This is quick tip number 5.
Now that you have found your local beekeeping association and checked out the local laws. Tip #5 recommends that you consider how much your first year of beekeeping is going to cost. I predict that your first year of beekeeping will cost somewhere between $1500 to $2000 dollars. One full hive is about $360 and a nuc with bees will probably be between $185 - $200. With the recommendation to get 2 hives we are already up to $1120. Add in $200 for a jacket and gloves, $45 for a smoker, we are up to 1365 dollars. We have not even considered some of the other items like hand tools, sugar, bee schools, magazines, mites treatments and that favorite beekeeper t-shirt that you’ve got to have.
So tip number 5 is be prepared, getting started in beekeeping can be expensive. There are a few ways to save some money and we will talk about a few of those in future tips. A bonus tip here is, as a new beekeeper don’t be tempted to buy low cost used equipment. There could be diseases or other issues with the equipment that you might not recognize as a new beekeeper.
These tips are for new beekeepers that are planning to get their first bees next spring. All the best to you. That is tip #5. Thanks for watching, like, subscribe, and ring that bell…. God bless and have a great day.
