Quentin Blake wasn't the first illustrator - Fantastic Mr. Fox with Colin Jack | AB E025

Colin Jack is currently a co-director at Dreamworks Animation, and has storyboarded on everything from Ed, Edd n Eddy, Captain Underpants, Puss in Boots, The Croods, Boss Baby as well as more recently been Head of Story on Trolls Band Together.
As we siphoned through a list of potential candidate works to talk about, he quickly decided on Fantastic Mr. Fox, the 2009 debut animation from visionary director Wes Anderson. I was so excited ot get to share a discussion about his work with Colin.

I remember the art teachers in Ontario frowning on anime, they said to make sure to not include it in your portfolio when applying to any art or design program. My art teachers in Jamaican High School got tired of out dragon ball stylized anatomy. Its nice that everything more open now, you even see classes in making Manga popping up in allot of schools that used to shun it.

And I do understand them in terms of diversifying your approach, but at such an early stage it’s just time with the pencil so the specific style you’re drawing shouldn’t matter

@@Any-mation I concur, though in the end I’m actually happy I was pushed to do more, we did basic perspective in high school in Jamaica and life drawing every single class. So hours a day dedicated to drawing your class mates, still life, drawing outside in graphite and coloured pencil made it easier when I moved to Canada and started Design school. Plus I once I finished the assignment for the day I was back to drawing anime style. In fact 2 of my SBA I did for Art CXC (O Levels) were heavily anime and comic influenced.
