I just got my Peruvian Quena .. took me a few days to figure out how to make a sound .. Still practicing, really challenging.. The top 3 holes are the hardest to maintain the sound, but I ain’t going to give up .. Thanks for the great video…🙏

Hows the quena journey going?

Man you are awesome :) Im finding it hard to make a note with mine but it looks and feels like a proper quena. Not many people who play can show me in Wales it seems. Not too many tutorials online that are in English either. Good job :)

My flute teacher found an old american concert flute at a garage sale, and put a quena mouth piece on it. It is a beautiful sounding instrument.

I have heard the Andean breathy over blowing referred to as a chuff, or a puff, and sometimes a pop

Veri nice!!! Thanks.❤️ Friends, Artist and Master. 🙏🏻👏👏👏❤️👏👏👏🙏🏻 Hi, dear Artist and dear friend, I'm Alessio Peluso from Bologna (Italy). For three months I have been learning to play Quena, magnificent instrument, together with the panflute! For some time I have not been able to emit clean notes, especially those of the second and third octave. Could it be due to the humidity that is created in the cut of the bit? Can you give me some advice on how to treat and take care of the instrument? Apart from studying and repeating the exercises, what can I do? Thank you so much my friend

Can you help, my quena doesn't play in G, it's more flat, is that normal??

If anyone could please help - when I play my quena, only the first three holes actually work. Having my fingers covering the last 3 holes doesn't change the sound whatsoever from leaving them uncovered. Any advice?

thanks for a great video. I make quena and I am trying to get the quena and south American instruments into popular play are here. There is a lot that I do not know about playing. Does the hole size effect octave play?

If I covered a hole on my 6 whole quena G would it make it pentatonic?
@MyWhistleandFlute5 жыл бұрын
You can play a pentatonic scale on your 6 hole quena, but it would be a major pentatonic scale.

Hi! I have just made my first quena-type flute with five holes, about 30 cm long with a hole diameter of about 20 mm. It took a few hours to get a (good) tone out of it. However, it requires a lot of air, so much that it makes me dizzy after a while. Is that typical for the Quena or could I change the flute somehow or maybe learn a better technique to play it? Best regards \P-O

Per-Olov Skogsberg great! I'd love to hear it!
@MyWhistleandFlute7 жыл бұрын
Per-Olov Skogsberg in my experience it should not take a lot of air to play. In fact, a small, well directed air stream is what you want. A relaxed grin, like spitting watermelon seeds, and a soft lower lip will help.

Hello! I just got my own quena flute and I managed to get some sounds out of it. After I played a little with it I wanted to take some notes. But the only notes I can play are on the first two holes. If I cover the other holes it doesn't make a difference and I get the same sound. What's going on?
@MyWhistleandFlute6 жыл бұрын
Hey Guy! Congrats on your new quena! I couldn't say for sure what is going on without seeing you play, but it could be that you are either overblowing (blowing too hard) or blowing at the wrong angle. Sometimes beginning players blow too hard and actually start off in the second octave, or get some harmonic notes instead of the ones they are trying to get. Keep a tightly formed embouchure and concentrate on that air stream hitting the splitting edge of the notch. It really should not take much air to get those lower notes. Keep practicing with all holes closed until you can consistently pick up the instrument and get a sound every time. All the best! Mark

Thanks! I'm definitely not blowing too hard. I may be blowing at the wrong angle as you said. I will have to try again and experiment a bit. Loving it so far! And by "all holes closed" you mean I shouldn't focus on the holes at all? Thanks for the quick reply :)
@MyWhistleandFlute6 жыл бұрын
Right, I would simply start by just covering all the finger holes and focus on getting a good solid tone before moving on. Then, work your way up the flute one hole at a time. When you reach a a finger hole you have trouble with the tone, stop and go back down the flute; then start again. It will come with time. Enjoy the journey!
@Guy-Usf46 жыл бұрын
Mark! Sorry to bother you but I've been practicing a lot and I have no trouble taking all the notes now. (Covering all holes and gradually working up to the highest note, which is a G I believe...) I'm also not understanding why it's a G when not covering any holes and it's ALSO a G when I'm covering all the holes? Any tips on playing higher notes would be greatly appreciated. Anxious to learn some simple songs!
@MyWhistleandFlute6 жыл бұрын
No bother! So the difference between the two G's is an octave. Basically think about a keyboard on a piano. If you play the G above middle C and then go 8 notes above that, you would be playing a G as well, but one octave higher. So when you have all the holes covered, and you play the lower G, then blow a little harder, it jumps an octave, or 8 note above. Most quenas can play two octaves. Playing the upper octave requires a faster airstream, and greater control of your embouchure. Let me know if that makes sense.

Very helpful. Thank you. :-)

One should not change the tone by changing the flute's angle during playing. The angle must be constant.
