When her character told Michael that she wished he wasn’t gay after he told her he was dating someone HIV+ was not amazing, in fact it added to the stigma we’re still fighting today.
@BooBooKittyFuzzyBritches

@@msbuch72 🤔 Hmm... Humans are flawed & messy. They don't always do or say the right thing when faced with difficult situations. The show was never intended to portray a Gay Utopia of perfect role model characters. Not to mention, it was also filmed 20 years ago. Thankfully, a lot has changed in the world since then. Debbie was Michael's biggest cheerleader & wanted him to have the best life possible. She was also watching her brother Vic die from HIV/AIDS & was his primary caregiver. She knew first hand how devastating it was to watch someone you love get sicker & sicker. She didn't want to see her son go through that crushing heartbreak. Parents make mistakes. They're human. Babies don't come with lifetime instruction manuals on how to handle every situation perfectly. She panicked & lashed out in a moment of intense vulnerability. People do that sometimes. Most of us do our best to learn & grow & do better as we get older. Of course, Michael was in love with Ben & wanted to spend his life with him, no matter how many years that meant. Debbie dealt with her fears, fell in love with Ben too & mothered him just like she did Michael & his friends. The conflict in the story provided a much bigger opportunity for audiences to learn from it. Michael & Ben's relationship showed viewers that they could be together & still keep Michael safe. I'm not sure what more you could've wanted from the show?

@@msbuch72 I’m watching that very episode before I watched this and wrote this comment to you. Deb comes around to love and accept Ben soon. We have to have conflict in a tv show anyway. So that’s why she disagreed. The show would be boring if there was no rough patches.

Oh, ""Queer as Folk" wasn't available in my house when I was high school. But i did sporadically get to watch "Dawson's Creek" (old school Berlanti) and Popular (by a pre-Nip/Tuck Ryan Murphy). It's amazing seeing how the two have just flourished since then. With the exception of the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie. But I just have to say how happy for, and proud if Carl Nassib I am. The year after I graduated from university, Carl's older brother Ryan started at my college, and Ryan Nassib was integral in turning around Syracuse football. It turned out that the Nassubs were these huge D1 level athletes, and Carl (a junior in Penn State's pre-med program) went from "walk-on" to one of the top defensive players in a famously difficult conference. When (fresh out of college), became a standout player for the Cleveland Browns, I didn't think I could be prouder of him. And, he then becomes the first out gay active player in the NFL's 100 and something seasons! Amazing.

Another great show as usual. Huge fan of QAF. Watched every episode every Sunday night. Just curious though why Gale and Thea's absences weren't addressed? I so appreciate the rest of the main cast being there but something was missing since Gale wasn't there with Randy and Thea wasn't there with Michelle. So much more could have been talked about. My favorite story was Emmett and Drew's love story. And so bummed they weren't still together when the series ended. And my favorite all time scene was Justin jacking of the high school football star. That's every gay boy's fantasy right? 😊😊. Again great show. Happy Pride. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

Its funny how two countries speaking the same language , have at times such a different outlook. The UK QAF was very graphic and was shown on terrestrial tv, no pay per view. So it was open for all to see. It not only enhanced the stars that stared in it , it launched one or two to international status . In the UK , playing an LBGT part is no big deal. The writer of the UK original , is called Russel T Davis, check out Bob and Rose, another excellent series he wrote, and just lately here in the UK , he has written a series called ... Its a Sin , about a group of young people living in the 80s/90s . Both are really good.
