I've always wanted to catch a big Barbel and the river Trent is famous for such specimens. Despite a collection of unfortunate sessions I eventually found my feet and caught my PB river Barbel.

My Mate let you in the gate that night. I remember it well because I had a 15lb barbel 30 minutes after he spoke to you cooking your noodles outside 😂 Pete and gammo will put you right, there’s not many bailiffs like them two!

Understand there are some huge river carp in the Trent and they are very powerful muscular fish. That is probably what when on the run and found the snag. I have had i happen to me before a few times.

Double the length of your hooklength (6-7ft), if flow is strong, just ket a huge bow if line out and will hold all the time. Never used more then a 5oz cage on there. Well done on your fish

Not trying to be a know all but I wouldn’t be using expensive Nash flake as the bulk of my feed. Barbel feed over gravel 90% of the time, sucking bits into their mouths and sifting through it and also turning over stones and pebbles, that’s just where the species looks for it’s food most of the time. You want to be fishing different sized pellets and hemp, wet the night before. The pellets mix in with the gravel so they don’t flow down stream too quickly and the hemp mimics the insects they eat. Flake will wash down stream way too quickly. Don’t try to he carpy when you’re fishing for barbel, it’s not necessary. Once you’ve got the rods barbel fishing is pretty cheap bait wise.
