Quick and Easy Watercolor Fish | Beginners Tutorial Painting Loose Wet in Wet PLUS Tracing Tips

Today I decided to skip the part where I struggle to choose what to paint, and go with the first idea that came to mind. The result is this cute golden fish nestled amongst the seaweeds, under the sparkling surface of the sea. The body and fins of a fish like this make an excellent subject for practising wet in wet blending, and (just like our #paintabirdaday birds) you could do endless variations on this theme, and every one would have its own unique character. I love this fish! I just found you today and I love your style. I am a very very basic beginner with watercolor so I have been looking around at different channels and that's how I found you. I am so much of a "whimsical" person when it comes to things I create that I simply know I'm going to learn a lot from you! I love your comment on copying also. I have been a "maker" of things for most of my life. Either sewing, painting (acrylic and furniture), basket weaving, jewelry making and such. It's always the easy way out to copy someone. But in doing so, you don't allow your own creativity and personality to show through in your work. As I delve into watercolors, I'm sure I'll use your paintings as inspiration for my beginnings before I branch out on my own and let my creativeness take over. Sounding like a broken record our heat and lack of rain is still here... without even a chance of relief in the forecast.. Love this fish! Ii just bought a light box last week! It was on my wish list and thought i might have to wait for Christmas but NO! lol I think the gold looks really nice Diane.. I love how gold can just elevate things.. You speak wisdom Diane about copying so never 'shut up'.. When i was a child i would try to copy to learn.. Ofcourse i was never satisfied with the results.. Now in my 50's i want to be more uniquely myself so often i will look at things and say to myself.. 'Now how can i make that my own?' in my own style... I often get wonderful results that i love.. I find i'am much easier on myself now than when i was younger.. Its a good feeling.. Alot of times i like my art way better than anyone else... as it should be in my opinion.. What a wonderful experiment. I love how you are willing to start a project you hope to turn into video without having it all planned out. I have been following botanical artists and learning from them how to make watercolor art look realistic. The ‘details’ of botanical painting are absolutely fascinating to me. I typically start with a personal project in mind and then search for someone that has created a tutorial for I want to achieve. I will follow the tutorial, then apply the techniques to my own photograph, or experience, that I am wanting to paint. In that sense, copying someone is a good thing. If I can learn from them to create my own painting down the road, I am all for copying. But I wanted to learn to ‘color outside of the lines’ as well. You have been so amazing in helping me in this journey. I am feasting on your videos and your style of painting. I painted a couple of your 1-minute bird tutorials and they turned out so cute! They were on scraps of paper for me. But then…. I had an opportunity to display my little birds in a setting where some children were having a ‘free art’ time. Several of the children copied what I did learned to draw birds from just this one little example. They were so CUTE! And the children were so happy with their drawings! Not exact copies of the original, but crazy cute. Thank you for your videos. You are impacting a lot of lives!

I'm so glad that youngsters are getting the opportunity to experience art first hand, and really hope and believe they will benefit from these chances their whole lives. I agree with you about the value of copying when it is what you describe, which is following instructions in order to learn! There's nothing wrong with that at all, and I still do it all the time - when I see a technique being used that I'm not familiar with or a design idea I will study what is being done and do my own version, thus moving forward with my own art. I think the copying that I am uncomfortable with is the sort which gives people a sense of inferiority because they can't exactly reproduce the original work. And then there's the sort where people pretend that their copy is their own original. But using someone's tutorial to learn is absolutely FINE!!!! Have fun and enjoy, and I look forward to your next comments!!!

This was such a fun thing to paint, thank you, Diane! As for copying, I'm a beginner, and I usually do copy the first time around, especially when I'm painting as I'm watching for the first time. Once I've done that, it gives me the confidence to do the next one more freely. Sometimes I opt to watch the entire way through first then give it a go, which does help me to feel more brave to use my own colors and doodles.

@@DianeAntoneStudio I see the point of view from both sides, for beginners to copy instructions and tutorials are some of the ways to learn these days, once you understand a media or the techniques you can take away from the tutorials and develop your skills and unique styles. To do this you have to practice make mistakes and repeat..and it is in this journey you discover your own style. When I was in high school, art lessons homework was very much like yours, I remember being told to "draw from the view of an ant". We really had to use our own imagination there. This was 1984, no Google, no KZbin, no Instagram. Straight from your imagination. I could copy someone's piece work now and makea goodreplicaofit , but I wouldn't know the journey of how this painting arrive to be. I wouldn't know the reason behind a mistake or maybe the artist changed their mind half way through. But all that I'm copying is the finished product. It's meaningless to me. It's hard to explain 😅

I'd like to comment on your plea to not copy, and to take the liberty to disagree a bit. I want to get to the point where I am creating my own works, but as a beginner, I am finding that copying other's work, including yours Diane, is helping me to find my own personal style. Copying also allows me to explore different techniques and styles and still end up with something I like and enjoyed doing. I agree that if you copy and then aren't happy, you are missing the point of doing art. But if you copy and that moves you to a place of your own, and teaches you something along the way, then I believe it is a very useful and wonderful tool. I am so grateful that so many artists show us how to create art on KZbin, and I am confident that copying many styles is leading me to find my own way. And really, if copying brings you joy-even if it doesn't move you to create your own art, isn't that wonderful? I don't think copying itself is the problem. I think it is that critical inner voice that says you aren't good enough or your art isn't good enough is really the culprit here. I Know your comments are kindly meant, but I hope they don't discourage anyone from finding their own path. And I hope you know that my comment is kindly meant also.

