Mine just came.. with my silencers, so looking forward to a lifetime of playing (lol, I am 65) in the woods and Hills of my Montana home and beyond. I have the older Mountain ones, so looking forward to playing this as well.

Brilliant! Your embouchure is your octave key, like on a concert flute. Thank you for pricing it well. I have to wait until the first of the year to get one though. Happy holidays!

Hi, Nalomeli, I thought I should clarify because it works a bit differently than you have described. Coda EDC Flute has two sound chambers but one set of toneholes. To play the lower range of notes, you blow into the left side of the mouthpiece. To play the upper range of notes, you blow into the right side. (There are four overlapping notes in the middle that you can play on either sound chamber, whichever is easiest and most fluid, depending on the music.) This takes a little getting used to, but it becomes very natural with time. One cool thing about not depending on embouchure and blowing pressure to change octaves is that you can do things like blowing softly in the upper octave without accidentally dropping into the lower octave, or blow more forcefully on the lower chamber without accidentally jumping into the upper octave. With practice, this allows you to be very expressive with the instrument, to "speak" with it.

Does this use Ocarina Fingering patterns? Are there subholes?

Hi Carl! I own your Celtic Tunes book too and it has great songs in it. As for this new ocarina although I could have some use for the upper octave (for a high note needed here or there) the sound of the lower octave and the fingering have sold me on this ocarina! This may sound cruel after all you have been through bringing this beautiful creation into the Universe but would it be possible to scale up the size of this ocarina on the computer so that the lower octave becomes the upper octave and a deeper, lower octave becomes available? It wouldn't be truly portable anymore but I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Or if you could scale up your original ocarina to turn it into a bass ocarina I'd be thrilled with that too. I really want a deep sound and to get that deep sound with your fingering system would be the apogee of genius. I believe that there are a lot of former ocarina enthusiasts out there who stopped playing because they got tired of what began to seem like a shrill sound. You could bring all of us back. I will still buy this ocarina because it is a thing of beauty and I really want to try out it's smart fingering, I might just have fun! Every grade-school in the country should know about this product because it's the best musical instrument you could put in any young person's hands, woodwind-wise, and at an affordable price too. You've been through a lot Carl. Please know that you've done well. Best wishes, John. My ocarinas: STL Compact Double and STL 6-Hole Plastic Soprano.

So if you don't do any half covering of holes for sharps & flats, what are the divisions for in the holes, reinforcement? I think the idea of your Coda is brilliant and it sounds beautiful. Can you still get the same sound as someone wavering the middle part of their finger over a tin whistle? I have the G ocarina, your wonderful Celtic tunes book, and I am now teaching myself how to play by ear. But I'd like to know more about the flourishes in that kind of music and whether it is fully achievable on the Coda. Also- the straight lines on the back of the Coda, reinforcement too or does it have to do with hooking it onto your belt? Does the hook come with with Coda? Thank you so much & congratulations on the release of your new product!

Great questions, Laura. This is a little tough to describe clearly in words, but after you read my explanation here, I think the video will make more sense when you watch it the next time. There is only one set of toneholes, but the toneholes are bisected. Even though the toneholes are bisected, you treat them like a single hole. Yes, you can make all the ornaments used in traditional Irish dance tunes. For instance, you can perform a roll (i.e., a cut and a tap) on all notes except the lowest C and the highest C, including the sharps and flats, over Coda's two octave range. And the rolls are actually easier to perform in most cases than on an Irish flute or whistle because you have many more toneholes that provide solid cuts and taps. (I don't expect that last explanation to make a lot of sense, but -- with time -- I'll be creating videos on the Coda EDC forum to explain these techniques.) Oh, and the lines on Coda's back keep him strong and light. Finally, for now, the Coda clip is included free of charge with Coda. It is "permanent" but can be removed if you wish. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the clip. It's a game changer because it allows me to leave Coda clipped to my front pants pocket most of the time.

What about playing both octaves at the same time?
@karlahrens
@karlahrens 2 жыл бұрын
You can play both octaves together in unison (not harmony). However, playing both chambers at once only works well on one octave songs in the key of C. It is an interesting affect and sometimes sounds quite nice, but it's more of a novelty bonus use of the instrument rather than a reason to buy it. --Karl Ahrens of Coda EDC Flutes
