Wow, you hit the nail on the head--again. I tend to be somewhat technical-thinking (former math guy), so breaking it down logically for us really makes this easier. As you say, you observe rocks, then paint them, not from theory; but having a 'construct' to frame things with sure helps. I can’t thank you enough for this! I’ve been stuck on painting Pride Rock from Lion King for hours and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t reading as a rock. It’s my lack of knowledge of the light source and shadows, and the entire time I thought it was my colors!

I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but this video has just saved a painting from being scrapped off the canvas. Those medium values are absolutely critical. You don't realise HOW critical until you put them in.

Rocks a hard! And they’re everywhere… paint an old dugout canoe pulled out of the ocean, surrounded by rocks! Painted a fishing net on a wall, surrounded by rocks! Waterfall… all rock with a bit of water! Rocks! Painted a beautiful arch of flowers… over cobblestones and down a rock wall! Thank you!

The rig I use for teaching is the Sienna Pocade Box. I might add that in my main studio, I have my palette set in front of and underneath my canvas.

Your demonstration of conveying rock structure was great! What colours were used for the different values in your rocks?

I used a combo of Ultramarine blue and Rembrandt Transparent Oxide Red to create the neutral, the managed the value variations with Titanium white.
