Sleeping On The Sidewalk - by Brian May John Deacon: Bass Brian May: Lead and backing vocals, and electric guitar Freddie Mercury: 👀 Roger Taylor: Drums

Brian said often that he considered the guitar to be his voice. Most of his solos were just a continuation of the vocal line of the song. None of the singers in Queen were vocally trained, not even Freddie. Brian said that the first time Freddie heard himself on tape , he said "I'm not having that!" and went off and practiced and somehow willed himself to become the great singer we know.

My theory is that Brian was "holding back" somewhat on this track, vocally speaking, because he was playing the role of a trumpet player, not a singer. One of my favorite vocals by Brian is on the song, "Leaving Home Ain't Easy", which is on the Jazz album.

Love it! Brian caught the blues. Good beat and fun. My favorite song on the album is Melancholy blues which is at the end. Freddie wasn't trained he just really worked on it, Roger said he sounded like a sheep at first because of his vibrato, but they said in a blink of an eye Freddie harnessed it. Great reaction

Brian said, “That was the quickest song I EVER wrote in my life. I just wrote it down. It’s funny because it’s one of the ones I’m quite pleased with as well. It’s not trying too hard, it’s not highly subtle, but I think it leaves with a good feeling”.

Brian is a strange case of a guy that became a better singer when old. He is at his highest spot in the 90s when he released two albums. His voice got strong and "proper" to a heavy rock song. Also he started to dare a lot, reaching his highest notes while in his solo career. You could really feel the passion in his voice in his concerts.

YES.. he was an amazing singer.. (in fact, either he or Roger could have vocally fronted a band...lol) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYukiml3npWCsNk

Never heard this before, it's OK. I heard stuff like this at the what was called "Barnful of Blues" (That was really outside at a 4-H camp or in the barn if raining) day they had once a year in August in New Hampshire that had many local and sometimes national Blues/ Rock bands, and some great stuff almost every time.

OK song and fun to dance to … I agree with your reaction 😊

Deacon wrote "another one bites the dust,"you're my best friend" and" I want to break free." Taylor wrote "radio Gaga,a kind of magic " All big hits.Imagine the money lost if it was only Mercury and May writing.Just saying.

Fair reaction, and I hear ya, I'm not trained either, yet I got into Ennio Morricone's choir for his last concert in Dublin. I couldn't read the sheet music either, I recorded the rehearsals and learned by ear.

I agree about the analysis of Brian. His Song writing ability and the other band members also develop incredibly well in time, They were perfect by the time of the Innuendo album. This song gives a little window into how they would craft their music by who came up the song...

Fair comments - I like the track, but it would have been much better to have Freddie singing it.

While I agree that Freddie had an incredible voice, I think Brian knew which songs suited his own voice the best. I think every song he sang up to and including this point worked best with his singing. More subdued, but also very pretty. All Dead All Dead, 39 and Some Day One Day as perfect examples. This being a more subdued song suits it perfectly. When you get to Who Wants To Live Forever you'll see very clearly how the contrast with his and Freddies voice is a great dynamic.

People are just used to hearing Brian May's voice on these songs after years of listening. On some of Brian's songs I agree that his voice suited some songs, like 39, She Makes Me or All , All Dead, for example. But for Sleeping On The Side walk there is no reason why Freddie could not have sung it. As for Who Wants To Love Forever, there was no reason for Brian May to insert himself into that song. The song has a classical style and is much better served with Freddie's vocals. There is a version of Freddie singing it alone and it is much better, but again people have been listening to the other version for years.
@TheBlackcredo8 ай бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic how do you insert yourself into your own song? Brian wrote it and had the right to do what he liked with it. I've heard both versions and prefer the one with Brian singing the first verse because he sang it beautifully,. Just like he wrote Sleeping On The Sidewalk and therefore had the right to sing it if he wanted to. Queen wasn''t the Freddie Mercury show. They were a band of four equals who all had a say in how the songs went.

The blues backlash. Politics. Only a specific color can profit from not just money. Too risky to venture.

If you are looking for more May blues, there is a nice one on a solo album of his, together with Eddie Van Halen, Fred Mandel, Phil Chen and Alan Gratzer, named blues breaker. It is a jam session like song you can find on his mini album Starfleet Project. From this album : Starfleet kzbin.info/www/bejne/a52mZmeOaqyWZ7M . Story says May wrote this because his son was fan of the puppet science fiction series, Star Fleet, the secret of x zero one, if i am not mistaken. In fact this entire 3 song album is a jam session.

I really don't get a blues sound here. Just rock & roll. If you want blues, give a listen to "Blue Jean Blues" by ZZ Top (if you haven't heard it before) or "Ride On" by AC⚡DC.

Catchy little thing - Brian's singing is lighter and softer here in Queen. Freddie wasn't trained vocally either, but yeah he really practised. Roger and Brian both have said Freddie sounded like a sheep when he first joined them. But, wow, did he harness his voice into a fantastic instrument. Back to Brian, he will get stronger

It's OK. Fun and maybe an homage to all the blues artists who influenced him.

Hey Justin... thanks for all the Queen reactions, really appreciate them... BUT... I can't help but take offense at the remarks made about Brian's singing... Yes, you have the right to your opinion, but don't you think you should listen to more than a couple of old songs before being so harsh?? Try listening to his solo album "Another World" or even a few others like "Dream of Thee" or "Holy Man" or "You Know You Belong To Me"... maybe change your mind a little... blessings.

Brian and Roger's voices are just okay as far as I am concerned but I LOVE Freddie's voice and wish he had sung all of the Queen songs--his vocals are intrinsic to the iconic Queen sound.
@neilloughran44378 ай бұрын
Ain't nothing wrong with the blues as a whole but can get a bit tiring (especially coming from a keyboardist who had to do this week in and week out)... pretty good arrangement... great feel... and I love the guitar sound especially. Not a classic but in the context of this album stuffed with "hits" it's another flavour.
@delorangeade8 ай бұрын
It's just a blues jam, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not something to keep coming back for. Brian doesn't have the most dynamic voice, but he wrote it so he can sing it as far as I am concerned. We know he means it and we know he feels it, even if the tools he has to convey it are not the best. I think trained singers singing rock, and particularly when it comes to music like the blues, can sound mannered and artificial to me, and it just doesn't work. There's no point hitting all the notes if you can't tell a story.

You say: "Queen loved to experiment". I say: "This album is a mess - all over the place". Why is this track on the same album as "We Are The Champions"?
