I have this book and while it’s very pretty there are two things stopping it from getting played: 1: all players need this big book to roll up a character, or you have to spend a lot of time sharing the one book. It’s a barrier to entry. A QuickStart booklet would be fantastic. 2: a lack of ready to play adventures. There’s no quick play scenario in the book. This raises the workload on the DM when the focus should be getting used to the system.

Break is so close to exactly what I want in a fantasy RPG of this type but it misses in big enough ways that I feel compelled to continue working on my own game. That said, I bet it is going to be tons of fun for those that dive into it.

Adventures is what it's all about. There are a double-handful of potentially great anime-themed RPGs, but not an adventure module among them (except for Sword World, which has dense translations of replays as opposed to actually useful adventures). That said, this does look cool and fun. :)

I'm glad I watched this. When I looked through my copy I said, "Oh jeez, this looks complicated as hell, I'll never get my players to buy in." But this looks actually really manageable and having the PDF means I don't need to worry about everyone sharing the one physical copy.

Yet another clone of the old that simplified and then added more and turned out to be 400 pages. I love the visual design for accessibility but somehow it feels a little overtuned from design perspective. Like I am reading a commercial. Not my thing. I tend to favour minimalistic designs that maximize creative twists like Into the Odd.
@Drago58992 күн бұрын
I thought this would de a neat game, but was ultimately disappointed to see that the final product is just another OSR game with a sloppy paint job over top. I love OSR games, and mechanically it's a 4/5, but everything else is a 2/5 at best. Break! claims to be inspired by 80's and 90's Anime, but I don't see any of that reflected in the rules. At all. The classes are just the same OSR classes with different names. For example, Battle Princess is simply a war-priest, Sneak is simply a thief, and Champion is simply a fighter. Checks are d20 roll under, but combat is still the modern d20 roll over to hit a TN slop. They have a few goofy things thrown in here and there (like the quirk system), but none of that constitutes "anime," let alone 80's and/or 90's Anime. The system seem to be built for silly, slice-of-life adventures, but the mechanics are full on SW&S OSR. I am not sure that is going to click with the intended player base. Throw on top of that Art with a high quality but questionable aesthetic and choices (why did they paint the Battle princess's hand white instead of giving her a glove?) and the author's fetishes disguised as "conditions" and I am not sure what exactly to make of this. It promises anime style adventure, but instead delivers an OSR game wearing a third party Halloween costume that vaguely resembles something akin to what a modern redditor thinks old school anime was like. It's disappointing, frustrating, and is borderline false advertising.

You could just use the rules without the aesthetic. Nothing says you have to copy the author's view of their world.
@gackybass2 күн бұрын
I could say the same about the disgustingly phoned-in art that most mainstream RPGs have been using for the last 5-10 years. Fortunately, it's a rulebook, not an artbook, and I can just ignore the art.
@mactireliath23562 күн бұрын
@@gackybass I feel that way about Middle Earthers making everything medieval and dirty. Such a tired aesthetic imo.
@x51322 күн бұрын
@@MajigerIt depends on the rule set. But in this case, the aesthetics clearly leak into the rules and wording used within them, such as the 'princess' classes or adversaries like 'murder maid'. You can always disregard the art, and homebrew any rule, wording or flavour text you don't like, but at some point you have to ask yourself 'if im going to change so much, is this actually a system I would enjoy?'. I wouldn't. I do enjoy my ttrpgs being a bit closer to simulation (not too much, because it becomes a slog tracking everything), or just a vague frame of rules, just enough to contextualize the roleplay.
@Majiger2 күн бұрын
@@x5132 I agree with your sentiment, but if anime itself is the issue, there isn't that much that needs to be changed to ignore that aspect. Personally, I would argue the Princess class has nothing anime about it. You can easily play out the Battle Princess as a Jean of Arc if she was more about being a bubbly character rather than a military figure. If you are referring to the Murder Princess, I still don't see anything "anime" about it, unless you consider anything outside the rigid historical medieval setting as anime. There is not a single mention of a Maid in the PDF that I can find, so if you can tell me a page, I'd like to take a look. Chib's can easily be replaced with Gnomes with little to no issue. In my opinion, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Now, if this was Dolemnwood and you wanted to remove all the fairy tale aspect out of it, then yes I would 100% agree with you and tell that person to just play OSE.
