Thanks for that particular question, Noel. Honestly, and I don't mean this to be smartypants, but my best teachers have been my students who over the decades have asked stimulating questions. Unfortunately, I can't point to one teacher as my forever mentor, but I can say that Professor Torlan, one of my design teachers at UGA in the 1960's, played the largest role is pointing me in the right direction.

@ghostincarnate22 күн бұрын
can you do the same thing with makeup/face paint? and with a brighter/sort of aqua blue?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction21 күн бұрын
You can do this with any subject where there is a gradient. This works because of what color does to color, so as long as you're using the relationship of colors according to their arrangement on a traditional color wheel, it will work. No technique is unique to a subject. (Note: The Munsell wheel will not work because it's not organized with complements opposite each other.)
@jeremiahembs53433 жыл бұрын
Another way it can be done is to apply the blue first and let it dry. Then paint white where the yellow will go and let dry. And then glaze the a yellow on top of the white avoiding the blue areas. Yellow ochre would work for this. Lighter color glazes don't show very much over darker colors so that's a way it can be done. You can also mix white into your yellow instead and apply it opaquely, but with oil it might want to blend a bit either as a scumble or blended gradient. With acrylics or gouche it would be easier.

wonderful! so interesting! how does cobalt violet compare in hue to quinacridone violet and doxazine purple?
@GalleryBry3 жыл бұрын
Cobalt will be more opaque because it is an earth based pigment and the other modern organic pigments you mentioned will be more transparent. Was that helpful at all?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction3 жыл бұрын
Debi, the hues, the tinting strength and the opacity vary among them. Quinacridone violet is a transparent red-violet with moderate tinting strength, Dioxazine purple is a deep, dark transparent violet with very strong tinting strength, and Cobalt violet is a slightly opaque, similar in hue but perhaps slightly redder to dioxazine, very weak tinting strength violet.

thank you so much, it is a wonderful revelation! i always wondered how it could be done. could the same technique be used in watercolor? pastel? or different mediums would require different approach?
@lauraisnotfine3 жыл бұрын
if you control your wash carefully, I don't see why it wouldn't work with watercolor. As long as the edges of the yellow and blue don't touch directly, it should be fine
@AstaMuratti3 жыл бұрын
@@lauraisnotfine thank you, i should try it, i wonder if it could be possible to do wet in wet in one go or paper should be dry before applying any more colors
@lauraisnotfine3 жыл бұрын
@@AstaMuratti I think wet in wet will work as long as the paper is only a bit wet, meaning only the edges of the colors blend. If it’s so wet the paint blooms, I think it’ll be hard to keep the colors separate enough
@AstaMuratti3 жыл бұрын
@@lauraisnotfine yes, it seems to be it - we need to control the wetness of the paper well and be accurate with the application, thank you, i will try to find the best combination

I kinda' wish you were peering over my shoulder in London the other day. St Martin-in-the Fields gave me a jolly good hiding last Saturday. I think it's the first time a group of inanimate objects got the better of me. I'm DEFINITELY overthinking 'the things' and not losing myself in the values. I'll win the war though. I'm building up for when I'm in Amsterdam next. That's the BIG one for me. It's my dream to nail that.