Hi Penny and thanks so much for your lovely long comment. I listened again to what I'd said on this video and I know that I didn't really make my point clearly, and I think that was because I was concentrating on the painting! I probably should have edited it out or kept my lips zipped! It's such a big and complicated subject. The points you make are good ones and I agree with what you say. But let me try to explain what I meant. First, I have nothing against people following tutorials, using tracings of my sketches, painting the way I do, all in the name of learning. That's totally fine. I did a lot of copying myself when I first started in watercolor, and in fact continued to do it for years. Actually I regret that slightly now, as I think this inhibited my development artistically, and is the reason why you will hear me saying in some of my videos that I cannot in good conscience call myself An Artist. I didn't have access to a good teacher or art classes when I was learning, so felt I had to make do with copying what I found in books or videos. What I should have done, of course, was sit outside or in front of a still life and learn from trying. Of course, KZbin did not exist at that time, and neither was there the absolutely limitless source of other people's ideas to refer to when trying to learn how to paint. There's a positive and a negative side to that. The negative is that if you look at other people's work you might feel overwhelmed with choice, outdone in terms of skill and imagination, and thoroughly bogged down with so very much being out there. This could easily lead to painter's block, or slow down the development of your own style. Again, I'll share my own story. Learning as I did from copying other people's styles, I found myself totally inhibited because I could never properly reproduce what they had done. My effort, even if quite close, was always "less" than the original. I was always striving to get ever closer to what someone else had done. That might have been the way for the students of the great artists of the past, but that's not what we do now. We are expressing our own inner truths and giving ourselves permission to be real, not aiming for a goal of perfection. So you are right in that regard too. But the important thing, which I didn't say in the video, is that your copy be your painting, and that you don't feel that you fall short of any imaginary goal. At the end of the day it's up to each of us to do what we want to do in the way we want to do it. When I click on Pinterest and see two hundred versions of the same painting, I know that those who painted those copies could be creating so much more with the skills they have learnt, or even without any skill at all. You know, here's the third thing about my own journey. I started to paint at school in art lessons, which I loved. In those art lessons, and in those days, we were given absolutely NO instruction whatsoever. We were handed a brush or two, a set of poster paints and a piece of sugar paper. And told "paint a picture of washing the dog." I remember that clearly, from 1964 in our first art class aged 11 years. No picture to work from, no guidance from the teacher, no help at all. Paint a picture of washing the dog! I had never even touched a dog at that point in time. Yet I wasn't put off of art and I persisted. Basically we were being asked to paint what was inside of us. A very hard road to hoe. When I came back to try to teach myself watercolor many years later, I took the other way and as I said, learnt by copying, which I now regret somewhat. Now, though, as I am able to share what I did eventually learn, I am finally so happy to be able to help other people learn more easily than I did. So, to close, I really appreciate your comments Penny, and look forward always to seeing all your work, whether copies or originals and I hope that maybe I've managed to explain what I was trying to say a bit better than I did in the video. Coincidentally, I was going to tackle the seahorse tutorial today! I will have to watch this one this evening and then I can have a "companion piece" to go along with it! The seahorse with its white and silver shimmers and this with the gold shimmers! I'm a beach/ocean soul and anything to do with the ocean makes me happy. I love t his fish! I don't see the sketch yet, but I'll be keeping my eye out ... or maybe do it making my own sketch. I'm on vacation next week and it's going to be hot. We're planning lots of beach days. Maybe I'll bring my paints along and actually paint while at the ocean. I took them last week, but there were too many people around and I felt self-conscious. About 10 days ago I took a fall. I was carrying a 40lb bag of cat food over my shoulder and I twisted my ankle. I think the extra weight of the cat food threw me off balance and down I went. I sprained my right hand/thumb and my arm and shoulder are sore and cut up my right knee :( I haven't been able to hold a brush or anything really in my right hand without pain.

I'm doing the sketch as we speak! It'll be up later today! Oh, so sorry to hear that Renee. I do hope you get better soon. Why do we do these things? I had two slight falls last winter, once my golden retriever crashed into me and sent me flying and the second time I slipped on some mud. I was unbelievably lucky both times and wasn't hurt. I know what you mean about feeling self conscious. What about getting one of those little beach tent things and hiding yourself inside? When you copy it’s not an original work and you’re supposed to give credit to the other persons art I forgot how that’s worded but I did one painting years ago and on the back my teacher had me give the other artist credit.
