Look at the plate, the glide path intercept was at the final approach fix JAKOR at 1600 That’s why the pink diamond wasn’t coming in at the IAF earlier on. The game wasn’t being finicky. It was dead accurate. Also, if you wanted to fly the approach correctly, you need to cross SILKY at or above 3000 MSL not 2700. Other than that, great video.

Thank you! I'm a real pilot but I remember when I played my first sim and I couldn't find any help that was simple and easy to understand! I'm here to make the sim world easy for everyone and hopefully spark some interest to become a real pilot! I still have no idea why I didn't intercept the GP from the start, but I was able to get back to it and I figured that I'd post it anyone to show how to fix it for anyone else who might have the same problem! If you have any thoughts on what you'd like to see next, please let me know! I do a lot of steaming and use VATSIM so might post a full length flight but in the meantime I'm looking for some more tutorials to post!

One thing to note is on the approach plate, when the altitude has a line under it such as 4000 at FLOZY, that's the minimum altitude you can be at that fix. For SILKY, you don't want to be lower than 3000 and so on. If the plate has 2 numbers on top of each other such as 8000 on top of 6000 with a line above 8000 and a line below 6000, that means you have to be between those 2 altitudes.

Normally, autopilots only like to capture the glide slope from below. Your initial approach altitude must be established as indicated on the approach plate for the IAF (initial approach fix). The initial approach fix will have you beneath the glide slope. I don’t know if it’s fully modeled correctly in MSFS, but RNAV approaches normally use the VNAV function, not the APR function.
@graytaylor353
@graytaylor353 3 жыл бұрын
A couple things: This is not a glideslope. This is a glidepath generated by the Garmin FMS. Big difference. The video maker flies it like an ILS approach (way below minimums with the autopilot on) but it is not the same thing. You are also wrong about the VNAV comment. Older planes without integrated approach navigation in their FMS may use VNAV, but nowadays many of them couple the APR function to the FMS glidepath.

@@DiggyPowell Ok, could you please explain in a video how VFR / VOR to VOR navigation works? When I fly a VOR route I only get turning points but no live ATC, I just arrive to the airport but no glidepath or something, no ATC to guide. When I play IFR there is everything I need (speed, flight level, atc). I just use the built-in departure/arrival options in the game, and when I choose VFR there are no other options like transition or something. So how could I generate a VFR flight path to have detailed arrival and like IFR? I hope you understand what is my question :)

A little buggy at launch, but overall a good experience. The systems they are trying to simulate are pretty complex in the real world, where they have dedicated resources just for that function (ILS, GPS, engine management, etc. all have their own dedicated processors and antennas on a real airplane) so trying to emulate all of those on a single resource source that isn't specifically made to do it is pretty impressive. Until they tune it up, though, it's a good time for novice pilots/simmers to learn how the procedures work by doing things manually and hands on before you just sit back and let the computer do it for you. It'll make you better in the long run when you have a better understanding of what is actually happening in front of you.

Yeah reviewing my charts you were to be at or above 4,000, 3,000 and then 1,600 because the plate has the line below the altitude. If the line was above that means at or below. @@cmdrsabre In case of an Rnav Approach, it's called the Glidepath, instead of Glideslope in ILS terms. Normally though, the GP should be shown as 'being too low' i.e the Diamond should be at the top. And as you get to your Initial fix, it should slowly come down and capute the GP. The AP normally tunes in the Altitudes automatically for the Rnav Approach (or in General you can put in altitudes in your Garmin3000 in this case and VNAV should follow those) but VNAV is broken/Inop at the moment :|

I found in XPlane, sometimes RNAV wouldn't kick in on GPath until the FAF. Depended on the airport, sometimes, as well, or quirks thereof. It would rarely be the fault of the plane if it didn't. And ILS sometimes engages a bit early, if done right, and you're not too high and too far out from final (or too wide of an angle). But performance can vary widely due to all sorts of factors, including how sound the nav. data you're using in whichever sim you're running, is.

