"Innuendo" began as a jam session in Switzerland amongst Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon in spring 1989. Freddie Mercury was upstairs and heard them playing the beat, and turned it into a song, creating the melody and starting off the lyrics. From then on all four worked on polishing the track and Taylor took over the lyrics (which were written as a tribute to Led Zeppelin and their song "Kashmir"). The middle section, written by Mercury, was included later and it featured a synth-orchestra programmed by producer David Richards and a flamenco interlude played by Yes guitarist Steve Howe, who had come to visit them and was asked to play. “Innuendo" was released as a single in January 1991, debuting at No. 1 in the UK. Four different animation styles were used for each member. They wanted to get it out before Christmas, but couldn’t. Freddie was very ill when they recorded this album. We lost him in November 1991. Wonderful reaction to 2 very different songs. Queen could do anything. They need their own genre!

When I think of innuendo, I’m reminded of this comment from peter freestone. “When it came down to it, Freddie knew that he could create what he wanted on his own, but his life, his music, revolved around Queen.” They all stated this sentiment at one time or another. Roger & John in particular used to say, “the band is everything, you have to stick together” It was always the 4 of them against the world.

I read that music was started off by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon in a jamming session the studio in Montreux. From then on Freddie Mercury composed the song and added the long interlude. The melody is Mercury's as well. Lyrics were started off by Mercury but completed by drummer Roger Taylor. I Love how different and Unique Queen is that is what makes them so Fabulous in my opinion. Another powerful and top notch song from Queen

Seaside Rendezvous was almost vaudevillian like some of their others songs, Bring Back Leroy Brown and Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon. I'm sure these guys all spent some time at a famous British seaside resort like Brighton or Blackpool and that left cherished, fun childhood memories. Seaside trips are part of growing up in the UK. (Love the Scottie dog at 4:24. I've had Scotties for 50 years.) Innuendo is a heavy moment. Freddie was dying. He sees so much suffering and human stupidity in the world and yet he wants humanity to "keep on trying". Like "The Miracle" he wrote with John, he always had hope. At this point he was too ill to do much in the way of videos. This was recorded in 1991, the year he died. The first part is clay animation and stop action. Pretty cool. Each member appears as a sort of Gothic portrait of themselves starting @ 11:12, Freddie with his cats, then Roger, then Brian, then John in his famous jester's cap. In the rest of the video they are individually portrayed in the style of different artists. Freddie is like a pastel drawing from a comic book. Brian is done in a xylographic style like a woodcutting. John is done in a cubist abstract Picasso style. Roger in a filtered expressionist style. I know Freddie studied and loved art but maybe each picked according to their own taste. These two songs are so totally different. That's what I loved about Queen. They did rock, metal, vaudeville, blues, jazz, pop, folk, operatic....everything... and did it well. They were four unique individuals (Freddie called them four misfits) with personalities that were vastly different from each other. All very well educated, Freddie art and design, Brain PhD astrophysics, John honors electrical engineering degree, Roger biology and each had different musical preferences that contributed to the variety of their music. All were superb musicians and multi-instrumentalists. Their differences were their strengths and a gift to us. Innuendo is the Bohemian Rhapsody of the 90's. Who knows what might have been if they had continued.

Amazing information. Once again, thank you so much. Innuendo was truly art. Not much more to say about it, but art. I truly believe Queen would still be at the top of the charts today with Freddie, because they could truly do anything, and changed with the times.

This was Freddie’s last song he recorded. He died shortly after. You were right about this song felt like BR. He wrote this and the message is powerful. I think I like this better because like you said it had meaning behind it that you can’t denial. Great reaction. I was 16 when I first heard BR. It has been a joy for me to watch young music influencers reacting to the music I grew up on. The 70’s and 80’s music that was ever created in the history of the world. I’m so blessed that I was born into this era...JD

About Innuendo What a masterpiece!!! The music is awesome and the video is amazing!!! Like someone said “dying man sound better than all the healthy people singing today” The video is a master piece too..., and the lyrics just so in context right now... , its seem to be writte just for us in 2020..., despite it was written by Freddie almost 30 años ago!!! How courageous man...!!! OMG.., how much strength and will to carry on with his illness and working in his music... day by day ... every day a little less.. every day was more and more hardest... until he was not capable to finish....!!! It’s so sad..., but he left us the gift of his music and the example of his strength. 💔💔💔💔 We all Loves you Freddie

Funny pair of completely opposite songs... I love them both. For the Innuendo video they didn't use any current pictures or film material of Freddie, because he was so sick and thin at that point. But still he was so much into the music, and his voice was still so strong. Making music held him upright.

They had total fun making seaside rendezvous experimenting with the instruments and the microphone. For instance, the tap dancing was Roger tapping his fingers with thimbles on. I definitely agree with you about answered/unanswered prayers. One of my favorite songs is by Garth Brooks "Sometimes I thank God for Unanswered Prayers". Sometimes what we pray for isn't really what we need! Innuendo is credited to Queen as a group, but it is generally considered to be Brian's Bohemian Rhapsody.

Seaside Rendezvous is vaudeville or music hall, it comes from the 1920's. British rock artist sometimes had a tradition of doing these song, the Beatles also had a few vaudeville numbers. Something that is amazing in this song, is all of the different tones and expressions within Freddie's voice. As singer that is perhaps something that you might find interesting, Freddie had a lot of different colors and textures that he could add to his voice. This song is very popular with choirs and acapella vocal groups. Innuendo is another masterpiece and the song went straight to no.1 on the charts when it was released. It was about seven months before Freddie's death. The Show Must Go On from the same album reached no.1 in the charts a month before Freddie's death. That is perhaps part of the enigma, although he was 45 when he died, Queen were still going very strong, they were still producing hits. That also leaves you with a feeling of might have been.

Very cool videos! Seaside Rendezvous definitely puts a smile on my face, very light and bouncy. Lazing on a Sunday afternoon and good company (sung by Brian playing a banjulele) have that same cheery, bouncy vaudeville vibe and same effect. I also liked his reference to Rudolf Valentino, the latin lover of the silent screen. Innuendo is superbly deep and encouraging as well! One of my favorite songs! The music video is very creative and beautiful. I love how each member of the band was illustrated in homage to a different artist or artistic style: Freddie in homage to Da Vinci, Brian after victorian etchings, John in homage to Picasso and Roger after Jason Pollock. I agree, you name the type of music, they will have done it!
