Funny thing is... Brian May (guitar) of Queen said he didn't think too much of the Live Aid show while playing it. He recalled going up on stage, playing the short set like any other gig, and running off stage... The next day, Queen was the headline on every newspaper and everyone was talking about Freddie and Queen's set... When May looked at the footage and heard the audio, he admitted it was Freddie's show for sure that day.
@vespoint3 жыл бұрын
I figure Brian didn’t realize the impact of their performance because they played like that every time they performed. At least they did the three times I saw them. It wasn’t until they played back to back with other bands for comparison that people understood how special they were.
@sumonjamal16533 жыл бұрын
@@vespoint I think Steven Tyler of Aerosmith said it best - when they have a great show, he is in 'the zone' and the show is over before he knows it... It's the bad shows that musicians recall being painfully aware that everything is going wrong, and they desperately want to get off the stage & end the night. Tyler said in his drug days that shows were so bad he would feign passing out so that the show would be cancelled... If Brian May didn't notice much, that meant Queen had a very good night on stage. May also didn't think Queen's music would resonate with so many new fans decades after Freddie's death... I think he remarked recently that "they must have done something right" in all those years fighting in the studio while making Queen records.

Someone else has probably given you this info, but here are the basics: Freddie - Vocals, piano, guitar. Born in Zanzibar, went to boarding school in India, immigrated w/ his family to England when he was about 18. Had a degree in graphic design & designed all Queen's logos etc. Died in '91 from complications from AIDS, he was 45. Dr. Brian May - Guitar, vocals, piano. Built his guitar (Red Special) w/ his father as a teen from an old fireplace & odds and ends. Had a degree in astrophysics & after Freddie died he finished his doctorate & periodically consults w/ NASA (while still touring with Queen + Adam Lambert & working with other artists) Roger Taylor - Drums, vocals, guitar (but not on Queen material). Has a degree in biology & was in dentistry school (quit to concentrate on Queen). Has several solo albums. His son is touring w/ the current lineup of Queen + Adam Lambert (percussion). John Deacon - Bass, limited backup vocals in concert, guitar, keyboards. Has a degree in electrical engineering & designed a unique amp called "The Deaky Amp" that Brian still uses to this day. Took Freddie's death very hard & retired from the music business in 1997. Queen is the only band that every member wrote a #1 song & so were all inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They write/perform multiple genres including Rock, pop, gospel, rockabilly, folk, blues, funk/disco, opera (Freddie has an entire album of duets with an opera diva).

Freddie definitely seemed to avare of everything around him, it's incredible he was able to still perform so well but he was probably a perfectionist. Like recently I saw a video of them practicing and fireworks where about to blow up on stage. And Brian had either forgotten where or Freddie thought he went too close and saved his ass. So seems he was not just avare of where everything was supposed to be, his own part but where his band mates where too. He was a born leader (at least one stage).
@terrilabeth73663 жыл бұрын
YES! That is exactly right! Freddie was aware of everything, the ULTIMATE multitasking person when it came to music! Most people can’t keep up with themselves while singing, add an instrument, more difficult. Freddie knew what everybody was doing, including the crowd. And the cameras! Never known him to wear an ear monitor, and none of the other band members did either. They relied on the old fashioned floor monitors, which you just said! Brian and especially Roger wear them now, much, much later in life. Occasionally. Freddie wrote “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” in 5 to 10 mins on a guitar and he usually composed on a piano. Tribute to Elvis. Is that nuts or what? “We are the Champions” at Live Aid is one of my favorite versions of the song. It is the look on his face while he sings or something. And they only had 20 mins for their part of the concert so they cut down Bo Rhap and We will Rock You because of time. Freddie was sick during this performance, he had a throat infection and the doc told him not to this but Freddie was the ultimate professional, it was important, and he powered through. You don’t really notice it at all, until We are the Champions, but Roger (Drummer) stepped it up, and really belted it out allowing Freddie to stay on the lower notes. Just incredible. So many believe this is the best live performance of all time, I know I do, and he was sick! You missed a song, the encore, “Is This the World We Created” just Freddie and Brian on a 12 String guitar. It is outstanding! ❤️

Brian May told once: Freddie was very good on the guitar, very unorthodox - all downstrokes. He wrote the riff for “Ogre Battle” [from 1974’s Queen II]. I used to play it with up- and downstrokes, but he was all downstrokes. Imagine how fast his right hand was moving! He had a frenetic energy on the guitar, which came across very well in that song. He played the rhythm on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” I wanted to sound as good as Freddie did on that record, which was damn good. As a massive fan of Jimy Hendrix, Freddie taught himself to play the guitar, after some point he gave up on the idea. In live situations he only played rhythm guitar on Crazy Little Thing Called Love. However, he was capable of doing more then rhythm guitar, he wrote the song Ogre Battle on the guitar. He also recorded the original solo in Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Freddie also likely wrote Liar and Stone Cold Crazy on the guitar.

