I always thought that skipping over Louis and heading straight to Bird is like skipping the first part of an epic novel. I played trumpet for years before listening to the Hot 5/7 recordings...an epiphany.

Thank you, I’m starting to improvise in my 60’s and just daunted with all the technicalities. I find I’m getting better by just playing and listening and not thinking and analysing.

Great video, Mark! I've subscribed, looking forward to more, and I'll spread the word and (hopefully!) help you get to 1,000 subs/4,000 hours/monetization sooner! Please let me know when you're playing a public gig or in the pit for any musical theater in the Nashville area. I'm typing as I'm listening to the vid for the first time, so I wanted to say "thanks" for that Clifford example to kick this vid off. He's my all-time favorite, and IMO, that solo is required vocab for sooooo many reasons! Your playing sounds fantastic as always, and I hope to see/hear you soon! All my best to you and the fam!

BTW... noticed your Ken Slone books, great books I still have and use. I was saddend to learn this weekend (from Jeff Jansky) that Ken passed away last year. I think Jeff played in a band in Louisville, run/fronted by Ken.
