TLDR.... use scotch tape.
A few weeks ago I nearly lost my Cobber Rear Light to a series of root clusters under the road. Its never happened before, but I figure a little insurance on necessary instrument is nearly always a good thing.
1. Move the Light to the top of the post under the Rear Reflector post mount. (If you do not have a reflector, then move the Cobber to the top of the bar just under the Seat Supports so it may be visible to the approaching motorist)
2. Packing tape of any Varity will do (As long as it is Clear). Just cut a piece about 5-7 inches so that it doubles back on itself like an Ouroboros
The tape is reasonably inexpensive and the material will really stand up to a beating (mud and road grime).
If you wanted to go a step future you could cover the whole thing to act as a shield for the lens.
