I've been writing a lot since the begining of quarantine and I've also been inspired by Mark Holcomb's style as well as other guitarists such as Tim Henson, Mario Camarena, Ollie Steele, Tosin Abasi, Manuel Gardner Fernandez, etc. This video was really helpful and I appreciate the lesson a lot. Consider me a new subscriber.

This is very interesting, I really like writing riffs myself just sitting down and experiment I actually hate learning pieces that already exist and I kinda force myself to do that but most of the time I’m just coming up with my own stuff but a lot of the times I do not like what I hear, I think this is really going to help me and I’m going to have a lot of fun with this as well, thanks

Awesome Micko! I play in a progressive melodic/dissonant death metal band and I was stucked, wanted to create some bridges and so but I wasn’t able to, so this is not really my style but to listen to different things like this usually helps you a lot and actually it did! So thank you man! Greetings from Germany!

True stuff bro, just watched your video to confirm what I hear in all progmetal songs, it’s not really different chord progressions from what we already know, but there’s just a different groove to the progressive style.

I'm so glad I saw this. You saying around step 1 that I should think of the groove first shows that i dont need the fancy stuff to get *the sound*. I think my main problem is that I'm *heavily influenced* by early 2000s/2010s chugging style music. think Stick Stickly of Attack Attack. my grooves sound sooo metalcore.

I always have trouble with connecting chords via individual notes. That has always been my personal problem. But on that same note, you're right, you need to hear it in your head first and then pick it out. When I can't connect chords via individual notes, I have this bad habit of letting my fingers do what they want instead of what I imagine I want. The fingers just play whatever and it never sounds good. Gotta make your fingers pick out what's in your mind. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the video!
