Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime IMO is one of the best concept albums of all-time and should be listened to from beginning to end to realize how great all the songs actually are. This album is a "rock opera" and the live performance is meant to be very dramatic. This video is part of the "Operation: Livecrime Concert" and was released as a full video. I was able to see this concert live and as cheesy as it may seem to you, it was an amazing concert to experience live. Queensryche is one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. I think maybe you need to dive a little deeper into Queensryche to appreciate them. I've seen both of Dream Theatre and Queensryche live and Queensryche was by far the better band in concert. Try checking out "Queensryche Live in Toyko 1984" to really get an idea of how tight the band was live and how incredible Geoff Tate's vocals are.

Geoff Tate (singer here), Ann Wilson of Heart, late Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, RIP, and late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, RIP, lived in Metro Seattle. They know each other. They were students of the late David Kyle, RIP. This is 1 of the popular songs from Queensryche. The requester should have requested any of these songs: Take Hold of the Flame, Queen of the Reich, I Don't Believe in Love, Eyes of a Stranger, Jet City Woman or Is Anybody Listening? Any of these songs demonstrate the range of Geoff Tate.

This is an opera.... So this is out of context by itself. They also precede Dream Theater, and they are not about technical proficiency ( outside of the singer Geoff Tate....who far exceeds anyone in the 80s)

I was fortunate enough to see them perform the entire Mindcrime album twice. They sounded great live. Tate’s voice is excellent, and the band is tight. Great live performers in their day.

I'm surprised you've never heard this album....it's a colossal LP. But to hear Geoff Tate at his best live you really do need to hear " Take hold of the flame" Live in Tokyo 1984......truly amazing.

Yes, drama. Without context it’s hard to wrap your head around some of what’s happening because it’s meant to be part of a bigger picture. The musicianship on this album is insane and it’s the only rock opera I like. “Like” being a massive understatement. I’m not sure I’d have chosen this particular track for you to start with. I actually kind of feel like we should put together a paid reaction for the whole album. I would certainly be interested in contributing to a pooled fund with the end goal of you reacting to Operation Mindcrime. Anyone else?

The keyboards are sampled. They were one of the earliest bands I believe to use them. This whole video of this concert is one of the best. Queensryche was one of the best sounding bands back in the day. I opened for them on their American Soldier tour in Lockport New York. I think it was one of their last tours with Geoff Tate. As a fellow bass player their bassist Eddie Jackson has one of the best recorded & live bass tones.

I’m shocked that you never heard this album. It’s got to be in the top 10 concept albums of all time. It’s actually the first CD I ever bought. Got this album along with a new CD player to go with my record and tape player. Lol. This album really needs to be listened to in its entirety. Like listening to The Wall or a Dark Side of the Moon. I’ll say this is an odd choice to pick to introduce you to them however I love this song so I’m glad whoever recommended it did. But there are more straightforward songs that got radio play. This is probably the most “theater like” performance from the entire show. I found them thanks to WBCN metal night show on sundays when they played The Needle Lies and I was like who is this?!!! Their next album is what really put them on the map though. The song Silent Lucidity had people saying they were the next Pink Floyd which I used to laugh at. They are not like Floyd. And they are not like DT. I never actually heard that connection until you read it.

The requester should have warned you that this song and live performance are part of a concept album that was performed very theatrically. That said, I’ve always loved that album and the live theatrical performance. Some theatrical cheese, but well conceived and executed.

Queensryche (original lineup. The EP and first five albums were their best IMO) is a musically and lyrically superior band. Plus they are the best live band I've ever seen! Their music is not limited to one narrow sound. There are so many good and diverse songs to chose from, it's hard to decide on which ones to recommend. But I hope you try a few more. I don't think you'll be disappointed. "Suite Sister Mary" is not the song I would have chosen to introduce you to Queensryche with. This song is in the middle of the "Operation:Mindcrime" concept album which is one long story, so hearing this one without any other context makes it difficult to fully appreciate what's really going on. Hearing "Operation:Mindcrime" in it's entirety is really essential listening. A masterpiece! AND, while written in 1988, is still relevant today. Singer Geoff Tate does tend a bit towards the theatrical in this song, but it's kind of the nature of the storytelling for this album. But for the most part, the band is not over-the-top in that respect. As you said, this is ONE song. Can't make a general assessment based on that. Other songs I would recommend to get you started are: 1. "Take Hold of the Flame" LIVE in Tokyo 1984 for early QR. Stellar vocals and musicianship! 2. "The Killing Words" MTV Unplugged 1992. Stripped down acoustic version. 3. "Eyes of a Stranger" the last song from O:MC, but still a good stand alone lyrically. 4. "Jet City Woman" 5. "Silent Lucidity". A ballad about lucid dreaming. Hope you try a few more to really get a sense of the scope QR were capable of.

Listening to a single track from a concept album is never ideal, as to some degree at least, you're listening to something that's been taken out of context. You'd be better off listening to the whole thing, that said, you give the impression that concept albums aren't your musical delectation. Rest assured Operation Mindcrime is a masterpiece and Operation Livecrime, part of which you've seen here, is truly epic. As regards Queensryche and DT being mentioned in the same genre, I think that that's fair enough but it's true that they don't sound alike. Some early Queensryche is actually nearer to an Iron Maiden sound but they went on to develop their own very distinct sound. DT are higher spec players than Queensryche but as regards the singers, although James LaBrie is great, Geoff Tate is (probably was now) better. On the off chance that you're ever tempted to dive in to Queensryche, you can stop at Promised Land (1994) as they sadly fall off of a cliff after that.

Thanks for doing this ! The drama was because this is a concept album and the show does the LP beginning to end with lots of theater. You need to watch more Queensryche IMHO. I wanted to put something out there that hasn't been reacted to a thousand times already. Obviously there's lots of samples on that show. First album until Geoff left they're all worth hearing. Fates Warning is Dream Theaters main influence per the band. There's two eras two different singers. Awaken the Guardian is my fave then maybe Parallels.

Welcome to the exciting world of music that is Queensryche! This song is from Operation Mindcrime and is the height of the album. I highly, highly recommend their concept album, Operation Mindcrime. It is one of the best albums of all time and imo, the best concept/visual album of all time. There's also the live performance recording, Operation Livecrime that I can't not recommend. There were mixed reactions to this album, Operation Mindcrime, as they moved away from their previous rock albums to make this concept album and many fans hated it.
