Now I see you dabble in electricity. I have this Reliance 10 circuit transfer switch and it is great. I started with the 6 circuit switch box when I had a 5500 W generator. One leg of the generator stopped working so I upgraded to a Cat 8500 W generator on the 6 circuit switch box. I saw that the capacity I was using was low and decided to upgrade to the 10 circuit box. I added two electric baseboard heaters and two AC units. This enabled me to power all circuits in summer or winter. I tested usage with the heaters then with the AC units. In both situations I used less than 75% of the generator's capacity. Our generator is electric start so that and the Reliance switch box make it easy for my wife can start the system if I am not home. I too like for everything to be neat and tidy. With that in mind, I ran wiring directly from the generator underground (conduit), through concrete block wall, and connected to the switch box. Then I ran a line from the box connection to 3 lights in the basement where the switch box is located. So when I start the generator the area where the box is located is well lit. The meters on the Reliance box makes it easy to plan your load balance between the two legs of the generator. In a power outage we have everything available except the water heater and clothes dryer.

Very nice and informational video. Some info. was incorrect, but others have already mentioned those things, so I won't. Those that have the Interlock Switch fail to realize the importance of a Manual Transfer Switch. The key features of the Manual Transfer Switch that an Interlock Switch can't do are: 1) Two different power sources being able to safely come into your Control Panel at the same time. (grid, battery, solar and generator power) 2) You can choose some or all circuits, in the Transfer Switch, to be on an alternate power source to save money on your electric bill. (Solar and battery power) 3) Less steps to switch between power sources. We have The Pro Tran 2 six and ten circuit Manual Transfer Switch. (Love them) We have the Ecoflow DP power station and battery. Also, a Tri-fuel generator. The DP is already plugged into both transfer switches and ready to go in a grid down situation. When I install some solar panels, we will be able to have some circuits always on solar and battery power, while the other circuits are on grid power. (You can't do that with an Interlock switch)

The smaller box does not run just one side of the box, and with a interlock kit you can choose what yo turn on. So all the statements are not true.

If you install a dual pole breaker as your generator main, it will. land both hots to it. both legs will be energized. just don't turn on any 240 appliances. Could get damaged. Way cheaper option than trans switch, but not great for long term.

@Bob-cx4ze

Pros and cons to both, but not more versatile if you need to run more than 10 circuits. An interlock solves the problem unless you need to feed different circuits from different sources simultaneously. Long term, having something that allows renewable power to SUPPLEMENT grid seems like the smartest way to go.

I use a 6 space Square D QO panel for my solar transfer. Using the piggyback breakers gives me 12 circuits. Then each circuit goes through an 80A DP relay, with one side to the grid and the other side to my solar inverters. A 6 switch panel allows me to select which household circuits may be on solar, although lately, I just leave them all on. This design allows for automatic grid backup of the whole house. The charge controller controls when the transfers will happen.

Seems to me a double pole double throw mechanical switch will do the job. Switch line voltage to the panel, flip the switch and send generator to the panel. No leakage, no new circuit breakers, no limited circuits other than what the generator can drive. No $500 price tag. To me, these things are a waste of money. But then I grew up in a time when my grandfather put a penny behind a blown fuse. Seriously though, what advantage does this have over a simple mechanical two way switch?

In the summer I can continue to run circuits from my battery when solar is abundant. I can basically select appropriate circuits to run for free depending on current sun conditions. For 1/4 of the year that's pretty much the whole panel running off solar.

To be fair, a transfer switch does prevent any back-feeding into the main and is a safer option long term. Old Main breakers can often not break completely allowing some current to flow back through the lines. The down side of a TS is limited circuits. At least this one gives you 10. But the best price found is around $450, without the genny cord

Wrong...the inlet box can run both sides of your panel and then you can just turn on what breakers you wish to be powered. That does the same function as the box you just installed, making that transfer switch box not necessary. Thanks for the video though.

You totally skipped the last wiring part. On the outlet that gets wired into the switch box. The letters are "X,Y,G&W". Presumably for Yellow, Green, White and who knows what X is supposed to be. However, there are only 3 wires and they are (as a universal constant!) Red, Black and Green. So, for those of us who spell Black with a B and Red with an R which goes where?!

(240V) the X,Y = red or black they're interchangeable, G= green, W= white. And if you are 120 volt three wire only connection X or Y would represent line(hot)voltage and W & G to the white and green But usually be the standard connection.
