I disagree with the comment that Domingo singing high notes is strained here. I love his sound and control throughout. He is supporting the notes quite effectively and hits them cleanly and he doesn't sound screechy or pained. The volume level is incredible! Pavarotti and Krauss may have had naturally higher voices but Domingo was fully under control. Wonderful performance.

Much obliged for posting this video Ursey39!Placido Domingo was in his vocal prime at the time and,despite the high tessitura of the Duke's part,one which he despises owing to the blatant cynicism of the character,he fared quite well in this production.For those interested, several arias from the same 1977 performance are also available on KZbin.

el duque de Mantua le pega a Domingo como a un servidor un traje de Obispo. Horrible. Este rol es para un lírico o un lírico ligero: Kraus, Pavarotti, Lemeshev, Alva, Bjorling,, Raimondi...pero para Domingo es de una estridencia insoportable La ópera ha perdido la cabeza.

This was rapidly paced. Placido made his voice fit the piece - even though it was made for a lyric tenor. His vocal agility is amazing. All these people who laud Corelli (another dramatic tenor) should look at this, then look at how Corelli butchered the same aria. I saw Pavarotti sing this live. He was truly amazing with that huge lyric voice even though he was not quite one of my favorite singers.

Por cierto es Lírico Spinto, basta ver su interpretación de Canio en Pagliacci, de Verdi o como Turiddu en Cavalleria Rusticana de Mascagni.

This happened to Mr. Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti (he sung heavy roles but never tried to sound darker like Domingo did) , Bjorling (some live recordings of concerts and operas let us to realize that he sang half of tone down when at the beggining he was a Tenor of an easy hogh C#) In fact people who listened to him live realized that he had a small volume voice. At least not like his recordings apparently show to us.

@waltersoto777 Señor con el debido respeto, no solo sé de ópera, de hecho la interpreto; el sr Domingo es tenor lirico, pues domina conmas potencia y coly brillantez la escala de los agudos, basta con escucharlo en rigoletto, es una voz tan extraodinaria y flexible que ha podido interpretar papeles de dramatico, lo cual no significa que sea dramático. ¿Domingo es un tenor lírico? Dios bendito. Ha sido siempre un spinto con tintes dramáticos...Líricos han sido Kraus, Pavarotti, Alva, Flórez, Camarena, Bjorling, Lemeshev...y, por cierto, el Duque de Mantua es a Domingo lo mismo que un par de pistolas a un Santo Cristo. Espantoso.

Om, just that I belive that the kinde of tenor is like this examples: Leggero: Nicola MOnti Lirico Leggero: Alfredo Kraus, Pavarotti, Bjorling, Gianni Raimondi. Lirico: Gigli, Gedda Lirco Spinto: Corelli, Roswaenge, John O´Sullivan, Martinucci. Dramatico: Well... I have problems with this because I think may be is a subjetc of Spinto. "could be" Vinay, Giacomini. I can accept DOmingo as Lirico... but spinto or dramatico? Not for me :)

Efectivamente. Añadiría como líricos ligeros a Luigi Alva y Lemeshev. Domingo ha sido siempre un claro tenor spinto y su rol de Duque de Mantua es un verdadero desastre en todos los sentidos.

Domingo a lirico-leggero?! Pavarotti and Bjorling are lirico-leggero. Not Domingo. His voice is much stronger and darker. His early voice was almost baritonal, in 60s he turn a lirico tenor, but after 1980 he return at spinto and dramatic roles. He can sing lirico leggero roles simply because he is a wonderful and many-sider singer and his voice is very long (E1;F1 - B4;C5 in early years; F1-A#4 today) but his natural sound is dramatic.

I strongly belive (may be wrong) that what meakes a singer Dramatic or Spinto are not the roles that teh singer use to sing but the voice features. With all respect my opinion: PAvarotti, Domingo, Bjorling where Lirco Leggero tenors but the sung heavier roles that, of course, forced their voices to trasnform according of teh demand and that is why thet loose the habilities to singe higer register roles instead giving density and dark to their vocies.

Why? Do you think he is a lirico-spinto? I think Domingo's natural voice is dramatic (although he sing as lirico-spinto or lirico, and sometimes as a lirico-leggero too).

But theres is a biggest problem nowdays and it is related with the lack of good technique that makes suffer so much tenors and is about baritones: who is a real baritone today? Some poeple use to say thah DOmingo is a Bariton. I do not think so but many singers of today that sings as baritons are really tenors. "Teachers" have not idea of what to do with this kind of voices, huge sound, dark and have difficulties with de F, F# and G. Then this is the reference to name them as baritons.

Sing dramatic roles do not makes you a dramatic tenor. At the beginning he was a lirico leggero with aproximation to a lyric. That is why he always had those "not easy" high notes: Any singer who pretends to sound louder than his possibilities will lose the high notes skills, someday.

Very Good. This aria is unsuitable for a dramatic tenor like Domingo, but he sing it very well (and he is a great actor) Of course, Kraus and Pavarotti are another matter!

I belive a singer cannot become annthother "thing" against the nature. Just listen to DOmingo´s erliest recordings... singing in tune, for example, Mi Par D'Udir Ancora (with an easy High C and a less heavier voice). Pavarotti had to stop singing many roles or do some high notes in some roles. Bjorling final recordings sung whit the key low.

the same happends with Jose Carreras and is happening with Villazon... tryin to sound bigger and darker... singing full alwasy must do something in the voice.... usually voices with difficult on the hogh notes... MArio del Monaco for example... as Corelli says: Del Monaco has a more "muscular voice" . Not emaning with tis their are not good artist. Is just my opinion about voice.

Eso dígaselo al director que es el que marca el tempo, Domingo seguro que hubiera estado encantado de haber cantado este aria con un tempo más lento, cantar a esta velocidad es matador para el tenor, por lo demás se ajusta a la partitura eso sí, sin olvidar que la tesitura de este rol le queda tirante eso lo dice el propio Domingo.

His high notes are incredibly strained. I realize he's a good performer and everything, but the recordings of Kraus, even in his old age, are much better.
