The Tsar considered evacuating the children to London soon after the mood in St. Petersburg began to become unsettled, he reached an agreement with his relatives and they promised them a place but his wife opposed this idea and, as a result, sentenced the entire family to death. He wasn't particularly intelligent nor reasonable, but she was a terrible influence on him.

No one in the British royal family at the time believed the Czar would be executed. Especially the children. It came as a shock to many world leaders.

The truth is that Romanivs had plenty of opportunities to save thier children and probably aslo themselves, but they rejected them all. First of all, if the parents sent their children abroad, they would survive. Thus, many aristocrats saved their children at that time. They sent them overseas for security. Nicholas' mother asked them to flee Russia. She was very close to children, and when she lived in the capital, they visited her every week with flowers, singing songs and saying poems. When she moved to Crimea, she suggested that Nicholas and Alexandra send their children to her at the beginning of the war to improve their health and safety. However, they often used them in propaganda films and photos to support their subjects' participation in the war. After rewolution, she even got the consent of the Provisional Government to take with her grandchildren. From there, they could then sail to safety. Immediately after Nicholas' abdication, the Dowager Empress Maria managed to persuade the Bolsheviks to meet her son. She asked him what he was going to do now and told him to leave Russia as soon as possible, or at least send his children abroad. Nicholas said that as the ruler of Russia he should stay in this country until the end, and Alexandra believes that it would be much better for Russian children if they stayed here too. Maria promised that she would take her grandchildren from the Crimea to Denmark, but Alexandra wrote back to her in one of the letters: “Weaklings and cowards go to Crimea, who want to sell themselves to the Germans. I raised my children to be patriots. If necessary, they will die for their country." Maria never believed afterwards that any of the usurpers claiming to be the saved Romanov children were actually her grandchildren. She was sure that the children couldn't live in this situation. She aslo sent her other son, Michael, to persuade Nicholas and his wife to change their minds. He himself stand in Russia while sent his wife and son abroad to ensure their safety, so his mother thought he should have talk with his brother about did the same. As Michael claimed, Nicholas seemed to be convinced by his offer to save the children, but Alexandra was very skeptical. He wanted to meet alone with his brother only, but Nicholas came to the meeting together with Alexandra. Michael claimed that they quarreled a lot at that time, as Alexandra very firmly replied that Rasputin had prophesied death to her children in Russia, so that any attempts at rescue were useless. Micheal then exclaimed "You are mad. If you want to die here, then your thing. But children can't pay for your stupidity. Someone should lock you up in a convent so you can never hurt anyone again." This conversation was also confirmed by Alexandra's brother, Ernest, who after some time came to visit his sister to persuade her to go to Hesse with her children. He said Alexandra didn't want to hear about any rescue attempts. He then asked if he could see the children. She agreed, on the condition that he would not tell them anything about the absurd proposals of their relatives. Ernest said that he then entered the large common room where the children were having lessons and spent most of the day. They were all sitting at the table and seemed very sad, and Maria was crying softly and he went over to her and asked her what was wrong and she replied "Uncle Michael said mum is crazy and should be sent to a convent". Ernest later learned that someone in the service had probably passed the conversation on to the children. He also said that it was the last time he saw the children, as he left for Germany soon after. Wilhelm II tried to persuade Alexandra to go with the children to Germany. He promised to send a ship for them. Then he said that if Alexandra agreed to the evacuation of the children, he would give them German citizenship and place them under protection in Germany. Alexandra did not want the children to go to Germany, because she thought that she would then be accused of treason against Russia and espionage in favor of Germany. But that was a stupid decision in my opinion. In Germany, the aristocracy had a good life. They were placed under protection and lived peacefully until later old age. Ernest died in 1937 and Wilhelm in 1940. In addition, the royal family from Spain also sent its offer of asylum. When the family was already under arrest in the Winter Palace, Nicholas' mother made one last attempt to save the children. She contacted the interim government directly and then met with its chairman, Kerensky, begging him to save her grandchildren, promising to provide them with safety and care, and declaring that she was willing to pay a lot for it. Kerensky promised her to meet Nicholas privately and talk to him about it. When he arrived in St. Petersburg, he presented him with the Dowager Empress's proposal and asked him to consider it, suggesting that if the children were to leave the country safely, they should be evacuated as soon as possible because the political situation in the country could change dramatically after the Bolsheviks came to power. Nicholas replied, "They're not just my kids. I can't make decisions like this without consulting my wife. She believes that children should not go anywhere and she should know that I had this conversation." Kerensky respected this, but as he pointed out, Alexandra's presence nearby did not have a good effect on her children and he suggested that she be accommodated in a separate part of the palace. A few months earlier, Nicholas had also considered placing the children safely in England after consulting with relatives, but abandoned this idea when Alexandra suggested that the children would rather die heroically in their homeland than lead a shameful life in exile. Later, however, he seemed to regret this decision several times, writing in his diaries: "Fortunately, the children are still laughing and playing happily, not seeming to fully realize how tragic their situation is now" at the same time pointing to the eldest Olga's growing sadness and how she has distanced herself from her mother in recent months, not wanting to listen to her explanations. They turned down all of these offers. They believed that it would be better for the children to die an honorable death in Russia than to live shamefully in exile. The other thing was Alexandra felt a very strong attachment to religion, which may have even amounted to fanaticism. In any case, she considered Raspitin almost her god and believed all his prophecies. Once, for example, she ordered five medallions with his picture for her children and had them wear them at all times as good luck medallions. These medallions were later found next to the children's bodies in their grave. Alexandra sometimes wrote in letters to her sister that she had problems with her eldest daughter Olga, who did not want to wear the medal and believed that her mother exaggerated when talking about its meaning. Alexandra believed that this would surely bring bad luck to their family. Rasputin once prophesied to her that if he was killed by someone from the nobility, her entire family would die within two years of this event. Since Rasputin was killed by members of Nicholas's family, Alexandra concluded that she and her children were now destined to die, and that the relatives were trying to escape their destiny by proposing them to evacuate. She had to die now within two years. Nicholas was in fact heavily influenced by his wife, but he also believed that as the leader of Russia, he was surrounded by extraordinary qualities and perhaps his family was destined to be martyrs dying for their country. Of course, Alexandra's family had already suspected that she might have mental problems. During their visit to Berlin in 1910, Kaiser Wilhelm took her to see one of the most eminent psychiatrists and suggested that she stay there for a few days for observation. Alexandra was furious about this, left the clinic immediately, and then she and Nicolas quickly left Germany and announced that they would never return there in their lives.

