Freddie's words paints a picture of a fantastical world full of beauty ruled by a benevolent king. In less than 4 minutes reality takes over, the kingdom is ruined and the king is ousted. Lyrical masterpiece.

In this song "someone has drained the color from my wings". In The Show Must Go On, get this. "my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies". "Fairie tales (Rhye) of yesterday will grow but never die." People just keep discovering.

My Fairy King is one of their first songs and The Show Must Go On is one of their last songs (with Freddie)

You usually see the bass going in a fixed place around the piano (that is sometimes unusual) in Freddie songs. That's also a highlight in many Queen songs, the relation between bass and piano. There's a well known video in youtube explaining a lot about John's style and you usually have some daring moves in his own songs and in Freddie's.

I love this song and you can hear the basis of some songs that will come in the future from Freddie.

I love this song! Especially Rogers high falsetto. As Sherry said, it does have some parts for songs to come that Queen recorded. Thank you for the reactions and have a great day!

You can hear the DNA of what Queen would become in certain passages of this song for sure.

Ya pretty cool ya pretty cool. That bass note sounds weird because the vocal harmonies are a cord thats puts the bass note out of place. Forgot what its called. Your the first person I've efer seen notice that. Knew you would like this album. Drama album by Yes. Pls. 🙏🍁

I think its called harmonic dissonance or just dissonance?

This is one of my 2 favorite songs on Queen 1. The other one is Liar, which is arguably the best song on the album. Side 2 isn't as strong as side 1. Queen 2 has a similar sound, but it's waaaaay better. Several of my all time favorite Queen songs are from the second album, especially the 2nd side. Side1 is the white side with Brian May writing most of the songs and side 2 is the black side with Freddie Mercury writing all of it. The black side is such a unique musical experience, even for Queen. There's nothing else quite like it. There are several tracks that flow into the next track. Ogre Battle, The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke and Nevermore need to be heard as one.

Great piece of music with one of his most meaningful lines: "Mother Mercury, look what they've done to me." When I went onto my KZbin page a few minutes ago, I saw this video and right next to it was a recipe/tutorial for steak pizzaiola. What are the odds? 😄

Producer John Anthony was a house producer for the Charisma label and was responsible for early albums by Van der Graaf Generator and Genesis. I can hear some sonic similarities, mainly the use of heavy reverb on the vocals while the instruments are relatively dry. But I'd say this album has more innovation happening compared to those other bands, probably because of relative levels of experience and maturity in the studio. But you can totally hear how songs like this were the prototype for the mini operettas like "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Freddie wrote one 'kitchen sink- thne on each of the earlier albums. They are among the stranger songs but...Bohemian Rhapsody was one of them.

Phenomenal song from a near perfect album. What I thought was great but seemingly impossible was they outdid themselves with Queen II. As a bassist myself that's the problem you hit a bad note or your bass is slightly out of tune you & everyone hears it lol. I read a article about Paul Mccartney guitarist & sometime bassist Brian Ray saying he hit a bad note in Long & Winding Road live he was mortified lol said it sounded like a house falling apart..Paul just have him a side glance lol...hazards of being a bassist.

Bad bass note huh? I'll have to listen to that better on my record which will play through much better speakers than I'm currently on. What's the matter with you? Great King Rat is the best song on the album! Joke. They guy below likes something else and everybody has their favs, that's just one of mine.
