Anja I grew up in a college town in Texas, bigger than a regular town, and smaller than a regular city. Same kids I went to preschool with, I graduated with, and most went to the same church. Back then it was safe for kids to be unsupervised for hours on end, without cellphones too. My folks would drop me and a friend off at the Mall theater at age 7. I used to ride my bike through the woods to get to the city swimming pool alone. We used to walk for miles on the train tracks, crossing bridges with no idea if a train was going to come. Now it seems crazy to give a kid that much freedom, back then it was normal. Oh my first job was “breaking horses”. I hated that term, but I was a horse trainer at age ten. Family friends had a ranch and I’d get $50 to train a horse to be ridden. When I think about all the wild horses I dealt with all the times I was bucked off, kicked, bit, stepped on and run into a low branch to knock me off I wonder if my folks were trying to kill me. Lol. They would say if you ain’t squirting blood or looking at a bone sticking out you’re fine. Sorry I ran off topic. Nowadays I only know the people on my street not the whole neighborhood like you were saying.

Sorry, but actually the countries that drive on the left side of the road drive on the wrong side. Driving on the left side is actually one of the stupidest things a country has decided to do. Why? Cause only 4 percent of the population is left handed. For car control it's wiser the poke and knobs (navigation, radio, airco etc.) are on the right side of the driver. I rest my case.
@LeighMariana
@LeighMariana 5 жыл бұрын
Loads of countries used to be on the left too, back when you were on horse back, so that you could hold your sword in your right hand. It changed over time for a few reasons but a lot of them changed under napoleon’s rule. The uk stuck to the left as napoleon never took charge here. There’s loads more reasons why but it’s nothing to do with which is safer :) www.worldstandards.eu/cars/driving-on-the-left/

90-95 percent of the world is right handed, you’re absolutely correct. All the more reason to keep your dominant hand on the steering wheel (you know, so you don’t end up overturned in a ditch or running into oncoming traffic) whilst your left hand fumbles with the non-essential functions of the car (like the examples you listed above; aircon, radio etc). Therefore, your argument is invalid. Sincerely, a left hander who gets a ducking heart attack whenever they take their dominant hand off the wheel to perform a non-essential function. ☺️

Lili They really are a thing. There are plain digestives, which are really boring and only good for dunking in your tea. Then there are digestives with chocolate on one side, which are much nicer. They’ve been around forever. I googled how they got the name “digestives” (it’s Sunday morning and I’ve nothing better to do) and it says on Wikipedia: “The digestive was first developed in 1839 by two Scottish doctors to aid digestion. The term "digestive" is derived from the belief that they had antacid properties due to the use of sodium bicarbonate when they were first developed. ... First manufactured in 1892, McVitie's digestive is the best-selling biscuit in the UK.”

Every time someone compares British biscuits to American cookies, they compare our trash packaged cookies to the delicious British packaged biscuits. Listen. I don't even consider packaged cookies real cookies. Unless someone baked them at home, or you bought them at a bakery, they're trash. British packaged foods in general tend to be miles better because y'all have better food laws than we do. (I studied abroad there and I love your biscuits, so nobody kill me. I'm just saying. Other than Oreos, packaged American cookies aren't even worth mentioning. Maybe Pepperidge Farms.)

I can confirm that in the EU their packaged foods are much better than ours. For example, in France, a bag of M & M's is TO DIE FOR. The BEST chocolate in cute little crunchy nubs, not waxy-plastic chocolate in perfect, tasteless buttons.

The thing is that Americans don't know the difference between a cookie and a biscuit. We have cookies in the UK too. Cookies are soft and bendy. Biscuits are hard, crunchy and they snap and crumble when you break them. eg Oreos are biscuits.

To me, the most incredible thing about the Brits I've found out after a number of times going back and forth from Italy is that they are not always polite. They have manners, politeness is a different thing. Got offended numerous times there 😄😅 But it was fun, I learned a lot! (BTW, the Italians are loud, that's not a stereotype it's the plain truth. Sorry!)

When traveling, if I see a large, boisterous, too-loud group up ahead of me blocking the sidewalk and carrying on, and I cannot make out what they're shouting to each other just yet, I look at their clothes and shoes. If they're wearing comfortable casual, they're Australians. If they're wearing to-die-for fashion, they're Italians. Never fails. The two loudest peoples on earth. ;0)

@@jeanvignes I know, we really are and it bothers many people. It's absolutely unintentional, trust me. Just try and go to a pub: 2 Italians who really engaged in a conversation can be as loud as 15 British people in there. This applies only if football isn't on and alcohol isn't involved, in which case we both become equally annoying af 😅 When I stayed in England, my English boyfriend thought I was always fighting while talking with my mom on the phone, because of the rhythm and the tone and volume of my voice! It's kind of hilarious the great difference between our cultures, even if we kind of have known each others for a long time, right? In fact, I appreciate those diffences, it's so much fun for me to just being aware of this little things. Makes you evolve as a person, it gives you a more plural idea about the rest of the world. This is just my opinion, obviously. And I love the Brits btw, especially your sense of humor and your amazing language and spoken varieties 😍

.... Hard disagree on the cookie/biscuit question- I feel like every biscuit they mentioned was something you'd buy from grocery store, but if you ask an American about their favorite cookie, very few say Oreo or Chips Ahoy, we'd instead name something you make at home or get from a bakery. Home made ALWAYS wins when it comes to cookies. Do British grannies make hobnobs? I'd be happy to be wrong🤷

I agree, ask anyone their favorite cookie and it's never a brand of packaged cookies. 😆 Everyone prefers homemade or buying the premade dough and baking it ourselves. The other stuff is when you are shopping on a budget or need a quick snack.

Prepackaged biscuits in the UK are different to the ones you get in America, they are generally better quality, ranging from very cheap to luxury. I have tried Chips Ahoy, you can get them here in the pound shop (like the dollar store) and they tasted like sugar, salt and oil to me - I'd never had a biscuit that tasted that artificial before! I do like an Oreo though. We also buy homemade things and make our own. Hobnob is a brand of biscuits, bourbons and custard creams are a type of biscuit that any shop sell. You could make them yourself if you wanted to. A lot of supermarkets here have bakeries in them that sell freshly made cookies.

I've only had an Oreo in terms of American biscuits but British Biscuits are a little different. The biscuits custard creams, bourbons, rich tea, digestive etc aren't really specific to one brand (though I think many were created by McVities). They're more a type of biscuit that shops have their own version of which you could create at home but it would be a bit odd to do so. People might be inclined to make their own shortbread or cookies (a type of biscuit which usually has a chocolate chip in it) but you can still get nice ones of them from the shops.
