Something that helps me with juried shows/competitions is remembering that these are business transactions, pure and simple. It's like selling fruit at a farmer's market. You may be selling apples, but if the customer prefers pineapples, and they have a taste for pineapples, they probably won't buy your apple. Your apple may be the tastiest, prettiest apple, polished with all the care and love you have. But that person likes pineapples. It is no reflection on the quality of your fruit, the ability you have to grow it, or your dedication to farming. It is just a matter of whether you are selling what that particular customer wants to buy. So we just go back to our orchards, keep tending our trees with love, and know that someday, there will be a market at which the customers prefer apples - and if we show up, they may buy.

I so agree with your advice Dianne. I used to post my work on socmed and only gets few “likes.” I stopped posting for a year and only resumed posting recently and posted the work that I have done during my hiatus and I don’t feel the need to be appreciated by other people anymore. All i care is that I posted a beautiful work that I have made. Like art competition, social media can also be a downer. A teacher once said that you should not get your validation from other people but from yourself. Thank you Dianne for this video.

Thanks for sharing this, D Katz. I totally disagree with any teaching that advises getting your validation from other people. Other people don't always have the tools to validate plus, that sort of advice can totally lead the emerging artist in the wrong direction.

Ms. Mize, this is an amazing subject that you discuss here!!! Not only do I, and have almost always painted with this very attitude! I was insulted many years ago when a very educated person described me in a way that was very demeaning! After asking me the price of a painting, I told her 60. dollars! The first thing she blasted me with, was that I was a poor, black student struggling to become an artist, and you want sixty dollars? !? You could not have done anything more insulting other than shoot me! With that said... I decided that from then on... My paintings would be painted, as you just explained: "From an Island perspective"! You, in my opinion, are absolutely correct! 99 percent of this advice, has made me enjoy painting for over 50 years! Readers, be ware of trying to paint to satisfy an audience that you don't even know! Just keep putting miles and your brushes, and stay on the Island! that's if you want to keep your integrity as an artist!!!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction

Thanks for sharing that, Jimmie. The person who said that to you might have been well educated, but totally lacked wisdom and insight. Good for you moving forward and stomping that insult into the ground where it belongs.

Wow, what terrific insight you've provided on a terribly important subject! I'm a pianist, music major from the late 70s, early 80s. (I'm now also so much enjoying oil painting under your teaching.) As a young pianist, I was forced to prepare and present many juries. I generally hated the whole experience. Not wanting to sound preachy, but I've remembered Solomon's advice from Proverbs 4:23 that I learned when I was a boy which has helped me through the years: "Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life". Maybe competitions aren't such a good idea. I've done quite a bit of composing and arranging through the years along with piano performance. One remarkable theory professor (a fabulous pianist and composer, and my teacher when I was 19 years old) told me that what is important about my composing is what it does for me, not whether anyone else anywhere likes it. That's the key, as you have so excellently pointed out. You answered this question so very well (as you do with every quick tip). Thank you for sharing your heart, especially for being willing to be transparent and saying you've been rejected many times. What an encouragement for us all! David Lee

It’s really tough when you have chronic depression and literally have to MAKE yourself to do just about anything. So some ideas don’t apply. It’s a just start and commit to two minutes even if that act isn’t joyful. Yes it’s what I mostly want to do because I don’t have anything else I want to do except scratch the dogs ears or get them out everyday for a run. No it’s not exactly joyful.. sometimes when something is done and it’s decent….but it’s more a ah good ….whew….done. Start again later. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect a whole lot in return on an investment of yourself and your time and also expect it to be joyful. That cuts out a load full of people who have a weird relationship with the concept of joy. It’s not a standard based in reality… I think things like joy ( euphoria in extreme) and love are actually a kind of mental aberration or even illness. Some people think the deeply religious person is mentally ll. There is a bit of truth to that. In fact sometimes the act of painting can result in a deeper depression. Ok so ….yeah….dont make a career out of it then. Bye bye people who are depressed. As usual you don’t fit

Yes, excellent advice. I would just add that it can help, after you've licked your wounds, to be objective and see how you might improve on your work - maybe your painting is a bit overworked or has ended up being all mid tone values - at least, I know those are a couple of things that I need to improve upon in my own experience, and why quite possibly I was rejected. It's a bummer for sure but hey, there's always another time - don't give up!

