I have been inclined to throw things out when there is a mistake but I’ll try to change my mindset to refer to them as a happy accident! Oh dear! See them not as mistakes but challenges (or collage fodder!) How can it be saved? 99% of things can be saved by adding a few things here and there, if possible, taking a few things out--certainly they can become parts for something else when you tear 'em up--lol. Perhaps start a project of just cast-offs (like the Island of Broken Toys in Rudolph). Some of the things I disliked the most at first end up being favorites (over time). Nothing's ever ruined forever/garbage 😉

I love this tutorial and it's perfect timing because I just purchased a bunch of fabrics from a thrift store with the intent to make book covers but didn't know how to go about it. You saved the day!!!! I have hoarded...I mean "collected" 😉 so many different boxes that I know would make perfect journals. I can't seem to throw them out when I imagine what I could make from them!!! Lol! I look at packaging soooo differently now! As always I love your video. Your idea is wonderful and it comes at just the right time for me. Like you I loved the problem-solving aspect of junk journaling. It was the part of being a watercolor artist I love the most to. I was blessed by a friend who gave me a box full of upholstery fabric which I did not have. I plan to make a number of Travelers notebooks to sell in a local shop for seniors. We have a number of tourists here and this is right in Old Town Albuquerque. I will make the journals in a way that they can record their travels and have places to keep their little bits and Bobs of receipts and brochures and business cards along with place to put pictures that they may take. Your taste in colors and color combinations is really exquisite.. I learn sooooo much from you. I’ve been making journals for myself and all the girls in the family and now I’m making a big one for my husband to store his art work .. he loves to paint as do I . I always use fabric , first because I have loads of it and second because it’s quite sturdy . What I do is use clips to hold the fabric properly over the cover.. run it through my sewing machine then I line it on the inside with a matching fabric ans sew everything again like a second inner stitching . I also add pockets on the lining before or after the sewing . I use decorative stitches so it looks intentional and artistic . I don’t know if I can add photos here as I would really love to show you😊 Thank you Natasha for being you and for all the help you are offering 🙏🏼you are absolutely wonderful 🌹💐🌹

😍oh wow...love them all but my favorite is the orange one with the pen pocket in the front. I just love your covers! NO, I don't throw them away but sometimes the glue has seeped through in an area that can't be camouflaged. I found I can now use the sheerest of fabrics with Fliselina or heatnbond. I iron it on to my fabric, peel and iron it on a high heat to a sheet of rice paper. Afterwards you can use any glue to attach it to your backing. I make ten at a time so they are always ready at hand. I hope that helps. Well, I think I need to give my old sewing machine a new job. If I can still find out how to thread the yarn🤷🏻‍♀️ 4 weeks ago I didn’t even know about scrapbooking, altered books, working with junk journals. But until today -due to sleepless nights- I have watched many (too many) of your (and others) videos. I like yours best because your voice and style of explaining and use of „normal“ stuff and making something beautiful out of it, is so refreshing and calming at the same time. I have „made“ an altered book of an old book I had lying around and I used what I had in the house. Not much actually, being an absolute beginner. Scissors, glue (stick) some stamps and stamping pads, some extra magazine pages and 2 very cheap (dollar tree-style paper collections with stickers and stuff) I have finished for today since tomorrow I am going to see if I can improve it and go out to buy some extra bits and pieces. As of now I am quite happy.

Hi Natasha, I have only started junk journaling in the last year but I am like Cheryl and get excited whenever you put up a new video. So much information and you just seem to get the jj juices flowing. I just made a journal for a friend and am just finishing up the embellishing. SO easy & CLEVER, as always. LOVE IT! :) Since you don't prefer to use 'gray interior' cereal boxes... here's an idea that you or someone else may like, so they don't go to waste. Besides being an Analog Collage Artist, I also do and LOOOOVE 'Gel Plate Printing' to use in some of my big collages, zines, and so forth. Those gray box interiors could be STUNNING after being gel-printed on, making sure to use only acryllic paint (no inks). Talk about a STUNNING embellishment, especially if you use some metallic acryllic paints on the gel plate. Incorporating stencils for specific designs and sometimes I use 2-4 layers of stenciling with various colors for abstract effects. Just an idea for y'all! LOL