YAAAAY...I've been waiting! BTW, THERE IS A PART 3... MOST REACTORS OVERLOOK IT: Freddie & Brian May were asked to take part in the closing numbers later that night, and perform an acoustic ballad "Is This The World We Created?" LINK: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJradaJtlKyroK8 Freddie wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" as a tribute to Elvis (he wrote in 10 MINUTES while IN THE BATHTUB). During this song, lead guitarist Brian May SWITCHES GUITARS THREE TIMES. (BTW, If it makes you feel better... Freddie only knew how to play three chords on the guitar.) This was before ear monitors... One of the guys had said later that they couldn't even really hear themselves during the Live Aid set. (Maybe it was - as opposed to when they were doing their own concerts - because this set-up was done by other people/using equipment other than what Queen usually used?) At the very end of the set, you can see the box near Freddie's feet that displays lights: Each band had EXACTLY 20 minutes of performing time. The light in the box would turn yellow as a warning, then - the moment the red light came on - ALL THE POWER to their instruments would turn OFF! If you watch, you'll see that Freddie/the guys have it timed right down to the SECOND: Freddie's arm comes down to end the song at the exact SAME moment that red light comes on! (They were the only band that "took (Live Aid) seriously" and really practiced beforehand: They had practiced for a week in a room with giant clocks around them on the walls, so they would have their timing down exactly.) :D

He wrote it in 10 minutes while taking a bath. It is one of my favorite Queen songs. Brian played three different guitars during Crazy Little thing at this concert. Acoustic, Stratocaster and Brian's own Red Special. No earpiece for Freddie. The whole band said it was hard to hear themselves at this concert and there was no sound check prior to the performance...Queen is just that good. Each group was only allowed 20 minutes so some of the songs were shortened or sped up to fit into the time slot. They did a good job, got 6 and songs and the Ahh-Oh into 21 minutes. Freddie ALSO dedicated the song Crazy LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE to Elvis. But ITS ALLLL their Originals.. Isn't it amazing!!! I was shocked out my mind too👑👑👑👑🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿👑👑👑👑👑

Loved your reaction. Queen killed this performance that is called by many as the greatest live rock performance of all time. Queen literally stole the show, which was seen by 72,000 in Wembley Stadium in London and almost 2 billion worldwide,. LiveAid was a concert given to raise money for the starving children in Ethiopia and many bands performed that day in London and Philadelphia, which were all broadcast across the world. While Freddie gave a performance of a lifetime, the band members Brian May, lead guitarist and backup vocals, Roger Taylor, drummer and backup vocals (the really high notes were all Roger) and John Deacon, bass guitar, all nailed their respective parts to make for a brilliant show.

Each band only had twenty min set.. They had to fit their mega hits into that time frame. They had a traffic light set up on the side of the stage letting them know how much for time they had. Queen's roadie went out and bought clocks so during rehearsal for Live Aid so they could time it too a tee. Now that's dedication.

What we had here were three vocalists - Deacy freely admitted that his voice was bad - really bad. All four were multi instrumentalists as well as being accomplished songwriters, each one having written at least one #1 hit and all four had been inducted into the songwriters hall of fame.

I would love to see you check out the song Dreamers Ball by Queen. Freddie sings it but Brian the guitarist primarily wrote it. Its a a really beautiful tribute to Elvis shortly after he passed. Sounds like a really cool blend of their two styles and super underrated! Love the Queen reactions.

Really want to hate LOL his head board was a piano, he taught himself to play backwards if he was laying in bed. Talk about gifted. I freaking love this band. That are the best band ever❤️❤️

Nice job. The snapping was for the crowd participation. Queen wanted their audiences to be part of the show. Freddie worked hard to keep the crowd involved in their live performances. You'll notice during Brian's solo in Crazy Little Thing Called Love that Freddie goes to each side of the stage and points to people in the audience, motioning for them to stand up and clap. The audience did whatever he told them to. There is no better front man, IMHO. That, and their immense talent is why there will never be a better live band than Queen. No, they did not have earpieces back then, just the monitors. Each monitor could have a different mix depending on who it was for. I also thought Crazy Little Thing was an Elvis song when it was first released. Freddie wrote it in about 10 minutes in the bathtub as a tribute to Elvis shortly after he died. I believe it was the first number one single for Queen in the U.S. I only found out a couple of years ago that it was Freddie/Queen. Freddie also wrote We Are The Champions. Brian May (guitar) wrote We Will Rock You. Fun fact, apparently, the American record company that pressed the album in the U.S. asked if they could put We Are The Champions back to back with We Will Rock You on the album. They weren't pressed that way in other parts of the world but Queen said they could do it that way in the U.S.. The radio stations were playing the two songs back to back which made it seem like one song, so for a long time, I thought it was all one song. Because the U.S. played them that way on the radio, Queen started to do them back to back during their live shows as well. They shortened We Will Rock you and Bohemian Rhapsody in this performance because there were multiple bands playing that day so each band was only allowed 20 minutes to perform. This was a live show viewed by 1.9 Billion around the globe in addition to 72k in Wembley Stadium in London and 90k in JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. They would switch back and forth between the two venues as well as other live shots from other concerts around the world. Toward the end of the twenty minutes, the light on the stage turns yellow. If you don't finish before the time is up, the light turns red and the power goes off. You can actually see the light change from yellow to red at the front of the stage at the end of their performance. Live Aid was a world wide charity event to feed the people that were starving in Ethiopia. Queen's performance that day was voted best live rock performance ever,

Elvis and the Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Watch that again and pay attention to Brian playing guitar. At the beginning he plays acoustic with Freddie on electric. For the guitar solo, he plays a Fender Telecaster to make it sound like it belonged in a Elvis song. For the ending, he's back on his Red Special made by him and his father in the 1960s.

I was born in the 80's so i didn't know about this concert until much older. Discovered the video years ago and loved it. But the last few years I've developed a habit of watching reactors. So I've seen this video many times since. And honestly, the part where he pretty much stops singing in the middle of a song and starts talking to the audience. And says "You gave me all that i got. I thank you all." and the crowd cheered back, gets me every time.

What makes Freddie's performance even more impressive is the fact that, not only was he singing with nodules on his vocal cords, which made singing painful and the high notes difficult to hit, but he was diagnosed with laryngitis the day before the concert. His doctor recommended that he cancel, but he chose to perform and make history.

@MikeWilliams-kh6lv3 жыл бұрын
You saw it as I was typing! There are monitor wedges all the way across the front of the stage so he (and the rest of the band) can hear everything from wherever they are on stage. I appreciate that stuff too!
