I appreciate you and your channel so much! I am a first year beekeeper in Northeast Alabama and am enjoying learning about the craft and working with some of God's most wonderful creatures. I have learned so much from different channels on youtube like Barnyard Bees, Fat Bee Man and Skinny Bee Man and your channel as well . These four channels have been such a blessing to me and are helping me develop my own style of beekeeping from all the great information given by all of you. I especially like the information you gave about using smoking to mask the hive smell to help introduce new bees, and there is a youtube channel named Pop's Shack about a beekeeper in Australia, it is very interesting to see how their seasons are the opposite of ours , and Christmas is the prime bee production time there. Again, thank you so much for sharing with all of us your years of experience and knowledge.

Great to see you! The question I would have is what amount of honey is an average per 10 frame hive each year. Thank you Tim! I am in southern Indiana.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
A deep box will weight about 50 lbs when full. If your asking how much honey can a 10 frames hive make each year for your, the answer is a large difference from none to, say 80 or 90 lbs. There are so many factors involved. If the colony swarms, you won't make any honey
@natserog6 жыл бұрын
so good to see you back Tim...we missed you!! My question is: What is the least amount of honey you leave your bees in the winter
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Hard question. We run a 2 brood chamber hive. We take all the supers off regardless leaving the 2 brood chambers. Most of the hive have enough honey for Winter but if they don't, We mark them with a brick standing up on end and know to feet it. Different parts of the country are different but 50 lbs is a good amount to leave.

Hello again, thanks for answering my last question. The question that I have for you is, there is so many videos about how to feed your bees either pollen or sugar water, my question is: if you want a sustainable apiary, wouldn’t it be better to allow them to have enough resources to survive on there own? To be “SELF RELIANT “ Thanks again!

Good to see you back! This is my first year beekeeping. I started with two packages. I grafted some queens and made 8 nucs and two splits. I also caught an August swarm so I have 13 colonies. With making so many colonies I feel several of them are light on feed. I fed what I could in the fall but still don’t think they have enough. I know I’m going to have to watch them and feed. What do you think of feeding dry sugar on newspaper in top of the hive? I’ll probably also try some candy boards. Before I do whichever, I wanted to get some opinions. By the way I’m in northern Ohio. Thank you very much.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Wow, you come out with all guns blazing. Granulated sugar is a method of keeping a colony from starving. There can be more than one variation on feeding them. Let say you have a strong colony and they have enough honey for Winter. Place a ( door screening ) on top of the strong hive. Place a stick on top of the screen at the rear as to give the colony you are now going to place on top of the screening. Place a weak colony ( by weak I mean a colony that does not have enough bees to make it thru the Winter. on top of the screen. On top of the weak colon y place a 3/4" plywood with a rough hole in the center so a fruit jar will fit in it and not fall thru. This fruit jar plywood method is the best of all feeders barrow now. You will be surprise how a colony with few bees will make it thru Winter this way. There can always be exceptions and your weather is much colder than ours....keep us posted.......tim

Thank you tim for your input. I will try that. I spent all winter watching videos, lectures and reading with anticipation of getting some bees this summer. I kept going back to Micheal palmers methods of keeping bees so everything I’ve done has been based on how he does things. Waiting all winter for spring to come seem to take forever so I wanted to do as much as I could this year as far as making queens, nucs etc... it is very enjoyable. I can’t wait for next spring to see how my bees do this winter. 😊 thanks again

Tim, here’s a funny. I stopped by my mom and dads one day to see my dads new pole barn. When I got there I noticed he had it built way back on the property. I said “ dad, why did you build this so far back on the property?” He replied “ well, I had your mother stand at the back door of the house and start yelling for me. I started walking and when I got to where I couldn’t hear her anymore, that’s where I built it.”

