THis was a great lesson. Other instructors wanted to teach the "second" hand position for doing the three corner chip which makes it harder to maintain the correct angle. I look forward to the second video from the Quick Start Chip Carving Series.

@@MyChipCarving Just a question, what kind of wood is used a these tutorials? I seem to see that it is a type of wood with an extremely compact but "soft" grain. Thank you in advance for your response
@MyChipCarving4 жыл бұрын
@@lucamarialanza7319 I'm carving both basswood (linden) and high density urethane (EZboard). Basswood is very tight grain and soft. Perfect! Northern grown is best!👍🏼

Excellent introduction! I'm a woodworker interested in embellishing my boxes with chip carving. This is one of the best intro videos I have seen. I love the idea of using high density polyurethane as a substrate. Allows you to focus on technique with having to deal with grain. Awesome idea!

Looks complicated sharpening. It's going to take a lot of practice to get the muscle memory down but very worth it. The video is great and to the point. No pun intended. I took a class on chip carving and just got a quick overview. Your video was much better in describing the cuts and technique to complete them in simplier terms. Thank you for your help.

Thanks for your reply. The Scary Sharp Sharpening process is harder to explain than it is to do. It's really quite easy and once you have the scary sharp edge maintaining it with a leather strop is even easier. I'm glad you learned a lot from this video!

Which wood are you using exactly? The cuts look extremely smooth. I always have the problem with lime wood that it is too fibrous. Maybe I've bought the wrong wood so far, as there are certainly differences between the same types of wood.

I would like to know how often you cut your fingers (specially in the beginning making carving)?😂... And would like to know as well if after long time this still happens with you. Thanks! 🎉

Hello, in the 37+ years I've been chip carving, I've never cut myself. Holding the knife properly and keeping your free hand out of the way results in safe carving. A sharp knife is critical too. More at mychipcarving.com

Can someone with shorter, stubby thumbs (shorter than average) still chip carve or would it be too difficult to form a proper angle for the knife?
@MyChipCarving3 жыл бұрын
Sure, anyone can learn to chip carve no matter hand size or shape. When you get your knife you'll make the needed adjustments to form a proper grip and angle. Give it a try! You can do it!!

I used to sell EZboard at ezcarving.com but I'm currently out of stock and looking for a buyer for this small business. EZboard is High Density Urethane. Finding it elsewhere is quite difficult in small sizes. that's why I started ezcarving.com. Sorry.
