This is so helpful and it only is because of your articulating the differences. I think it helped me understand after blocking a painting to achieve more realistic painting, I lessen the paint strokes left on the canvas? I enjoy an impressionistic style but think I'm more towards realism with a dash of impression? :) Diane, You're truly a knowledgeable teacher. I'll express my luck and gratitude again finding you after a year of jigging in muddy waters without catching much, artistically . Well one value of the past year, learning the difference, who's an excellent art teacher...I know this is an older video so I hope you see this...I set up each day my time for 'art class'. Now, as part of your studio, I'm stretching further forward. Be safe

I am told that the beauty of watercolor is the ability to layer and see the transparency. I would love to learn more about that and I know that selecting the correct color and color mixes to layer will be important. I am so new that anything including brush strokes would be helpful. I also seem to find detail painting easier than loose painting but I would love to learn both. Thank you so much for all you do. You are such a wealth of information.

Thanks, Dianne! I'm an over blender and trying very hard to get over it. People usually comment consequently, that my paintings are "soft". Another thing that happens is that I end up with a mid toned painting. I found out at my recent workshop that I'm timid about leaving the darks dark and so before I know it I'm blending in the complement to try to neutralize it. I asked the instructor how I can best improve my work besides more contrast and that was his suggestion - don't keep stroking the same place. So I really appreciate this new video and can't wait to see more because you always have something that ends up being so helpful to me!

Sounds like a lack of confidence, Joani. Why not try the exercises I recommended to D'Saint Yoder: I suggest doing exercises on a small format--5 x 7 or 8 x 10--where you do a completed study limiting yourself to 40 strokes. The definition of a stroke is from the time the brush touches the surface until it leaves the surface. Several of these exercises can teach you how little blending is really necessary. I might add to that to train yourself to move keep moving forward. Put down a stroke and move to the next, and the next.

I have some videos of an artist who lays colors next to each other with no blending at all. The paintings tend to look like a paint by number.

Different artists have different styles of painting. There was a brief painting movement called Pointalism post Impressionism. Check it out and see it this is what the artist is doing.

Thanks a lot, very helpful as always. I as a beginner create a lot of mud by over blending. However when you speak of the color vibrancy does over blending really affect it while blending a single hue to eliminate brush strokes(or very similar group of hues)? Or it just kills values? ie. If I over blend tints of viridian will it affect the vibrancy? (except pulling more white into darker hues thus making them muted)
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
Don't get paranoid about blending. Just use it as a tool with awareness of less is more. Scientifically, the continuous blending homogenizes the particles in the paint, so working a single hue to death can flatten out it's vibrancy. The whole blending issue is about using the process as a tool, not as an attempt to correct or cover up or product of panic.

Thank you :) This is so me. Can you make a video painting a mountain using this correct tecnique ?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
There is no correct technique for painting a mountain. The best way to approach it is to first discern what's in shadow and what's not in shadow, block that in, then work within those areas to get value and color variations you see.
