Queensland's 2032 Olympics and Paralympics prep has received major backlash after Premier Steven Miles rejected recommendations to build a brand new $3.4 billion stadium, opting instead to revamp the existing Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre.

Athens was a total disaster. Its not the standard olympics. Care is needed. Cost saving measures are needed. But come on. London, Sydney, Tokyo, Beijing all had successful games and successfully converted their infrastructure into ongoing usage.

Build a new stadium at Victoria Park, use the Gabba, QSAC, and Suncorp as is. Redevelop the Gabba and QSAC after the Olympics to recover costs. The Gabba needs a significant renovation anyway....

What’s the purpose of hosting the damn games anyway. Flashy stadium or not, Brisbane is a dying city and that’s become pretty evident since the pandemic with whole CBD food courts as ghost towns. It’s no wonder Myer left and we have a rising youth crime problem. Keep going this way and we will end up like San Francisco or New York. High amounts of homelessness and crime and vacant store fronts in the ruins of what was once a thriving city. Our transport system is another joke and Brisbane already has the worst capital city public transport in the country. We will probably have a very car centric legacy from the games.

Brisbane needs a new Oval Stadium regardless of whether they stage the Olympics or not, 2 reviews have said the Gabba is past its use by date, the structural skeleton of the Stadium is compromised and does not meet modern building regulations. The Lions sell out multiple games a season along with Cricket looking like losing Test Matches if there is not a new Oval Stadium. The IOC are putting circa 2 Billion dollars towards the Olympic build, that money is not there if there is no Olympics, Brisbane needs to take advantage of this once in a century opportunity.

Tbh, over 8 years if the government spends 8-10 billion dollar with support from federal government its not much. It is going to be 0.5-1% of Queensland's budget over 8 years. With that you get a tier 1 stadium and show that Brisbane is a world class city. I don't know what people are crying about. Gabba has to be replaced. It would be a huge loss to the economy if Brisbane can't provide a great hosting venue.
