You gave the clearest explanation of how to abstract that I've ever experienced. Many artists talk a lot but don't really clarify. Thank you! I'd love to see you do more with that little study of grapes.

Thank you very much for this demo. I would love to see how to develop this further to add interest and variety with line or other shapes or mark making and while doing so not to mud the colour and end up in the mid values. Abstract is often more interesting when there are more layers of marks and hence paint. I struggle to do this in oils as they dry slowly. Yet I benefit from it as I can change edges etc. What would you advice? Much appreciated in advance.

Diane: Both a wonderful artist and a wonderful communicator. Some have one but not the other, but Diane has both attributes...along with the ability to inspire. If you were British, we'd make you a Dame. God bless your generosity of spirit. PS I'd like to see this study developed further, thanks

Wow, that is quite come complement! Thank you. Perhaps I should move to Great Britain so I could become a Dame. I do have four video tutorials that focus on this topic in Series 23 on our website diannemize.com . Better still, hopefully during this month, we will roll out a course with the same (or a similar ) title. If you've not done so already, subscribe to my mailing list in the right column of the website and get announcements each time I put up a new course.

I'd love to see a demonstration of painting general to specific. I don't understand how it's possible to make fine detail over wet paint in the manner of Richard Schmidt. It becomes a muddy mess when I try.

Wonderful video. One question, though: Dianne, you sprayed the canvas with Gamsol. I was just about to fill a spray bottle with gamsol plus linseed oil. Which is preferable and for which situations? I am really looking forward to receiving the DVD I ordered on the subject of Merging shapes in Value Fields. Be well.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
The idea is to SLIGHTLY dampen the surface in order for the brushstrokes to not resist the dry canvas. Gamsol alone works as does a 50/50 mixture of gamsol plus either linseed oil or poppy oil. Thanks for plugging my DVD.
@chayita7
@chayita7 5 жыл бұрын
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction You're quite welcome, and I thank YOU! I have another question on an unrelated subject: What is your take on painting on linen fabric instead of the usual cotton canvas? Also: am I right in assuming that you don't need to underpaint with a neutral color because , as you once mentioned, your palette is of a mid-value neutral tone? I am learning from you valuable, new approaches; but, I want to make ure I understand correctly...
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
Linen is a more durable material than cotton, considered to last much longer. But it is also far more expensive. I must say though that considering today's technology, I question whether today's linen canvases are more durable than those made of cotton. I do know, though, from experience that painting on linen is a more aesthetic experience than painting on cotton, however once I get into the painting, I hardly notice the difference. You are right: underpainting or toning a canvas is a matter of choice, not a requirement. Doing so does help the artist better judge values in the initial stage of painting. And some artists tone their canvases to give an overall color unity to the painting itself. But it is not necessary.
@chayita7
@chayita7 5 жыл бұрын
@@IntheStudioArtInstructionThank you so much, again, Dianne, for clarifying things. I had once visited an art gallery specializing in oil paintings of landscape art. The canvases were covered with imported Italian Jute, a really beautiful material. The prepared canvases, off to the side, seemed to have a layer of toned ground in neutral brown, but no gesso. I seem to recall having seen, elsewhere, linen canvases primed with gesso. Is it doable either way?I am very curious; 'though I intend sticking with the cotton canvases. Again, thanks.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
Linen needs to be sealed with rabbit skin glue, then primed in order to it from reacting with the paint. Some artists ignore archival practices and risk painting directly onto the fabric's surface, but I don't advise doing that.