Hey, this is all very interesting. I’ve been studying the Russian Revolution for years and knew Alexandra influenced their staying in Russia, but I’d never heard quite a few of these short stories. Just how many attempts were made to intervene. Very disheartening.

Omg, this has shocked me so much. I never knew there was so many attempts from relatives and world leaders offering for the children and Alexandra to be evacuated out of Russia. And I certainly never knew that even the tsar was given permission to leave after Dowager Empress Maria sought it from the Provisional Government. I really don’t know how to describe my feelings towards Alexandra after reading these accounts. But thank you for posting this comment!

The fear was that the British Labour Party would start a Revolution just like the Russian Bolsheviks did if the British rescued the Czar and family. Much like the Iranian Revolutionary Guards broke into the USA embassy when the Shah of Iran was given medical aid in the USA.

If these self-absorbed parents, especially Alexandra, had thought about their children for even a second, they could of course have saved them very easily. If they sent their children abroad, they would survive. Thus, many aristocrats saved their children at that time. They sent them overseas for security. Wilhelm II tried to persuade Alexandra to go with the children to Germany. He promised to send a ship for them. @@Serenity113Their mother was generally strange and not very popular. She was probably also a religious fanatic and cared more about Rasputin than her children. He said that they would die and everyone thought he was crazy and no one believed him. So she actually preferred to sacrifice the children's lives so that he would be recognized as a prophet.

@@Serenity113 Alexandra was a religious fanatic and believed in the divine right of Kings so she believed the Russian people worshipped their RF and made no effort to win the people or the aristocrats. I've read that her aunt Victoria German Empress tried advising as did her grandmother Queen Victoria and Alexandra wouldn't have it, it was her way or no way. Any advice was ignored and Nicholas was clearly heavily influenced by her hw made loads of stupid decisions because of her and it got them all killed.

I think it's sentimental because if you sympathize with the Romanovs, you must not really know much about their politics. They were incredibly xenophobic, anti-Semitic and authoritarian monarchs who did not even recognize their subjects as people equal to them. If anyone is a victim here, it is only their children, but no more than the millions of other children who died under their rule and also due to the fault of their incomplete parents who, given the multitude of opportunities they had, did not think about their safety in time.