@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Feed only when the bee need it. do not, do not spill any around the outside of the hive as that can be fatal to the colony. If the top deep brood box is full of honey, that honey will weigh about 50 lbs and that is enough. Pick up you hive in each season of the year and get a baseline as to what is heavy and what is light in weight. The absolue best way to feed feed bees, even in the dead of winter is what I told ( john Mckee ) below. See my video on this at kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoatpn-um8yBkKs

Hello Mr Tim, Bottling my first honey crop. I’ve had it sit for a few days after extracting but noticed a lot of bubbles in the bottles of honey. I imagine it is simply cosmetic but what could I do to remove most of them before bottling? I thought letting it sit would accomplish this. On a good note-it does taste REAL good. Joe Alpharetta Ga
@WallsBeeMan5 жыл бұрын
Those bubbles taste good to. Did you happen to inspect the surface of the comb before you cut it off to extract ? If your combs and or frames were left over night in the building before you extracted, the honey would have cooled a good bit and the air or bubbles would be much slower getting out of the honey. We always made sure that we extracted the honey the same day we pulled the frames or robbed the honey. When you bottle the honey, bee careful to not let it drop straight down into the jar because that will create bubbles. Let the flow hit the upper part of the jar and flow down the side of the jar. There is a very very slim chance you have fermented honey in the frames and that will be bubbles. Stay in touch.........tim

Mr Durham, another question. In Atlanta, with cooler weather Below what temperature should I not open my hives? If later it warms up & the bees are flying should I do a quick check on them for any reason? Thank you
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
If you checked them in late Summer and everything looked OK, enough honey, main thing, then there is not much you can do for them. If your going thru withdrawals then it is OK to take the top off and say hello. Let it be 60 degrees or higher if you take out a frame of eggs, larvae or brood. Get in the habit of picking up your hive in all season to have an idea ( base line ) if your hive has enough honey or not

Dear Tim, This is my sixth year as a Kentucky Bee Keeper. This year (2020), I have begun to notice several instances of a mysterious wetness on the frames of many of my active hives. It appears to me as if someone has poured olive oil on the frames and the excess oil dripped off. BTW: There is no visible wetness on the hive floor. Also, wax moths have been a nightmare this summer. I always freeze all frames that show evidence of wax moths. Do you have any comment about the source of this mysterious wetness?
@WallsBeeMan4 жыл бұрын
Michael, from what you are telling me, it sounds like hive beetle slime. Sorry. The beetles, aided by their partner in crime-a symbiotic yeast-produce slime, mimic pheromones, and ferment honey. search the AMJ American Bee Journal article beetle slime, Kodamaea, small hive beetles, wandering larvae

I live in mo. My question is On comb honey. From start to finish how or what do you do with each hive for the best results.
@WallsBeeMan4 жыл бұрын
Every hive you plan on comb honey must be strong. 1. The hive can not swarm. Must have a good queen, lays a lot, No excluder 2. Use only shallow suppers 3. Use thin foundation with no wires. They call this ( comb honey foundation ) 4. One super at a time. Foundation must be straight in every frame Have all 10 frames snug together with th ext4ra space on the outside. As the combs in the center frames get about 1/2 pulled out, you can now give the center frames a little bit of space so you will now not have the space on the outside of the frames. When you are certain the center frames are a 100% drawn out ( capped ) you can move the capped frames to the outside. Keep us posted.......tim

I caught a late swarm the third week of September in one of my swarm boxes. I since have transferred them to a five frame nuc. They were queenless and I bought a queen and installed. So far they are not working much and not using the sugar water on top feeder. They are alive and well inside hive but not working. Is this normal. I’ve added honey frames and brood frames.

Question: Why is it so important to dress up burr comb on the bottom of the frames on the bottom box, and why is it so important to dress up frames in general?
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
The bottom and top box should be rotated every 30 days or so in the Spring. The burr comb on the bottom box on the bottom of the frames does not have to be cut off till you rotate the boxes. Since you have to cut it off every 3 days, it serves them bees no purpose and they waste their energy building. Keeping all burr comb cleaned up or cut off make it easier & more fun the next time you go into the hive plus they are wasting energy as well. Good Question.............tim