This is nice when auto pilot works, lol, like 90% of my flights so far these past few days it doesn't, ether it goes straight north completely ignoring autopilot or keeps trying to send me across ocean when i load into the game. i finally realized that it seems to be when you select an arrival/departure on main menu with a GPS navigation that it messes AP all up. but if you just load into game from a parking space or whatever and not select any arrival destination,, then plug it into the system once you power on the aircraft it works just fine, haven't had it bug out once doing this method. I really hope that upcoming patch resolves the main menu setup messing up the AP in game.

I watched your ILS tutorial and followed along and got it to work. I tried RNAV with a random flight I was on with no destination, and could not get the glideslope to work. I'm pretty sure it was bugged. I made sure alt hold mode was off, everything was off except approach mode, autopilot, and yaw damper. I entered in the runway and rnav approach I wanted while in flight and it did fly the route correctly with approach mode as far as heading, but I couldn't get it to take control of the altitude. I pitched the attitude to get it to intercept the glideslope, but it just kept wanting to pitch up like it was on altitude hold mode or FLC mode. I double checked that those were off and eventually just had to turn autopilot off and land manually. It was a terrible landing, I landed like 3000-4000 feet from the start of the runway at KLAX. I had to brake because some guy pulled onto the runway in his 747 in front of me and I would have hit him otherwise.

Sounds like quite the mess and a good time to practice go arounds! Maybe I’m reading incorrectly but it’s sounds like you were trying to fight the auto pilot with the yoke. If you watched, I used vertical speed mode to get me down to a specific altitude and I held that altitude until it capture the glide path! You actually want alt hold mode on while your intercepting the GP/GS, assuming the slope is above your current altitude

So if RNAV works with glide slope as long as you leave it on GPS? Man, I've been mostly trying to find airports with ILS to capture the GS because I thought RNAV was just azimuth. So what's the difference between say ILS 7L and GS/Loc 7L?
@larrydingus2967
@larrydingus2967 4 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as GS/Loc approach (this would just be an ILS), you may be thinking of ILS/Loc approach which basically just means you can do an ILS approach or localizer approach (no vertical guidance). Usually a localizer is chosen over an ILS because the glide slope radio is broken. For RNAV there will be a glide path as long as it is an LPV (localizer performance with vertical guidance) or an LNAV/VNAV approach. You can see in the minimums on an approach plate if it has it. If you do an RNAV approach that is only LNAV then you will have no vertical guidance and have to manually calculate the descent rate (GS/2 and add a 0 is the rule of thumb). Also quick note, glide path is for RNAV and glide slope is for ILS (not significant but might as well mention it lol). Hope this helps and sorry for the essay!

@larrydingus2967
@larrydingus2967 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZorinInc the ILS system consists of a localizer signal and a glide slope signal (both the same frequency). A LOC approach is simply the ILS approach but without the glideslope (it may be broken or the plane may not have a glideslope receiver) so you only get lateral guidance and no vertical guidance. Both use the same radio, just one has a glideslope and one doesn't. Its separated because an ILS is a precision approach but a localizer approach is a non-precision appraoch.

The glide path doesn't get tuned on an RNAV. It's all GPS magic. I am also not sure why the GP was below you. When you went down to 1600 you caught it. I also didn't see APPR show up on the PFD anywhere near the HSI. IRL, the GPS goes into approach mode 2.0 NM from the FAF and APPR appears letting you know the sensitivity has increased.. If that doesn't happen, then you can't shoot the GPS approach. That's nothing you did, but I'm guessing that didn't get programmed into the sim.

@@DiggyPowell Yeh, Im pretty certain that the FAS starts inside the FAF i.e. the lateral and verticle guidance part of the APPR. Prior to the FAF you will decend normally, but can obviously use a 3 degree flight path angle, to get you to the FAF. The APPR will then take you down to the threshold. One way to be certain of this would be to fly at 3000' with the approach armed and then try it again at say 1000' and see what the outcome is. There are bugs in FS2020 that still need to be worked out, but creating your own procedures to over come the problem is not a responsible thing to do.
