Looks like a fabulous kit, Jen. The three built up ones I saw at Telford looked damned fine to me. A copy of that fine book was on Amazon for £185 - eek!! I believe if a pilot left his 'plane parked with the flaps down, he had to buy a round of drinks for the ground crew who had to crank them back up by hand.

Wow, well done Airfix, nice to see a good representation of the cockpit Sutton Harness passing through the seat armour and secured to the rear fuselage frame by steel wire. I had better start saving up! Thanks for the video, looking forward to the build.

I have been in communication with Paul Monforton the past three days. I purchased the PDF version of his reference book $27.50 CND. He informed me the hardcover is available for $85.00 CND Please make people aware that they can order from 'Monforton Press', in your upcoming video(s) if you think it would be helpful. I will be building my two kits soon. They are due Monday. Also thank you Jen for your 1/48 Revell SR-71 review. I bought one, finished sanding the outer surfaces. Will be adding rivet and stressed skin effects. Led for the exhaust with the model finished in metallic coatings, not black. Posed in flight on a custom stand.

I have two boxed 32nd scale Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX's - a third one built - and I thought that was the pinnacle. How wrong I was! Looking forward to the build. Plumbing that big engine should be fun.

Hoping this builds up fine. I'm a 1/72er but I've been really interested in this since it was announced. I'm actually quite interested in a Mk.XII conversion and, considering the break at the firewall, this would be relatively easy to accomplish.

I really like the marking option for Johnny Plagis. Would be a lovely tribute to one of the true Spitfire Brethren, heavily involved in defending Malta in it's darkest hour..

Just found your channel today (via a link on Large Scale Planes), and very impressed with your video, thank you. The Monforton book is indeed excellent and if anyone is looking at doing additional detailing in this scale (where there is no room to hide) it will be invaluable. Not sure I agree with you on Airfix clear parts though! They have an awful reputation if one steps outside of the UK Airfix fanboy zone :) and the clear parts on their Typhoon (which I have) were legendary in their inability to not get them right. I liked the comparison to Tamiya's 1/32 kit - that will be a tough one to beat, but it is only a little more expensive for a lot more kit (Tamiya has been available new on ebay for sub £90 for a long time now if you can pick your moments). I would have liked some more close ups of the plastic - worrying to hear the "typical Airfix texture" - and whether they have gone for overlapped panels at all (apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it). Pics of the exhausts I have seen look a bit basic but I am confident aftermarket will kick in if needed there. As an aside if you want to expand your modelling horizons in terms of techniques, check out Scale Modellers Critique Group on Facebook - no connection beyond being a member, but it certainly opened my eyes to new stuff. Anyway, thanks again for the review - I know they take a lot of time to put together (I used to review for Large Scale Modeller back in the day). Kind regards, Nick

Thanks for the wonderfully thorough review Jen. This does indeed look like a fantastic kit and after slowly super detailing the old 1/24 Mk 1a for years now, it's going to be refreshing to have most of what I need already in the box. I guess though that we'll be seeing many goodies from the likes of Airscale, Eduard, Aires etc appear for this kit. Hopefully, we'll also get to see a late IXe, VIII, XVIe and praying to the modelling gods, a Mk XIV, but plenty here to keep me busy in the meantime. Only problem I foresee is deciding on a colour scheme. That's going to be a tricky one.

@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft Like to think I contributed to Airfix's decision. I think I'll start scratch building a 1/24 P-51B next and hope that works too! Yes! I still love the old Airfix Spitfire Mk 1a, as well as the Bf-109E. And as lovely as the new Mk IX artwork is, I still absolutely love the original Roy Cross Superkit artwork. Those kits make great canvasses to add a little or as much extra detail as you want and still build into fine looking models despite their age. I've really enjoyed my build so far. I just need to finish the ruddy thing! 🙂

the kit is being made in the UK all of the toll in was done in the UK and all of the injection moulding all done in the UK I think the papers just so they can get it out quickly Airfix put a statement out at the kit will be made in smaller numbers

I think Airfix should have molded some of the truss structures in 3D like Tamiya did with its recent F35. It would take some additional investment, that could boost Airfix’s profile. Until then Tamiya and Bandai rules. This kit is for professional builders. There are a few hundred out there who will attempt this stunt.

@@paultaylor7287 Let me know how it works. I really wanted to buy this kit, until I saw those engine mount rods. There are just way too many to align freely in space, at the right angles. 3D jigs would have helped-as in the Airfix Blenheim kit.

