; Catherine, Queen of Portugal; Mary I , and I am sure some other of their relatives too.

@@Fati.FerreiroAll but one of Juana's potrait darkened(hair did), it's common phenomenon occuring in many mpotraits from 15th and 16th century. Basically chemical reaction occurs which makes hair pigment go dark brown(regardless of what sitter's original haircolour was). Modern conservation cannot reverse it. Because not that many people know of this phenomenon, they assume sitter had brown hair. But we can confirm from period description of royalty that many didn't have brown hair. It is case with Isabella I for certain, none of decription of her throughout her reign says she has brown hair and Juana was never described as brunnet either in her lifetime.

These potraits were heavily beautified according to the era's beauty standards that's why almost everyone in the royal or upper class families looks the same...also the "beautiful" royals were actually very average even sometimes below average looking but due to their wealth and privileges common folks used to idealize them...

​@@swastikqjana7128 I both agree and disagree with you. I don't think everybody in royal or upper class portraits looks same. Certainly not in Tudor times, on which I focus on. (At least when it comes to originals, maybe you've been looking at copies and don't know it.) I agree some royalty had been painted as betterlooking(Phillip the 'Handsome' got mocked for his ugly looks with his nickname, yet in most of potraits he is not nearly as ugly as in life) and Elizabeth I(espeically later in life), but some didn't care. You can spot long nose of Francis I in his potraits, ugly features of Emperor Maxmilian I, or how grief-striken Isabella I of Castile is in her grieving potrait and how her features point to her health failing. Henry VIII was also painted ugly towards end of his life(but Holbeins painted him from front, angle in which he didn't look as bad as in sketches from side). On other hand, the angle in which Tudor nobility was painted is least fortunate when it comes to nose. Try before mirror, it really makes nose look twice as large. So I don't agree that everybody 'fixed' their potraits. I trully don't. But I do think people lied about beauty of royalty in the past to flatter them. Yet in late 15th and early 16th century there was surprising amount of rather good-looking royals(at least in comparison to the ugly royals alive at same time). It's not always obvious in paintings though. Either because painter wasn't that good(some really couldn't paint face well), because it is unrealistic copy or because our view of beauty is twisted and we no longer realise what a good looking person looks like without make up and surgery. Hair colour also played part. Royalty who had period ideal hair-strawberry blond(often described as golden at those days(didn't mean blond)were considered beautiful(most of them). Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York, Juana I, Isabella I, Catherine fo Aragon, Empress Isabella, Mary I. It was combination of golden hair and grey or blue eyes, which was considered exceptionally beautiful, not just the features of the face(those were mostly just average). But there were also women with same hair, which weren't considered as beautiful, sometimes due to their religion or simply whom they married.

She was really the most beautiful woman of Europe and probably of the world, according several sources, including all the embassadors who had the previlege of seing her. She was not only very beautiful as she was inteligent, cultivated, a great royal mother and she executed the political leading paper with extraordinary capacity, which was needed once her husband was the biggest emperor of Europe, ruling so many countries, from Germany, Nederlands, part of France, Italy, Austria and king of Spain, so he had many times to solve problems in North Europe. I would like to thank the author of this video about the face of Isabella of Portugal, because its common to see sites showing portraits not of her, but from other queens named Isabella who were from Portugal, like "Isabella Of Portugal 1397-1471", who was not beauty at all. Your work is excellent! I really enjoy these videos. I'm in the middle of the 2019 Charles V bio. Two small details to mention: Charles had a more pronounced chin than you've given him here, yet painters did the same during his lifetime. Charles V's mummy shows his true chin and often it was described by ambassadors who met him. Isabella died after giving birth to her 9th child, some of whom were still-born. 9 took a greater toll on her body than did 6 births.

Isabella of Portugal is one of my favorite figures from history: a loving wife, devoted mother, and a sagacious and capable ruler. She and Charles were well matched. Charles was a magnificent failure. He attempted and failed at unifying the European Continent, but it was an admirable attempt, in the face of overwhelming obstacles. Without Isabel’s capable governance of Spain, his failure would have been more absolute. Theirs was a genuine love match. Charles never remarried.

Charles V married Isabella for pragmatic reasons : he needed someone to be Regent of Spain during his frequent absences, and a Portuguese princess would be acceptable to the Spanish, as a German or French one would not. Plus, she had a large dowery and he always needed money. But he fell in love with her. "My beloved wife," he wrote, "I kiss this sheet of paper as tenderly as I would kiss your lips if I were with you." After her death, he never remarried.

The fact that they were a queen or king is inconsequential. Queens and kings are no better nor more than anyone! So that is not the reason why she shouldn’t have been nicknamed mad. But back then people didn’t know better and did call each other mad, hence the nickname. He wasn’t the one who invented her nickname. It was given to her centuries ago, so calm down.

