Have you ever heard about leaving the backstrap in place and trimming between it and the hinge. It lets you get away with a much thinner hinge and a smaller chance of barber chairing on you. I was half expecting you to use the trees to do the house demo.

Absolutely, actually did just that on the walnut in this video, just had a bit too thick of a hinge though.

My go to training folks say 10% of diameter for hinge thickness and 90% of diameter for hinge width. Obviously rules of thumb for sound wood. Just throwing it out there because when I do the math that’s less hinge than my eye wants to leave 😂 be well
@troytreeguy6 жыл бұрын
Oops! I meant 80% of diameter for hinge width!

Any wood wood workers in the area. Black walnut can cost one big money.
@northmanlogging27696 жыл бұрын
but but bore cutting is supposed to prevent chairing (said every game of logging hack ever) it dont its slow, and is only partially helpful to prevent chairing. If you can it would be cool to see that chair tree all as one video.
@Human13376 жыл бұрын
It is, back a year or so ago.
@northmanlogging27696 жыл бұрын
hinge wood is only one factor in controlling a chair. face depth, cleanliness, wood condition, stem weight all play important factors, any one of them can cause a chair, bore cutting minimizes the danger, but is not the cure all touted by GOL/swedish stump dance aficionados.
@scotttree16 жыл бұрын
Hinge wood needs to be 10% the dbh maximum thickness thicker hinge can’t flex causing a chair even thinner ondead standing solid wood
@scotttree16 жыл бұрын
Also dutchman will cause a chair
@northmanlogging27696 жыл бұрын
Scott Peterson don't set hard and fast rules like 10% hinge wood, every tree us different, 10% is a good rule of thumb, but by no means is it maximum or minimum, also my original reply was to someone that has since deleted their post

@chrisspencer65026 жыл бұрын
Dumb question but, what happens to the wood from these big trees? Do you send it for milling? Or does it get mulched
@Human13376 жыл бұрын
The black walnut logs will go to our yard and put in with other logs of value which a buyer checks occasionally. All else goes into mulch making.