Thanks, Joani. It's always been my contention that at least jurors should share with all those competing an outline of the standards by which they make their decisions, and even better, it is my believe that the juror owes feedback to those not selected. as well as those selected.

I just watched your video and you provided excellent guidance. I'm 77 and really got back to drawing and painting in about '04 after heart surgery. I paint and draw in several mediums. Money is not an issue for us. I tried some shows at the suggestion of a workshop teacher. I did sell more works than Van Gogh....but I wish I had them back. Unfortunately it was a small town in Virginia, cliques ran the art league, and I got fed up with the nonsense. I've found that some people are so wrapped up in their small “kingdom” that they forget to have a good time. I did, however, find another town with an art group that had craft shops who displayed work without competition, had feedback sessions that were constructive, and workshops that were moderately priced by older artists that were interested in instruction rather than money. I also found figure drawing workshops at a university that were moderately priced for the model fees alone. I benefited and was motivated more from these, than aggravating art leagues and narrow minded people. Unfortunately, I moved away (for different reasons) and haven't found anything similar where I live in Florida. I tried a local art league, a watercolor league, and some very high priced workshops. I don't miss competition. It's a lot of work and often a negative experience. Now, my wife (stained glass) and I (painting and drawing) do our own work and display it on Facebook for our friends and family. We gift pieces occasionally. Somebody else can worry about selling our work, when the time comes.

‘…But I wish I had them back.’ True that! I don’t think I could part with anything I’m pleased with. In the unlikely event I’m tempted to try selling something it’d have to be the failures🤣 I think I read Munch used to paint copies of anything he sold because he couldn’t bear to part with them.

Goodness, where did you find such a treasure trove of art goodness? I moved to a small town that had 5 life drawing groups and a very active art scene and the pandemic wiped it all out before I got to connect with any of them. They aren’t coming back due to rising rents. It would be amazing to find an art community such as you described above, before your move to FL. Best of luck to you! I hope you find something at least close to it in your new home.

Competition in art is really silly. It's not like chess where the game is the same. But fashion changes, and as art chases fashion, the field is weighted toward uncreativity, which is antithetical.

The fundamental techniques of painting do not change--they only evolve as the technology evolves. For example, the Greeks knew only about using the materials and techniques for using them in their era. The same is true of the composing skills. Fashions and trends come and go, but the fundamental principles are stable.

Thank you SO much for doing this video, Dianne!! It is an excellent piece of Wisdom which we can all benefit from and apply to many aspects of life:) I've had a little pressure from people to "make money" from my art. I just began oil painting during the covid shutdown, having only painted in watercolor randomly for a couple years. I really enjoy both, but the minute I feel like I'm painting to sell, it's like I freeze up!! The joy of play and creativity just leave as I'm trying to see my work from the perspective of unknown others'. I just stopped for about eight months. I've only just recently begun again. I know that people mean well, and it's nice to have encouragement and votes of confidence, but in the end, if I'm not enjoying the process then there's just no point to it! By the way, I was watching your oil painting videos long before even buying oil paints because they are just so good:) You are inspiring us!! Thank you 😊

More than once I've been puzzled by judges. It's like they're applying some sacred criteria rather than evaluating the works. That sounds like sour grapes, but I've never entered a painting in a competition. Before I enter a photograph I look at prior competitions to judge the judges

I use to listen to or read movie reviews and I found that most of the time I don't agree with the reviews from the critics. Art is the same way! Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. If someone likes what I produce I'm ecstatic; if they don't, then that's A okay! I just keep learning and keep enjoying what I like to do. Don't let anyone take your "JOY" and "Fun" away! As always amazing tips and great video's. As a beginner painter I have difficulty understanding see-through clothing. Do I paint the see-through part just as a different value and saturation or do I paint the body part that is underneath the clothing just like the rest of the body and add the transparency as a glaze? I'd really appreciate some tips on this subject. Thank you.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 2 жыл бұрын
Try looking at it the values and colors of what you are seeing rather than the see-through clothing itself. What gets in the way of most emerging painters is that they are focusing on what it is rather than the visual elements that are making it appear as it does.

