1. Difference between System Software and Application Software**:

- Application Software: Used for specific tasks like word processing, databases, and games.
2. Operating System (OS) Functions:
- Manages hardware resources, provides user interfaces (GUI/CLI), handles multitasking, and manages files and user accounts.
- Essential for running application software.
3. Important Terms:
- **Hardware, Firmware, and Operating System**: Essential for application operations.
- Interrupts: Signals that need immediate attention by the OS, can be hardware (e.g., printer issues) or software (e.g., application errors).
4. Programming Languages:
- High-level languages (e.g., Python, Pascal): Easier to write, debug, and maintain.
- Low-level languages (e.g., Assembly, Machine Code): Closer to hardware, more efficient but harder to write and understand.
5. Translators:
- Compiler: Converts high-level language to machine code, producing an executable file.
- Interpreter: Converts high-level language to machine code line by line during execution.
- Assembler: Converts assembly language to machine code.
6. Integrated Development Environment (IDE):
- Provides tools like code editor, translator, debugger, and auto-completion to facilitate programming.
7. Utility Programs:
- Virus checkers, defragmentation tools, backup software, and security software.
8. Human-Computer Interface (HCI):
- CLI: Faster, requires knowledge of commands.
-GU: User-friendly, uses icons and menus, but requires more resources.
9. Memory Management:
- Handled by the OS, involves managing RAM and virtual memory.
10. File Management:
- OS ensures proper access, organization, and security of files.
11. Device Drivers:
- Allow OS to communicate with hardware devices.
12. Interrupts:
- Manage priorities and ensure efficient processing.
13. Buffering:
- Temporary storage to manage speed differences between devices.
14. Security Management:
- User IDs and passwords to control access and ensure data privacy.
