This is the way I agility train my male Multimammate Mice ( = "African Soft-Furred Rats").
When they heard another mouse being clicker trained, they would get aggressive and attack him. That's why for them I prefer luring, it doesn't upset the others so much.
But of course this simple method also works for other species.

Hi! Are you getting just one multi? They cannot live alone and need large groups of at least 5 individuals. So please consider getting more than just one! It's much more fun to watch them cuddle and groom each other instead of a sad and lonely one. :-)

A good way to teach a mouse to go through the tube is to get a spoon or stick and put a treat on it, and then lure them through the tube to the otherside

Yes, this species has extremely powerful jaws and sharp teeth, their bites can be quite harmful. But in this case it was just a nip. Most of my mice are self-bred and some are from the animal sanctuary.
@MouseAgility
@MouseAgility 11 жыл бұрын
Hi! First you should find out if your mouse is stressed (refusing treats is often a sign of it). E.g., being cut off from his home cage (and from his companions, in case he has some) can be very stressful for a mouse. And being easily distracted is totally normal for them. When they are new to training, some of mine can only focus for a few seconds! So you should be patient and keep the training sessions very short. But it's usually easier to train them inside their cage, have you tried this?

It totally depends on what you expect from your pets. Rats bond with you and enjoy being petted, mice are pets to observe rather than handle and are much harder to tame. Both species can't really be potty-trained and both have a smell. And both species must live in groups. A difference is that male rats can live together and male mice must be neutered, otherwise they would kill each other. And keeping them alone is no option.

Hi! Thanks for your video! :-) Good to see that your mouse already trusts you enough to take treats. But your cage is already too small for one mouse and she should get some companions, so you need a much bigger one. I already sent you a site some time ago where you can see how a mouse cage should look like and how to build one. Please take a look at it again.

I have a wild house mouse that I found when he was possibly 3-4 weeks old. He was very curious and I taught him to eat from my hand and also to lick peanut butter from my fingers. He's getting really comfortable about hands now. It took a while for him to trust but now he comes when I call him and loves to visit me.
@dancepiglover
@dancepiglover 4 ай бұрын
I know this is a 10 year old post, but for future reference, peanut butter can pose a choking hazard for small animals because it is so sticky. They love it, but it’s risky. Some will water down peanut butter to make it a thinner consistency.

Hi! :-)
@MouseAgility

Absolutely nothing can replace companions for such highly social animals. Just google for isolation stress in mice, it has lots of negative effects. For fancy mice, the minimum group size for females and neutered males is 4 individuals, 5 for multimammate mice (the ones in this video) and gerbils should only be kept in pairs because larger groups tend to be unstable. So if you want to get just one rodent, a solitary one like a hamster would be the better choice.

Hm... so the males get aggressive when you click? I'm hoping to start training my ASFs, soon. if only for additional stimulation, for them, since they're so clever and easily bored. How long does it take before they'll begin to take a treat from your hand? I've only had them a couple weeks, so I'm not expecting much-- though they will take a toy from me. :)
