My dad bought a 9" model A brand new with all the bells, and whistles in 1956. I was 3 years old at the time. I learned to run that lathe long before I was old enough to shave. Dad had a real nice shop in his basement. It was a money maker for him not a hobby shop. I bought a 1948 model A for my hobby shop 20 years ago, along with a 1948 M head Bridgeport. The lathe had been rode hard, and put away wet. I used the Bridgeport to rebuild the gearbox on the lathe. Today they both operate satisfactory for me. A testament to the resiliency of American Iron. Dads shop had to be liquidated after he passed as I had no room for it. I would have liked his model "0" Moore Jig borer, the first model built. I could sit in a roller chair, and run it. Thanks for the video Lyle.

@@mrpete222 Hi Mr. PETE. I sure wish I had you as a shop teacher. I was watching your old video set on foundry, and mixing up the silica sand with water glass. Question for you. Could one use the stuff that you pour into your radiator antifreeze to help repair a head gasket on an engine as it has sodium silicate as the ingredient?? Wonder if it would work? I remember taking some metal/ foundry pattern stuff in grade 8 and I'm now 58years young and can't even remember what sand/ mixture one had to use for the mold? Help please :) Awesome stuff sir you are 1 amazing gentlemen such knowledge, wow

My first experience was on a lathe like this, with straps. To change the speed, the lathe brand was Norton, then the first lathe with a semi-automatic gearbox, the name Norton box remained.Every time I see the tubalcain programs, I am delighted to remember. I have always liked inventing, my mind is always evolving, in my house I repair everything, my children and grandchildren, when something breaks, they tell their mothers, don't throw it away, grandpa, or dad, repairs it.

I have the south bend 10 with a 4' bed. Picked it up for $300 it was very well maintained the previous owner was using it to make motorcycle parts. I've gotten pretty good at using it just playing around with it. I've made a few things we needed on the farm abd a bunch of things we didn't haha! There's something fascinating about metal. Welding, cutting, machining it's so fun to work with.

Good refresher for me. I also like the flat belt on the smaller lathes like my Logan. It allows slip like the South Bend clutch to keep the crashes to an ego bruiser, not necessarily a lathe killer. I've tried to hog too much a few times and had the belt slip keep me from messing up too bad. The Sheldon and Clausing have the power to do what the idiot running them tells them to, even if it's destructive. Thanks for the class, Professor Pete!!! Keep warm up there.

That lathe with the quick change gears looks like what we had in high school shop in 1966. With one teacher and 20 to 30 guys in a 45 minute class, I didn’t learn much, but I didn’t break any thing or hurt myself. Now with KZbin, there is plenty of info available. Sure love your videos. Very informative. I’m a retired master mechanic with a small machine shop at home. I’ve built a number of your projects my favorite of which is the float-lock vise. I enjoyed this particular video because it speaks to me about the South Bend QCGB. I have a peculiar issue with my gear train that operates the QCGB. The two reversing gears being driven by the headstock gear are different diameters. Now, i want to try my hand at some left hand threading. I would have to run the carriage in reverse to accomplish this. Wouldn’t the pitch be off? I have a 13” X 36” cat#8113C South Bend lathe.

@stxrynn
@stxrynn Жыл бұрын
I think those old lathes used carbon steel tooling. That was before high speed steel. That and the diameters you can turn don't need very high speed. Check out the antique section of practical machinist blog. There is a wealth of info in there. There was a guy from Houston that was a reference book on old iron like that. Search around, they have probably answered any question you have twice over.

@mrpete222
@mrpete222 Жыл бұрын
The Buick straight eight has overhead valves. They always advertised it as valve in head. I really loved that 1951 Buick that I owned in junior college. The Packard was a flat head, probably a much older design. Have a merry Christmas Brian. It is one below zero right now.

In the extra credit at time 13:03 you show a picture of the gears internal to the quick change gear box. There are gears that are on the handle pivot shaft. What are they for? Merry Christmas Mr. Pete.
@stxrynn
@stxrynn Жыл бұрын
The handle pivot shaft is the same as a counter shaft in a transmission. Power comes in via the gear train on the upper right, into the big gears on the stub shaft, top right (A-E). Down through the counter shaft or pivot shaft, up through the smaller gears on the left (1-8), and out to the lead screw via the stub on the upper left. Does that make sense?? Hopefully it isn't too muddy of an explanation.

In reference to the extra credit. Mine doesn't have a knob but a lever. On my South bend I've tried threading with the clutch but it only moves the lead screw at a fraction of the speed of the half nut. I guess it's not supposed to do that? With the lever i can only move it so far. Do you know of a way to take up the slack behind the apron so i can fully engage it?