Your favourite one is definitely mine too! Followed by that huge black one with reddish flowers on. And I really like the one you added braid trim to as well. I have a bespoke curtain shop near me. They have all those types of fabrics. You can just buy the fabrics if you want to, but that fabric is expensive!!! They get new fabrics in all the time, and they make mini curtain panels, roughly 1 metre squared, to hang in the window. No more than a week and they change out the window display, always new fabrics coming in, or maybe one of the sample panels in the window has all sold out on the fabric roll inside. They put all those 1metre² panels in a big basket, for £1 each! They are all lined with quality sheen cotton, may have either standard heading tape or ring top tape or tab tops sewn in. They are literally a proper professionally stitched curtain, hemmed, edged properly etc. I get loads of them! It can take me an hour to go through the basket in the shop! it's like one of those big display cages that are normally used for putting footballs in, in a sports shop! Huge! When I get them home and unpick them, iron out the hems and folds etc, they are over a metre² in size. And remember I'm getting the cotton linings as well as the outer textile fabrics! For £1 a curtain!!! 😲 Fabric or papers.... I can't help myself hoarding them! 😂 But I have a huge crafting cupboard so they're very tidy! 😁 I loved watching you make these, your sewing is perfect! I craft the same way you do... precision and neatness! I know some people like messy sewing and stray threads hanging but I hate that personally. If I make a mistake I generally fix it in the same way you do...but if it's a special gift for someone or something I'm making for my home and it doesn't look good enough imo, I will get upset at myself and throw it away! When I'm that invested in that special item, fixing it isn't an option because my brain still knows it's there! Then every time I look at it, it makes me depressed because I feel so disappointed and sloppy in my work, so then the whole thing is ruined in my mind. I may not throw it out that very minute, I may walk away from it, sleep on it, and look at it again the next day when I'm not upset at myself. Sometimes a fresh mind makes you realise it's not nearly as bad as it looked the night before through annoyed eyes! But if it still looks shite, in the bin it goes! No hesitation! I have enough stress and depression in my life as it is, I don't need items in every room taunting me with proof of my failure! I'm already trying to rebuild my self confidence after splitting up with my husband, following long term emotional abuse. I'm at home 95% of the time due to illness and disabilities anyway, so I have to get rid of anything around me with negative emotions or memories associated with it or I'll never feel like I have any worth. I want to feel proud when I look at something I've made, so every time it catches my eye it reminds me of doing an excellent job and that I do have valuable skills and creative talent. The lightbulb moment for me in this video, was the hair straighteners! I was like, ohhhhhhh myyyyyyy goddddddd!!! 😲😲😲 I literally got a new hair dryer and straighteners at Christmas, and have a spare pair of straighteners that I thought about either putting on Facebook marketplace or donating to charity! Now they're going straight in my craft cupboard instead! I'll put them with my heat tool and pyrography pen etc. They'll fit in that box perfectly!!! I bet you could use them on coffee dyed paper too, that's too wrinkly, or offcuts of paper that got bent up amongst the stash from rummaging through the scrap box! Amazing tip! I love discovering something new like that! I have a tip in return... Well a couple of tips around one subject actually: The gluing of card to fabric. 1) a) you can buy that stuff like interfacing, that's double sided, if you sandwiched that between the two and ironed the fabric, it would be stuck on tight and super smooth! b) You can even buy that wonder web stuff on a roll, used for hemming things, that's basically the same thing but on a thin roll. They sell that in our Poundland, and no doubt in most cheap shops that are similar! 2) a) gelli plate! Get your gellie plate and brayer and pour on your glue! The reason your glue is still seeping even though you smoothed it out, is because it hits the card in a squiggle pattern from the bottle, which is sitting on the surface for a minute or two longer than the final smeared bit, so it's soggier. The card beneath the squiggle pattern has absorbed more glue by then, so even though the GLUE surface is smooth on the top, the underside of the glue is slightly deeper in places where it's had time to soak in. If you apply the glue smoothly all over at once, that won't happen. b) If you don't have a gellie plate and brayer, use a decorating paint roller and plastic tub. I don't mean a giant wall paint roller, but one of the smaller fluffy ones for getting behind radiators. I use one and it's only 4" across and about as thick as a broom handle, so pretty small. I got mine from Poundland, and it came with spare roller sleeves, the handle, and a mini shallow paint tray! c) Failing that, a bowl of glue and a generous sized brush! Brush it all over, and don't rush. Work it back and forth all over repeatedly so the surface is evenly saturated. 3. Fraying or thinner fabrics. If you're worried about glue seepage on thinner fabrics, coming through in spots here and there, then make seepage part of the intention! Roller your glue back and forth on your fabric INSTEAD OF the card! That way the whole surface will automatically be evenly seeped. Obviously glue dries clear so you can't SEE it in that sense, but you can see the texture change of the fabric, where glue seepage has dried. So purposely roll the glue on the fabric instead, so the whole thing has that texture when dried. Works great for fabrics that fray easily too, as the glue, when dry, holds the fibres together when you trim round the edge so it won't fray. But of course, you'd have to let it dry before sewing as it will be a lot wetter than if you were gluing the card. Hope those tips help someone! 😘😘😘
