The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker were basically the same movie; a wealthy evil genius wants to create a new and perfect society. In The Spy Who Loved Me it was to be underwater and in Moonraker it was outer space.

Moonraker is perfectly at home in 1979, utterly fun, did QT miss the boat chase in South America (he compares the gondola chase to boat chase in Live and Let Die. Moonraker not only has a boat chase, it has a boat battle)? Moonraker is Bond roided out like they took the Lamborghini LP400 and started attaching wings and flared out fenders to it. Moonraker is the Bond that steps into Cannonball Run. That was a time in cinema when everything was trying to outdo everything, we were five years into the summer meatball movie concept, which is what Hollywood has survived off of to this day.

It wasn't Versailles castle, but Chantilly castle and its 17th century stables. First James Bond I ever saw, also, it was dumber than the films I knew, including Star Wars, but most entertaining. This is why I totally agree with the review. Thank you.

I love Moonraker, but I sometimes have to be in the right mood because otherwise the jump from location to location can grate. I even find a general subtext to the film, Drax's plan to procreate the Earth with perfect specimens, Bond lured to the temple by a hot woman, Bond having to wrestle a snake in front of smiling hot women, it all feels vaguely Freudian and lends well to the character arc for Jaws and the one time Drax breaks his cool demeanor. I agree with Anthony that goofy Bond is best Bond, especially Lewis Gilbert's films.

I loved The Spy Who Loved Me cause it hit all the right marks. I saw it when I was 9. The audience cheered and laughed and felt like part of the movie. It was perfect. Moonraker tripped over its own feet. No cheering from the crowd. The worst part was when they set Jaws up with a girlfriend and tried to make him into a good guy. All these space shuttles and designer uniforms. Uhhhh!! I was a disappointed 11 year old.

The way I put Roger Moore's Bond movies together is Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Man with the Golden Gun, and then Moonraker. After that, Roger's movies feel different. For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and View to A Kill don't connect with the first set so well. They are good, but they feel 10 years apart, almost like a reboot.

Love listening to Tarantino - even when I disagree with him. I think Moore was young enough for the first two movies he did (I think Golden Gun came out the year after Live and Let Die - fairly short gap). The Moonraker theme is beautiful, it's not very catchy because it isn't really like a pop song, but if you listen to the song and the score away from the movie it's one of Barry's best. Barry's parents both died within months of each other that year, and he wrote two scores around that time - Moonraker and Somewhere in Time, and they're both incredibly said and beautiful scores.

It's not entirely true that the Spy Who Loved Me wasn't following a film trend. It was part of the sort of minor niche of the time for aquatic themed movies. Films such as Jaws, Orca, Tentacles and the Deep, etc.

For me Moonraker is one of the best and worst Bond films. It is the utlimate mixed bag of some of the highest high's and lowest low's of the Bond series. My problems were mostly just turning Jaws good and having him fall in love at the end was beyond corny. There were a few ridiculous slapstick moments that didn't belong in the film but those were common to all Roger Moore Bond films. The musical score was gorgeous, the opening pre credits stunt scene and when Bond gets dizzyingly stuck on that space machine early on and the hand to hand fight scene were all awesome. As was the scene on those cable cars. It's the perfect movie to throw on when you just want some entertainment but aren't in a mood to pay super close attention to everything.

Moonraker is an engaging film. It is absolutely a silly Bond movie, but I wouldn’t call it bad. I agree with QT that Lois Chiles doesn’t make a good Bond girl. It’s a combination of poor writing for her character and playing it straight with no hint of sexuality. There are other Bond girls who are meant to be more serious, less flirty, but they still come across as sexy. Lois Chiles only rarely has a scene when she can turn it on, and it’s not enough.

I love the theme music, even more than Goldfinger and Diamonds are forever. I saw this film back the year it was released, And I saw it on a double bill with ALIEN. of all the Roger Moore Bond films I enjoyed this the most, but of course, it was over 40 years ago, so if I saw it again, probably my feeling would change. After watching FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, a film that just bored me, I never went to the theater to see a Roger Moore Bond film again.

Quentin, be serious. You're criticising another director? You! All your films are bloated, leaden paced, and derivative of other, more succinct, pacier originals. They have no original music, just retro songs that appeal to you. F-bombs and bloody violence are not enough to make a good story, QT. Moonraker may be silly, but it's no sillier than any of yours. At least it doesn't drag on and on.

This guy is romanticizing a very bad film. Moonraker is a pretty bad movie, though all Bond films are great and 80s films are fun as well. Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are FAR superior films. The nerve gas pods were a very frightening concept. And Live and Let Die is a GREAT FILM.
