I live in Minnesota and being Asian, I understand how it feels to think/have others staring at you. I was recently in Irvine for work and the entire time I felt like the majority considering I saw so many Asians, LOL

Is your husband white too? Cause if so they will NEVER understand. They can say sweet things like oh it's cause you're beautiful but in reality it's because we're people of color and they don't know how to act around us and it's weird. We literally just exist and they stare. That is one thing I miss about California and I can't talk to anyone about it here because all my family members are white here except my uncle Lester who I adore.

@ yes he is. I totally agree. I live in NYC so it’s very diverse here and I don’t experience that but when I go elsewhere where I am the minority I get the death stare. People were staring at me at Walmart and I said out loud to my husband why are they staring at me. He thinks I am imagining things. Mind you I came to America when I was four and grew up here.

@@AprilAthena7if you are near the twin cities or Minneapolis area, we are super diverse here in MN and filled with many Asian ethnic. Sadly, it can get pretty racist out in the suburbs. There’s so many Asian restaurants and Asian grocery stores if you’re ever in the area. Feel free to DM me if you ever need any recommendations!!

Until he witnessed over and over again, every time he wasn’t exactly next to me, I had so manyyyy incidents the laughs and stares and whispers. My husband came and said what is it? They all ran away. This happened to me in California as well, we lived in Folsom near eldorado hills, I went grocery shopping and literally everyone surrounded me, stopped and stared at me not in a good way like oh you look hot, no more like what are you doing here stare. 😢my neighbors were all white and refused to talk to me and would only talk to my white husband. I once even asked how are they doing, because they were gone for a while with an ambulance, it was just my reaction. And they stared and didn’t answer me. My husband finally admits it that white folks are just plain racist, prejudice against POC, they view us as second citizens.

There’s Filipino restaurants too in the twin cities. Manila Sizzling Wok, Pinoy Fusion (open Fri-Sun inside Phil-Orinetal), Apoy, Kalsada, and Asian Mart has a Filipino deli inside open Fri-Sun.

I felt the exact same way when my family moved to Idaho. I went from being the “majority” in California to the “minority” It was an adjustment. 🤎 I also remember my California attire was so different than what everyone wore in Idaho. Slowly my style started to change based on my new daily activities. So much growth for me in many different ways. After 10 years in Idaho we just moved to Washington 😀 Much love April!

I’m Filipina and married to a white man and when we go to places with predominantly white people I get stared at, but I like to think it’s cause they’ve never seen an exotic person like me before 💁🏻‍♀️ I know it may feel weird for people to stare, but I just be minding my own business looking fine, as you should do too! ❤

April, you need to visit the other Asian stores. Like dragon star, sun food, so much cheaper than Asian Mall! Other asian stores are much cheaper than the Asian Mall and Pho Mai is alright. Pho 126 & stone pho is so much better.. omg you need to check out other pho places!!!

Honestly it can be a mixture of reasons. But to be truthful, Minnesota is diverse in the cities but the suburbs aren’t AT all. Another thing that you will come to notice is people in MN don’t dress up much. You are always dressed nicely and put together. That will make you stand out more than anything here 😂. Minnesotans love their sweaters, Uggs, and they even be wearing shorts in the winter (not me) 😂. But don’t fret, you will find your spots where you feel comfortable. It will just take a little bit of exploring, meeting friends, and getting settled in.

i think you notice people looking at you because you're already going in with that mind set "people are going to stare at me' I believe it's an insecurity of ours coming from a 'minority' also in our culture there tends to be more judgy people looking at others to talk about others instead of looking within themselves. We are wired this way because we didn't grow up with a certain type of 'privilege' where we're going to be accepted everywhere. Girl walk in there with confidence and don't even make eye contact with anyone except the people you're there to meet and the employees. A lot of times we also try to be polite, nice and acknowledge others with eye contact and a smile but most people don't care they're living with their own problems and if you're coming in all happy it stands out to them and they want to observe you.
