What's so weird about removing crusts from sandwiches?millions of people do it from small children just getting teeth to older folks having problems with theirs and everyone in between.As for the shoes,Angela Kelly,the Queen's dresser and trusted confidante,was the same shoe size.The Queen was on her feet all day and,at 96,deserved a bit of comfort,so Angela would wear in the new shoes for a couple of days.New shoes can cause blisters to anyone and it was a simple task to perform.

Much of the criticism of Marie Antoinette goes back to when she as very young. The most excesses are from when she was a teenager. It was a huge shock culturally on every level to be at the French court. So many things weren't done in Austria that was the norm at Versailles. The little farm, the Petite Trianon was her way of escaping Versailles and coping with the extreme anxiety from her life. It allowed her to develop a deeper bond with her children than what was allowed at Versailles. Most of suffocating court etiquette was dropped at her refuge. Also the time away from Versailles was the only way to bring some normalcy and keep her children from growing haughty as the women of the French royal family. Think about it.. what was available to her?

Queen Victoria's father died when she was a toddler, her husband died in his early 40's and a few of her children and grandchildren died young. I would imagine she would be frightened of her own early death due to everyone dying around her, so she had a death obsession and most likely severe depression.. However, back in the Victorian days life spans were a lot shorter due to wars and due to communicable diseases, which were rampant. There were no lab tests to diagnose, no immunizations and few medications to treat these diseases! I am glad that I was born in the 20th century. By the way, do not imply that Queen Elizabeth Ii was weird. She was a traditional woman made of pure goodness and was a wonderfully honest Christian woman, who put duty to her country first..

Mary of Teck (1867-1953), wife of George V who'd live to see her fave granddaughter become Elizabeth II, not only was a klepper but she had a complete phobia about ivy! It wasn't enough for her to rid as many royal buildings, gardens,etc. of it, if she went to a subject's abode and saw it growing, she order the subject to have it pulled down by royal command- regardless of whether the homeowner may have liked having ivy grow! BTW, although she was born to a German [barely]royal dynasty, she'd been born in Kensington Palace- right in very same bed as her future grandmother-in-law Victoria had been born 48 years and two days earlier (and it was no accident on the part of Mary's mother who herself was a cash-poor 1st cousin of Vic).

About Queen Victoria's 'widow's weeds' -- in the 19th century, it was normal for a woman to wear black for the rest of her life after her husband died. At least, according to Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind. There was actually a whole etiquette surrounding death and dress wear, with differing mourning periods for parents, siblings, etc. For men, they only had to wear a black armband.
