Years ago A friend and I stayed for a night on the Queen. It was a very rainy and stormy night we went to the observation lounge. The big band music was playing and we couldn't see the city of Long Beach out of the windows. All we saw was the rain. It felt just like we had stepped back in time to the late 1930's. What a wonderful time we had.

When I was 14, my mother and I took a tour of the queen Mary at Long Beach. That was 50 years ago. They had a room welded on the outside of the ship over one of the props. We walked out of the ship. The room was dark, and the light shone clearly on the prop under crystal clear water. It's is a sight I will never forget.

My maternal Grandfather came home from his Army service in WWII on the Queen Mary in 1946. During mail call one day while on board, he heard the name of a childhood friend being called and he reunited with him, neither having known that they were both based in England during the war. His friend had recently married a local woman who worked for the U. S. government during the war, and his English war bride soon came over to join him in America. She was the only native Briton I knew when I was growing up. They’re sadly all gone now, but I’ve talked with amateur radio operators in the Queen Mary’s radio room and I look forward to taking my family to Long Beach to visit the Queen Mary in person.

Fascinating optical effect on the Funnels. You look at Queen Mary at a glance, and all 3 of them appear to be the same height. Great video, Mike 👍.
@SmilingLlama-qt4kq4 күн бұрын
When Mike mentioned those lights shining on the funnels, I thought of the "Europa" and the "Normandie", whose names were emblazoned in lights between the funnels. Now that's making sure people knew who she was! When talking about the big vents on the deck, in my opinion, the "Mauritania" had the most cluttered look as far as vents. Otherwise, she was a beautiful ship!

Excellent video Mike! My family immigrated to the U.S. in 1962 aboard the Queen Mary and later I was a tour guide and concierge aboard in Long Beach. Actually later still was an officer aboard all 3 of the U.S. fleet in Hawaii (NCL America). Anyway… pretty sure at least part of the Long Gallery is now the Starbucks coffee shop just off the ‘enclosed’ promenade. And yes! Enclosed promenades are awesome romantic nostalgic and sorely missing in today’s ships.

A few days ago, I actually had that exact discussion regarding clipper sterns, cruiser sterns, and transom sterns with my cousin, a naval architect in New Orleans, LA. *According to him, the transom is the least hydrodynamically efficient stern shape,* but it is most common now because it is cheaper, easier to build, and it provides necessary room for propulsor pods and steering gear. Like you've said before, ship design is always about trade-offs and compromises, and the added benefit from propulsor pods can help to offset the inefficiencies of the transom stern. There are some ship owners who are sensitive to total operational costs, and will invest the money up front for more hydrodynamic efficiency, but others won't.

I’m old enough to remember a documentary about 50 years ago, probably on the BBC, about the building of the Queen Mary, using archive footage, along with a present day recording of a Southampton to New York crossing. The Captain was what you would imagine a Captain of that time to be like, robust, brash, and self confident. He was asked if the Queen Mary would be going for the Blue Riband, his reply was as blunt as you would expect, “of course that’s what we’re out for, what did we build her for”. Over the years I’ve tried to find this documentary online, unfortunately without success.

Back in the mid 70's I was on The Mary with my parents and their friends. My Dads friend had ridden on her in WW2 when she was a troop ship. They just let you wander around when we were there, so my dads friend took us to a to a state room. He explained that while on the ship in WW2 he had gotten lost so he knocked on this door. A man answered, his jaw dropped, but he managed to ask directions on how to get back to the upper deck. The man was very nice and directed him to the nearest stairs. That man was .......... Winston Churchill!!! Oh, and later, we were standing on the top deck near the front of the ship when they unexpectedly sounded the horn, scared the crap out of me so I dropped and broke my 110 camera. LOL

We've crossed the Atlantic twice so far on the QM2 and plan to go out and back on her again this year. On our second crossing, I had the honor of attending a lecture on her by Dr. Stephen Payne. In it, he mentioned an interesting feature of the ship. Deck 7 is made up of only 2 things: exterior promenade and interior lounges (some of that being the spa and King's Court buffet). Payne said that was so passengers waiting to board lifeboats in an emergency would not have to stand out in the cold and rain, but sit in a comfortable lounge.

Mike, you need to take another trip out here to CA and visit the Queen Mary again. I watched a video recently that said that there's been a lot of restoration happening on the Queen Mary as of late last year. Some of her decks have been restored with new teak and they've replaced some of her railings as well. I think that they've done a bit of work on the insides as well and "updating" some the cabins to have more of an art deco look more in line with how they would have appeared back when she was first built. While you're there, you can also visit the USS Iowa and maybe do a brief video tour of her. She's not exactly next door to the Queen Mary but she's not that far from her either.

Great video! The Queen Mary is an amazing ship, and the level of detail in her design is just incredible. I would point out one small correction though....on the promenade deck, going from the enclosed prom into the interior spaces of the deck like the main hall, the floor does not drop...rather the inboard ceiling (or the floor of the Sun deck) goes up by 4 ft. The stairs you point out along the sides of the main hall go up to the Sun/Boat deck, not the enclosed promenade. It's a similar arrangement to Titanics first class lounge (and many other liners), where the deck above was raised in in order to give more hight inboard.
