Queen Mary was a kook. She had six children, but she had absolutely no love for any of them, or if she did, she was completely incapable of expressing it. She allowed her husband, George V, to abuse the children, physically and mentally, and all she could say was "I must remember that my husband is also my sovereign." When visiting people, if she saw some antique or other object she liked, she would demand that it be given to her, for free, and she would not leave until the person complied. When her son, King George VI, died in 1952, her daughter, Mary, the Princess Royal, rushed into her apartments, her hair askew, to tell her the sad news. The old witch drew herself up straight and said, "Do your hair properly when you come before the Queen." She also had a pet hate for ivy. Not a leaf of it was allowed on the grounds of Marlborough House. During the war, she was staying as a guest at a home where the owner had a magnificent ivy-covered trellis. Queen Mary took it upon herself to destroy it. She died just before the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, but gave "directors" that it go on anyway and not be postponed by any mourning period for her. Mourning period? Oh, wait, that was not polite. As a practical matter, though, the coronation could not have been conveniently rescheduled on two months' notice, and it went on as planned.

You really need to read some better sources, what you have posted is utter bull shit. Read the latest "The Quest for Queen Mary". On a side note it was Lady Colville who informed Queen Mary that the King had died, so that Princess Mary story is, again, utter bull shit.

Re a delay of coronations. Look back 3 generations and Edward VII coronation was delayed due to his ill health as he required an operation. Anything is possible.

@@Edmund24 Yes and The Crown also got it wrong. In the official biography of Queen Elizabeth by William Shawcross it also refers to this. In her dairy Queen Mary wrote that she got a shock when Lady Cynthia (Colville) asked to see her after breakfast to tell her that "darling Bertie had died." I really wish people would do better research before making unfounded critical comments.

You sound as if you like her really though? Reading between the lines? I live near Sandringham - people still talk of her kindness around here during the war but who's right? lol
