Quick-thinking dog owner saves Jack Russell from choking

This is the moment a quick-thinking man saved his dog's life -- by performing the 'Heimlich manoeuvre' on the choking pet.
Electrician Joshua Aspey, 22, sprang into action when Jack Russell Sally choked on a piece of cheese and started to fit.
Former lifeguard Joshua used skills he learned for his poolside job and thumped Sally on the back and chest to dislodge the blocked food.
He saved his pooch's life and the whole thing was captured on a CCTV camera set up in the kitchen.
Joshua, from Watchet, Somerset, said: "I heard her paws scraping on the tiles so I turned around and saw her fitting.
“I just started to smack her on the back and shook her head up and down to try to bring it back up.
“I shook her head back and forth and the first piece came out. There were two lots of food in there.
“I put my fingers down her throat to get the second bit. Seeing your dog doing that is horrible. My dogs means the world to me.
“I grew up with them and they are all I have known. They are part of the family. I used to work as a lifeguard so have had the training on what to do if someone is choking.
“We were taught to thrust on someone’s chest or hit them across the back. She is a nightmare for scoffing food - it’s just what she does.
“It was just instinct but was definitely scary. I was panicking.”
Before he was an electrician Joshua was a lifeguard so knew exactly what to do to help the ten-year-old dog.
It happened after Joshua dished out small pieces of cheese to all three of his dogs - including border terrier, Mickey and Border Terrier cross Jack Russel, Daisy.
But “greedy” Sally ate too much cheese too quickly and began to choke on lumps of cheese.
Thankfully Sally recovered soon after being filmed on the ground by a CCTV camera in Josh’s parent’s house.

hi. I think this video helped me save my dog this morning. Very helpful to see this in action I’ve seen other helpful videos on how to help a dog that’s choking except it’s done and dogs were not joking and seeing it in action it’s a bit different it’s very startling to see how much convulsing and spasming there is but it’s helpful to know the possibilities, and the signs and what to do!

I was surprised by the convulsing too. It seemed so fast after that last bite of food, I almost wonder if the dog had his airway blocked from the prior bit of food then gobbled up that last piece on top of it. I would think it would take about 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes of no air before dropping over and convulsing. The dog did seem to have trouble with that prior bite but was continuing to eat anyway. What food was that anyway? It looked like bread dough or something else that was chewy or gummy.

I just saved my dog while choking . He’s only 5mths and swallows everything whole . He decided to swallow a huge piece of a trachea he was eating (and has been eating them fine since he was 2 months) but today for some reason he thought swallowing a massive piece would be just fine rather than continue chewing it Scariest thing I’ve ever been through.

I remember seeing this vid 6 months ago and yesterday, my dog started to act EXACTLY as this one did when he fell (flapping his limbs, shaking) and i remembered this vid and did all the same things. Same just happened to my chihuahua! I am trained in CPR/first aid, retraining every year for over 40 years and was able to disloge the cookie. It was scary to witness but glad I was able to intervene. Muscle memory is real!

My horror when I turned around on our walk today to see my dog gagging and falling to the ground. I've seen this video in the past not really remembering how exactly he has done it. I did remember the blows, so that's what I did and also put my finger in his mouth to scoop out piece of chicken he found in the grass. It came out still whole 🥴 He is back to normal now but my knees are still shaking. Thanks again for having life saving videos like this ❤

Not exactly the Heimlich Manoeuvre - which is composed of bunched fists and sharp inward thrusts under the rib cage - but it worked. This man just kept hitting the dog at the back of the neck so that whatever was caught in the throat would be expelled. Whatever it takes. Glad the dog is OK.