Validation always come from self. At least that’s the one that matters and keeps you painting. The search for spiritual beauty, however u interpret it, is the biggest motivator. Many times you see what others don’t see, so u are adding to their enjoyment. It’s something to give to the world.

Excellent advice Dianne, yes the joy 😊 of painting is my reason for painting and learning with each painting I produce. Some I'm critical of and others seem to be what I was trying to achieve but hey I love whatever painting I set up and keen to start on the next one. Next one being Loch Fyne in Scotland, a day having a wonderful lunch at the restaurant at the Loch and then into Inverary taking photos at the harbour and now I'm eager to get going again as I start the Autumn at classes in our village so onwards and "happy painting" to all.

I watched this video some time ago, after I had entered a painting in a show and, of course, got no prize or even an "honorable mention." Your advice in this video was gold for me. I did examine my reasons for painting and why my work didn't register with the judges. I decided that I keep painting because I simply love doing it! I kept working, entered another painting in another show a few months ago. Same thing with regard to prizes: nothing. However, my painting sold for a very good price, and I believe the ones that were awarded recognition did not sell....This taught me a great lesson, and it started with this video. I cannot thank you enough, Dianne.

To me, a competition for painting is like hosting a competition for how much you love your family - it's RIDICULOUS. Not only that, but the judges tend to have bigoted criteria for what "a good painting" is - could be, that they don't like realism. Or, that they want more tonalism and less 'pop'. A friend of mine (a legitimate modern master) is rejected on a routine basis - so much so, that he just accepts it as "part of the trade" - he even allows for it in his day to day routine, and will paint three or four plein air pieces in a row (daily) in the hopes of hitting the right chords for the right judges. That, and , well, he enjoys the Monet mentality of painting the same tree at different times of day. Personally, I paint because I have this inexplicable, yet burning desire to translate what I see into the visual form. I live near London, and have architecture all around me. Memories and emotions are attached to almost everything in the city, so I have a lifetime of studies literally on my doorstep. Nights out in the West End often become a muse for my next painting. (Even the messy ones, that leave me wondering where the bump to my head came from.) And that's without getting into all of the places I've travelled to around the world. In fact, visiting Japan was probably where I first had the "lightbulb moment" to ever paint (A lot of my still life works are based upon oriental porcelain and Japanese kitchenware.) Certain tube colours will also get me going. I could be sat there, completely disinterested in painting at that moment, and you could pour out a line of Indanthrone Blue or Rose Madder in front of me and I'm off. Like, literally, from 0 to 100 in five seconds. I'm very much a pigment guy.

I paint for both those reasons; being on Social Security, it is really a necessity that I make some extra money, so art provides that for me, but I do get tired of deadlines (I'm also under contract to a publishing company) and "having" to do something. However, it really is necessary. But I LOVE painting, and when I do things for my online shop, they are my own ideas most of the time, and I get to really have fun. But these is a great quick tip, and I appreciate it so much!

I agree 100%. I set goals for myself this year for where I want to be in my art journey. I want to be growing and learning and getting better. So I did set one goal of entering some competitions BUT my intentions were that it would push me to do my very best for where I am currently on my art journey. I had no expectations of winning any prize. I just wanted to do my very best. And I learned SO much from that. But like you said, what is your motivation? Mine was to further my skills, and I believe I did. And for that, I’m very proud of myself! My hope is that a few years from now I can look back on those paintings and see how I’ve continued to grow!

Ever since I started painting, 12 years ago, I did it for someone else. I got joy out of someone else's joy, from receiving one of my paintings, or one of my greeting cards with a painting printed on it. Last month, I was the profile artist in a local magazine, and in the beginning, I was thrilled, but that soon wore off. My daughter died 5 months ago, and I've done fairly well with the grieving process, but I've only painted ONE painting since she's passed. I have commissioned paintings to do, but still keep putting them off. BTW, do you charge by the hour for a psychiatric visit? haha Love, you Dianne

Thanks for sharing this, Judy. Perhaps try just doodling in your sketchbook and journal your thoughts with the doodling and not fret about doing canvas work yet. Sometimes doing that can help break through the barrier that grief can throw in our paths.