@@paultaylor7287 Around 35:22, step 117 on, a 3D framework has to be assembled around the engine. (Probably the number one selling point of this kit, that would be awe-inspiring when displayed.) Very tedious stuff, given the plastic is soft. That stuff scares me. In order to achieve a confident structure, one would have to ditch that plastic, and scratch build from brass rods.

I remember when I started into modelling in the mid 1970s. One of my first kits was a 1/72 Spitfire. I can't remember the brand nor the Mk., but I do remember very well that I - at the age of 10 - fell in love with that aircraft's shapes, especially the wings. Now I see that beautiful kit in your video and I want this kit so badly! I'll just have to find out if there's enough space for it in my man cave. Thanks a lot for sharing. :)

I think at the model showcase at the factory the designer said there is a small clearance issue with the gun panels. IIRC he thought it might be possible to remove some material from the underside of the panel.

A Griffen engine vision of the Spitfire in 1/24 scale would be nice in the future. The first 1/24 Spitfire in 1970 was £2.99, I brought one. Did Trumpeters bring out the 1/24 Spitfire?

It looks as if the actual moldings were done for Airfix by Academy in South Korea. The Sprue letter in a tab is typical of their recent kits, and their repops of kits such as the 1/48 Allison Mustangs originally by Accurate Miniatures.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tooling/moulds were actually done in South Korea. 'Designed and manufactured in the UK' doesn't mean that the moulds were made in the UK, it means that the plastic was injected there instead of India. I've got several airfix kits that have the same label, 1/48 Sea Hurricane & Tomahawk, 1/72 Swordfish etc. And the tooling for those were definitely done in China.

Airfix made a fairly big deal about the kit being produced in the UK, but I can't say I know if the moulds were made here. Due to the size, weight, complexity and relative fragility of tooling, however, I would be surprised if the tools were made elsewhere and shipped back here.

@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft Does any British company have the expertise and experience to make such complicated moulds? It's a very specialized field. All the previous 1/24 molds have been shipped from Asia without any problems, so why would this be any different. I think they wanted to inject the plastic in the UK so that that they were able to monitor the quality. As opposed to the Indian manufacturer sending them something that could inferior quality. From reading their blog and listening to the podcast I get the impression that they never actually visit the Indian plant.

Not really and super obvious ones, but they will become apparent in the build process and I will point them out. I did note that I don't think the Airfix kit is any better, but it isn't much less good in all fairness. And it isn't really a competitor either due to the scale difference.

On one of his recent reviews, I started counting how many times he said “right the way through”. It became tedious and I stopped counting at 18 or 19 times, I forget. It was nice to sit through your review and not hear it a single time 🙏🏼. P.S 1 : You are one of only a handful of people who recognized “Bindair” as “Been there” 😄. P.S 2 : In your review @ 27:31 you pronounced “Curieux” beautifully. The charm of your lovely British accent when pronouncing this French word made my heart skip a beat 🥰🥲. It's a warning or reminder that the control surfaces must be electrically bonded to the rest of the airframe. Bonding being an aviation term for earthing.

First timer. I enjoyed your style very much and whilst I guess you sit on the ‘fan girl’ side of Airfix your narration didn’t get gushy……..thank you. I bring this up as I watched an unboxing , not this model, and it became annoying. Euthanasia is fine however some control is welcome. I have both liked and subscribed and let’s see where that takes me!! Question: are you inflight or grounded preference? Me: very much in flight. You have a lot of knowledge both of models and real life product, did you serve or are you a flyer? Ahh you now show us your Spitfire book! Hi Bob, thanks for the message. I want to defend myself from the fan girl tag, because I'm not one - I just like what I like. I am very enthusiastic about Spitfires in general though and I expect that comes across. I like both, I enjoy making them inflight and using crew figures now and then. I am an aircraft technician (Heavy) in the RAF, and have recently started the journey towards a PPL, so it's a yes on both of those lol.

Good old AF, goes from one plastic bag for all sprues to no bag for some sprues with some paper! Why not put the wings in separate bags, or even each sprue in a bag! Some great new kits ruined by cheap plastic, bad moulding and as usual packaging, your vid did not some most of packaging.

I'm not sure if it's a full on benchmark. The Typhoon kit has a lot more to it, but then the Typhoon was a bit of a brute IRL wasn't it. I haven't built the Vulcan yet, I might do it on here when I do though.