Wow such an amazing guy well done you saved your fur babies life well done we are so proud of you that poor baby was terrified and you just did what any good animal owner would do thank god you were there to save the poor babies life I really hope this poor baby is doing ok and they should be happy they have a loving caring owner who always has there back literally then the other babies were like well I’ll have your food then if you don’t want it maybe don’t give them something so big if they eat food to fast I have a 3yr old Belgium malinios and he eats fast too but somehow always manages to choke himself on water and coughs out his biscuits every now and again which I’d rather him cough them out than the biscuits go to his lungs and cause an obstruction I always watch him when he eats as you never know the same with my children I always sit with them when they eat it’s hard keeping track on everyone including animals when they eat as we have 8 fur/feather babies 1 Belgium malinios dog 2 hamsters 2rabbits 3 pigeons I have a 14yr old son who eats none stop like a horse and still doesn’t get any fatter lol and a 12yr old daughter who loves fruit and vegetables and macaroni cheese ( wish she would eat foods to help her gain a little weight but hey I can’t have it all I’ll take healthy eating over not eating at all anyday) and I have a husband who seems to choke on his food more than anyone else in the house the amount of times I’ve had to slap him on the back or go behind him and do the compressions on him I’m 31 and and with 2 children a husband and 8 animals brushing up on cpr and choking and how to unblock the airways of my kids husband and animals every now and again doesn’t do any harm I really hope nobody out there has to do this or go through this with any family member or animals or has to lose someone this way I recently lost my grandmother 24th November 2019 to COPD and I know it wasn’t choking to death but she suffocated to death because of her disease and it’s just an awful awful terrifying way to go and to watch is awful to my father passed away 3 years ago and when they took him off life support (by force not the families decision) watching him gasp and wretch for 1 and a half hours as his body was giving in was aweful especially with him having seizures also was aweful I would not wish that on anyone to go through what we did holding him in my arms while he gasped and the death rattle was a sound I will never never ever forget as long as I live I also lost an uncle a year after my father passed away on his anniversary to cancer then his sister my auntie got cancer thank god she’s ok now and exactly 3yrs after my father passed away on the 3rd anniversary my uncle was found dead in his room by his house mate 3rd February 2020 I’ve lost 20family members in 3 years and 3 people died on the same day on different years we lost 30 family members in 3 years on my husbands side I couldn’t cope anymore with losing anyone so that’s why I’m brushing up on choking cpr for animals and humans I’d be devastated and honestly so would my kids if we lost any of our fur/feather babies we as a family have lost so much already and I honestly don’t think my children could cope with losing anything else then this damn coronavirus comes and I have terminal illnesses and I’m terrified for my daughter who has severe asthma and ends up struggling to breath if she gets a chest infection and stops breathing when she gets a severe chest infection honestly don’t know how much more I can take as my husband has now put me on complete lockdown in my home and I’m not allowed to leave at all until coronavirus has gone from the world 😂 bless him protecting me but trying to protect my daughter in the U.K. when she’s in school and everyone around them is coughing and sneezing and has fevers PLEASE COULD I ASK YOU GUYS AS A MOTHER TO OTHER MOTHERS AND FATHERS WOULD YOU KEEP YOUR CHILD OFF SCHOOL IF SHE HAS SEVERE ASTHMA AND ENDS UP STRUGGLING TO BREATHE OFF JUST A CHEST INFECTION AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHILD WHO ENDS UP ILL EVEN WHEN SHE HAD CHICKEN POX AS A TODDLER SHE HAD IT SO SEVERE IT WAS UNDER HER EYELIDS IN HER MOUTH AND THROAT AND TONGUE ON THE PALMS OF HER HANDS THE SOALS OF HER FEET THEN SHE ALSO CONTRACTED SWINE FLU AT THE SAME TIME AS WELL AS A VERY SEVERE CHEST INFECTION ALL BECAUSE OF CHICKEN POX IT HAD RUN HER SYSTEM DOWN SO MUCH A BIT OF ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT RIGHT NOW SORRY I WENT OFF TOPIC JUST NEEDED TO GET STUFF OFF MY CHEST THANKYOU FOR YOUR TIME
