Queen’s Lecture 2020 - Dr Emily Shuckburgh: A blueprint for a green future

Dr. Emily Shuckburgh, Director of Cambridge Zero, the University of Cambridge’s climate change initiative, and Reader in Environmental Data Science at the Department of Computer Science and Technology held the Queen's Lecture "A blue print for a green future". It was the first digital event in 55 years.

Today we sit at a pivotal moment in history. The toll that COVID-19 has wreaked on humanity is immense. But as we look to how the world can emerge from the pandemic stronger and more resilient, we must face head-on the triple challenge of responding to the threats posed by growing social inequality, the destruction of nature and climate change. She argued that this is the moment to reset our priorities, to re-evaluate our relationships with each other and with the world that sustains us, and to imagine and then realise a future that is, simply, better.

I feel very sad that my question about Nuclear Energy that I asked via Twitter, which was relayed by the chair during the debate (to be seen now on KZbin at 2:00:16 or via kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4WomamPp5Vjl6s ), was simply dodged by Dr Emily Shuckburgh. I find this very sad, as at the moment, the shutting down of plants in Europe is partly responsible for the slow response in GHG emissions. In Germany for example, they would have been able to reduce their GHG emissions much faster had they decided not to close down so many Nuclear Power plants (certainly the most recent ones) through their Atomausstieg. I find it a bit weird also that in very respected scientific debates, it was referred to as "dated technology", and simply ignored in the presentation (had no one asked the question).

I have to admit calling it a dated technology seems rather bizarre, especially considering it is still researched and developed.

interviewer: Which technologies have potential, maybe nuclear energy? Dr. Shuckburgh *nods*, "so Solar and wind can improve in efficiency, maybe CCS". Okay CCS is not to controversial to touch on, but Nuclear is?

You are not being very objective of you ignore the huge contribution of nuclear energy. Also. Please study the EROI, energy return on energy invested. Renewables + battery storage could come very close to a net energy sink. Scientist should remain objective and open minded.