She kept the body unburied for political reasons until her son came back from Flandes. In fact, there's a lot of crazy things that were extremely smart political moves.

@@jamie_d0g978 Well done! Juana is a very complicated story. There are no doubts she was outside average and somewhat borderline personality. One needs to consider that her own mother was quite special for her time too. The big difference is her mother just was more at the right place / right timing and was a political mastermind /knew how to pick the best advisors. Juana still may have had quite the personality and some intellect. But she married into a powerful house and she was nowhere in a position like her mother. Her mother could and did fight her father a lot during their marriage. Juana could not do the same things regarding her husband. Then she also had to deal with incredibly strong parents which would not give her much room for her own decisions. And to top it all, pretty sure her father have had enough of dealing with strong women already when it got to her time. So, no doubt her father had very strong views as to who should be in charge. Its terribly complicated because Juana got caught in the middle of a big fight for power. She herself wanted to be a player at first. Its obvious she had to be subdued, first to her husband, later to her father. If Juana was anything like her mother, she would not take it lightly! In fact, one can see signs of the same behaviour in Catherine. Catherine gave enough evidence of being very fierce on her own rights. She was a competent regent to Henry and when Henry tried to push her aside, Catherine always fought in the background to assure her position and her daughter Mary as heir. Most of them were incredibly strong willed girls. Which, for their times, was not exactly easy. Even when you get to Isabela of Portugal, she is often remarked for snapping at Charles and trying to impose her views around. And she would not listen to anyone about her safety....dying when everyone knew she should not get pregnant again. These ladies....they were not ones to fool with :) Juana just got a very bad hand and could not get power early in life. Later it seems she more or less accepted she could not have power and just said "f* them all, just do not disturb me then". She may well have been somewhat bitter towards her own son too. Its logical given that all those guys constantly usurped her power and never wanted to give her a chance. I kind of suspect she may have enjoyed Isabela´s visits. Given that Isabela actually managed to be a regent at times, I suspect Juana enjoyed watching one of the ladies pulling strings again ;) And yes, much later in life, its possible she could have had real degenerating diseases. Her reduced social life would be a key factor and would no doubt increase her chances of mental degeneration. Even more so after her daughter was removed from her. After that, its pretty much not remarkable that she would go down mentally. As for her earlier life.....its complicated to evaluate. She may have had borderline traits. She may have been capable of some extreme actions. But a lot may have been overblown due to politics. And a lot may have been against her just because she did not get a very strong position where to fight from. There are several instances however, whenever she takes actual political decisions, she never does anything crazy. Whenever she takes real political decisions, it was always pretty reasonable. So, it becomes very tricky to evaluate her.

Isabel de Portugal was an admirable woman, indeed. She was not only extremely beautiful but also intelligent. She was able to keep running his husband's huge empire during his frequent and prolonged absences. She gave name to several cities founded in the Americas during the 16th century. I really doubt thar she was able to isolate Spain from his husband's policies. Historians agree that Spain (Castille, to be more precise) were dragged into Charles V constant wars providing men, but also economic resources through taxes. With Charles I, Castille expanded its influence worldwide like Isabel I, his grandmother, never thought, but at a very high toll. It was through Empress Isabel that his son Felipe 2nd was able to claim the Portuguese throne and unite both empires under one single ruler.

Big mistake! Isabelde Portugal was not Queen of Spain, she was never Queen of Spain because the Queen was Juana I her aunt and mother in law who died in 1555 and survived Isabel. Then, she was Empress of Germany, not Queen of Germany.

Joanna first got Kingdom of Castile after the death of her mother also named Isabella. After her father's death Joanna inherited Argon. So she was called Queen regnant of Castile and Argon. But politically her Father and after him her son Charles V ruled her Kingdom because of her alleged insanity. So Charles V was technically KING and as his consort Isabella of Portugal was Queen consort of Spain. One more thing is Charles V was called king of Germany not Emperor of Germany. So she is really Queen of Germany. Charles was Holy Roman emperor. So she is Holy Roman empress. First empress consort of Germany was Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach 😊

Yep, their infamous jaw didn't start due to inbreeding, more like lasted due to inbreeding. Already Charles V's grandfather Emperor Maxmillian was horribly ugly. My friend suspects Phillip the 'Handsome' had that nickname as jibe or indirect insult, because he wasn't handsome at all either.

The name of the poem is “Ai flores de verde pino” and the author was King Dinis I of Portugal, who lived between 1261 and 1325. It talks about a girl missing her beloved and asking for his whereabout. The music in the video is just one of a few made on the poem.
