definitely agree with the way folk's player collect. I'm 43 and all my card friends growing up always took to the big-name guys. I was a Howard Johnson guy myself! Bought a PSA 10 auto recently for the collection. Still have all my childhood collection!

When you were talking about the 1991 Fleer baseball set, even before you mentioned the Sabo, I immediately thought of the Griffey in that set because he obviously looks like he just hit a two hopper to short and is being thrown out in the process of the photo being taken. I have that card in a PSA 10 because I collect some Griffey and it's a card from my childhood. I very specifically remember being at a friend's house for a trading session and seeing a 1991 Fleer baseball card for the first time and thinking about how incredibly yellow it was and how wildly different it was from any other baseball card I had seen before then. But it's like they were trying to use pictures of players failing lol

Most of the highest grade hand-cut cards were cut in modern times. They have to know your set however. You don't want to turn a 3 into an A. I can tell you on 60s post you need to have the cut line remaining on the card to get a number grade. Also perforated stuff don't cut with scissors PSA will slap it with an A, you need to separate it the natural way

To follow up on the hand cut card question…what are the “rules” with say, the mid-70s hostess cards? What is the “correct” way to cut them out? Should the black dotted lines be showing? How do you get, or what is, a perfect cut?

The 1981 initial offering of Donruss baseball was my overall worst of all time. Right out of the pack the card were poorly collated (you’d get 4 of the same player followed by 3 of another player ect ect), the cars stock was extremely thin and cheap, the card design was uninspiring and a lot of cards had stupid errors on them..,,.that’s why ever today, the two boxes full of card still are not worth much.

Love the content but man even after the last few debacles with your psa submissions, that's the only company you mention. On the topic of waiting, you talked about waiting months with psa, when sgc is like 10 days. Far more accurate on the grade and way faster. In order for psa to get their act together, you guys really need to drop them lower in your priority list. Make them feel it and only then might they change
@jamesadams8207
@jamesadams8207 3 ай бұрын
Maybe when SGC cards sell for similar or better prices, it will happen. The slabs are big and bulky and take up more space than PSA slabs. And lastly, the PSA registry is one of the great things in the hobby.
@richardbianco9674
@richardbianco9674 3 ай бұрын
@jamesadams8207 that's the point. They will when more people decide to go with the better grader. Frankly you can get very similar pricing if you have just a bit of patience. I have seen sgc prices equal to psa many times the last few months also.

If a snubbed Fred Mcgriff could be used as a cutoff, how do you contend Manny Machado "will" get into the HOF? Because even if he plays for 5 more amazing years ( Not going to happen) he will still be way under McGriffs stats. Claiming such about Machado, could be used for profitable gain. Please clarify, and why you feel so strongly about a lower performing star late in his career.

I pulled a Ken Griffey in 1989. I kept it in a screw down. But it was a screw down with a space for the card. I recently sent it in a though my LCS. I got a 9. To me this means the card was always a 9. I doubt I got knock down from a 10 by the screw down.

I think 90s cards will always be considered “modern”. Just like in art, post-modern becomes an era. There’s already “ultra-modern” for newer cards. Vintage is up to 60/70s. Junk wax is 80s/early 90s. Modern is mid 90s - 2000s. I consider Prizm era as “ultra” modern but as the hobby progresses that may change.

I don't mind the 1st Bowman's of old players, but as long as they keep it SSP. It doesn't spoil anything about the product and nothing wrong with a little fun chase. I much prefer the 1st Bowman Autos of Retired players though. Again, only if they keep it rare. Maybe 1-2 players a year and everything low numbered.

I recently got back into collecting and went through all my old commons boxes. the most valuable card I found (and now I'm gonna throw up in MY mouth a little bit) is the Mark Jackson Hoops cards w/ the idiot brothers on the card. I hate that card. I get it - it is interesting. I even relayed the story to my wife because I had been out of the hobby and had no idea why PSA lists that card w/ an assigned value. but I don't like celebrating something like this as part of our hobby. I also have no interest in owning any OJ cards. I loved the guy back in the day, but yeah.. don't really need to add more. hate those cards, too. hard pass.

I have a way to prevent the "vertical scratches" from graded team bags, especially the tighter Cardboard Gold variety. When you put the slab into the team bag, before you slide it down, pinch the sides of the team bag. The vertical scratches are created when the slab is rubbed against the inside of the team bag. Do the pinch method when removing the team bag as well. So far this has worked very well for me. I also have solid success improving/removing those lines with Plastx.

IMO... 1989 is the cutoff for a card to be "Vintage"... 1990s - 2000s will always be considered Junk Wax (80% of cards are worthless)... 2000 - 2020 is the Golden era (highest value for most sports/players)... I feel 2021 - 2030 will be the "speculation era" (Very similar to the 90s - 2000s)

I’ve clicked on a few of your videos now. Think they’re great, love your calm common-sense approach to the hobby. I also consider myself a collector investor dealer in that order. Just really quick, it’s clear that nobody will ever agree on this. But, for me, I will never call 1981 topps, 1986 topps baseball (ANYTHING from the 80s, any sport VINTAGE)! These were incredibly overproduced years and in a time when collectors had an abundance of ways to keep their cards in great condition. It just can’t be about age . Pretty soon we’d be calling 1991 proset hockey vintage (ain’t no way bro (as the kids say)). I grew up in the hobby when the “purists “ would say 1973 and before is vintage because of the high numbers. Perhaps I could be convinced to call the rest of the 70s vintage but I’d draw the line there! Well that was my long-winded post! Thanks for your content

For the "Trading Card" label at the top of PSA holders... even if someone JUST wants to get the auto authenticated/graded, I still think PSA needs to create a minimum requirement for the card itself to be “authentic”. That would not only eliminate/curb counterfeits, but it would eliminate the need for that silly designation on the slab that honestly delegitimizes PSA imo. I think newer folks to the hobby assume a PSA case = everything is authentic. Their actual company name is "Professional Sports Authenticator", and the fact that they will slab a potentially fake card feels very off.

For hand-cut cards, I would view the grade as guidance on the condition of the surface / image and the authenticity of the card. The sharpness of the corners or edges is irrelevant as all hand-cut cards are the equivalent of authentic - trimmed. So, go nuts with trimming yourself. The exception is when the cut is within any dashed lines that may have been provided by the manufacturer.

Don't stress the condition of your slabs, in a decade or so, the grading companies will create the NEED for you to have your cards reslabbed to the "new slab" in order to realize full value of your card at that time.
