Quick and Easy Belt Sander Jig From Scraps

Bill made a simple and handy jig for the workshop. This one holds a portable belt sander and transforms it into a stationary edge sanding station. The project started off with an old Craftsman 3" belt sander and some leftover scraps. With a little imagination and some exact approximations, we're left with a very, very useful way to transform an existing power tool.

I have this same exact sander and know all about the meandering it likes to do when I'm sanding. I need this jig in my life ASAP

Thanks very much. I have the same ol' Craftsman 3" belt sander and this will turn a seldom used tool into a much more productive one.

Before buying this sander I would use a rotary sander kzbin.infoUgkx3Pc2vLXfcgM5oIpF1iYcIWyFhHUC-G6v and didn't see the need for a belt sander. Boy was I wrong. this belt sander does the job quickly and gives a professional finish to the wood work.

Nice jig. I’m going to make one, but mine is going to have a piece on the bottom of the main platform that will be held in my vise.

I don’t know if I ever subscribed to a channel after 1 video. My kinda dude--it doesn’t always have to be exotic design and fine finish. Sometimes it just needs to serve a function. Full disclosure--I subscribed to Triple L Rustic Designs after 1 view (spoiler: Zoe does woodworking in yoga pants. She does not skip leg day).

I hate it when my belt sander meanders and chases small animals in the workshop. Thank you! The small animals are safe once more.

You did a super job! I really like how you explained everything so well. Great deal on the scroll saw too! You have motivated me to get mine out and also to make this jig. I was going to buy the belt/disc sander from Harbor Freight, but I'd rather save cash and do it your way now. Thank you once again! Subscribed! Matt

good video fyi i did Woodworking Professionally for 25 years and as my hobby for more than 35 years you should build a safe rt fence on the front area of tht belt sanding jig one of the nastiest injuries ive personall y seen was a co worker had a belt sander suck in his fingers and sand off the skin right to his bones as luck would have it that paticular day i was the only one with a First Aid kit and i bandaged him up for a hospital trip Doctors spent months grafting shin to his fingers and i know it was pretty painful if you fabricate a guard over that front wheel i would bet that could prevent that from happening in my Co workers case he was holding the Beltsander in his hands when it slipped and caught hi fingers like every Woodworking injury everyone a;ways says it happened so quickly they couldn’t believe at first it did I always considered myself to be pretty lucky that at 56 years of age i have not suffered any hand injuries that a couple of bandaids couldn’t fix up to allow me to heal

Starting to be mine as well, funny as the first time I used it I got so scared by the sudden torque I didn't dare touch it anymore and used a jigsaw to cut out the piece of metal I was using instead.

Really appreciated this video and have already viewed it a number of times. Have a belt sander that looks just like yours, and have been wanting to build this kind of jig. Was also hoping to see how it would be used to sharpen lathe tools and chisels (as mentioned at end of video), but could not find that follow up video. Thank-you!

What a good video, well explained and interesting. I just acquired a secondhand belt sander and scroll saw as my first powertools. My sander is lumpy, irregular and full of vent holes though, so a jig will be challenging, but this video gave me some good ideas. Thanks !

Move your tumb further away, when the bit slips off the screw it ends up in your tumb. It happens to me once and this is once too many. Sorry for my bad writing. BTW great idea with the sander.

Have you figured out what to do with the dust blowing at you from that port?
@TinyLittleWorkshop
@TinyLittleWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
I actually did build a cyclone dust collector in another video. I'd have to construct some sort of shield/collector to be able to hook it up to this particular jig. Usually I've got doors open on opposite sides of the workshop and a large, high CFM fan blowing to try and keep small particulates in the air to a minimum when making sawdust.

Well we all know that the jigsaw the jig. Jig-saw. I expect I needed to pop that in there for anyone who doesn't get it. There has to be a better one than that one. Come on people, put your thinking caps on.

Belt sanders are fairly inexpensive new, $40 and up. I got mine at an auction for $4. Other places to look for second-hand ones are garage sales and thrift stores.

Quick and easy belt sander jig but he says "This cost me a few hours of work." nothing about this project looked quick or easy other than "slathering on some wood glue." To the novice woodworker, this is more like brain surgery while piloting a rocket in space. good video otherwise.
