I have done about 40 skies and I have tended to use what had become almost a formula. Choose my blue, thin it down and brush it on from side to side, corner to corner, leaving gaps for where I can picture some streaming and some cumulus clouds. I was always relying on my clouds for the "variety" But even though I got better and better at doing it, I lost actual variety because the skies were all looking so same. You have freed me, finally, from approaching my picture with a formula in my thinking. Thank you for the liberation from formula. I can hardly wait to try it. Your teaching gives me a calm assurance that I can get better.

This was an excellent tip. I’ve been trying to find the perfect color for sky and I guess the reason I couldn’t find it is because it’s more than one color. It almost seems like there are tiny layers of different colors when you look at it. Thank you for your guidance on this subject.

Thank you so much for your amazing videos. I was wondering how can we achieve this effect while drawing more realistic landscapes since overblending won't work?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction3 жыл бұрын
Rahaf, the technique of blending will help. It requires observing how the hues gradually change, how the values gradually change and how the hue's saturation gradually changes, the using the blending technique to show that.

Yes, any warm color will work, depending upon the hue of the sky. The key is keeping them the same value as the sky area where they are placed.

I recommend small amounts of burnt umber for neutralising the blues. Works better than cadmiums, more controllable. Because it’s also an orange (with low chroma and value), and a more accurate complement to blue pigments.

Actually, any warm color works as long as it's in the same value range. All depends upon the actual hue of the sky.

It appears to me that ultramarine would have been a better choice right from the start as it leans to purple to start with. It may be my eyes but phalo blue always looks artificial to be and seems to easily turn green on you.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Why don't you try it both ways and see what happens. It's the variation of hue, value and intensity that we're aiming for. Just as here, my orange was a bit too yellow, causing the color to lean towards green, adding the purple back in can pull it back and help add to the vibrancy.

Hi. This is interesting but I'm not sure I'm understanding. Are you saying that painting exactly what you see doesn't make an interesting painting and that adding colours that really aren't there helps the viewer of the painting? I look for images on the internet, print them out and try to replicate them. I'd do exactly the same with your image. I have a history of photography. Is this where I'm going wrong?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction5 жыл бұрын
Let's say it another way: there are many ways to interpret a reference to make it more about painting and less about copying a reference. As artists, we are interpreting from our reference, whether imagined or visible.