This is the most wonderful advice. I went through similar rejection earlier this year, and the best advice I could find was to select my best work throughout the year, and only submit those gems to competitions (I had selected pieces somewhat randomly). But the advice here goes much deeper, to one's sense of self-worth and desire to paint. Thank you!

Thank you, Dianne. Words of wisdom, as always. Thank you. Yes, we all have to weigh the reason why we paint a little more to the “for me” side of the scales, instead of the “for others” side. It’s a hard lesson to learn when you start dipping your toes into the public arena but an important one.

Thank you Diane for the sound advice. I paint primarily to learn techniques & composition so that I can gift an art piece for others free of charge. If the artwork is appreciated or rejectected either way that’s ok. I did place a painting of a 1960”s GE radio in an art contest and I got second place. I chose one of many pieces of different genres and thought give it a go. Next I will paint my daughter’s cat- Milly. 🇦🇺🙏

Hi Dianne, I think I left you another sappy comment a while ago; thanks again. 🙂There's too much I could say so I won't belabor the point. I wish I could have sat down to receive your advice and learnings fifteen or so years ago when I attended a major music school. You offer a lot of wisdom here and I can sense you've come by a lot of it through your own experience and your own relationship with your work. Excellent advice! My solution to finicky judges or public is "Be undeniably good." Art is communication and artists usually want to share their art with others. I've done paintings I liked but others didn't so much, and have done paintings I wasn't happy with that others did like! A thick skin is necessary if you're going to vie for shows, awards and/or sales. Make a game out of how many rejections you can get, and strive to be Undeniably Good in the meantime. No guarantees, just more frequent wins.

Love this video very good stuff. I happen to disagree with this one, but still nice work. I like many things about this idea, but I think I mostly disagree with it. I think seeking approval and praise of others is a perfectly fine motivation. It might even be for many that the reason for drawing in the fist place was when Mom or Dad said " Wow baby, you draw this!? Nice, I'm gonna hang it on the fridge." Motivation for years to come. I think we seek approval of our peers in many domains because we are social creatures. It is almost a form of caring about others. We want to behave in ways others approve of, and we want to accomplish things others respect. An interesting topic that comes to mind with respect to these ideas is "What does it mean to improve?" What does making a "better" painting mean; that you like it more , that others like it more, both? Also an interesting situation might be one where you are very happy with your paintings and love doing them , but they don't sell because others don't like them. Will you have to get a different job so you can keep painting (which will severely cut into you painting time.) Now that is more of a question about ability to paint (afford supplies) rather than motivation to paint, so different topic altogether i suppose. Really good video, sure gets the noodle cookin'.

@@bourbon_sketcher so true, you don't wanna take the doing for others thing too far or you'll be people pleasing like you say. Im not too worried about the sameness aspect of it though because people like and respect different things. So what and how you paint might change due to who you're painting it for. I imagined myself as one who loves painting penguins ; while being surrounded by people who love lion paintings. I thought to myself , "yeah imma paint a lot of penguins because I like them , but am I really not gonna paint any lions because "im painting for myself." Naw , i thought "of course Ill paint for others, it's a type of service I can offer them." And people love it when you do things for them. If you don't wanna paint for others or paint the things they like, why would they ever care about your paintings. And if you don't care what they think about your paintings , why even share them in the first place. Why ever leave the metaphorical island?

Mixed feelings about this… I am a people pleaser. Always have been. Entering for awards is the ultimate people pleaser and rejections hits hard. However, the motivation to do better is a good teacher. Finding the balance is a massive learning curve. @@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thanks for dropping a note though. I don't hold my position on it very strongly. I think that both views have pros and cons. I enjoyed your video on the matter and think your idea of it is very fine as well. Especially in the context of the contest you mentioned. And even more especially when rejection from said contest is making you want to not paint. When were in a situation where what we love is causing us pain , it might be time to look at things from a new perspective. Thanks again for the vid. Sometimes the way I like to think things through makes it seem like I hold a stronger opinion on the matter than i really do, when really im just exploring the concept. Thanks again for content worth thinking about.

@@bourbon_sketcher That's what's up, it really is more of a thought experiment than an opinion for me though.I really don't know how things actually are, and I'm not sure if one way of viewing things is better than another, or even what constitutes 'better.' Most I can do is swing through some hypothetical and see if I find something. When I check, I always seem to land back on "I don't know."
