Thank you so much Diane. When you are working on canvas do you still use tombo pen or rather the same underpainting principle that you explained with a brush and thin paints of burnt and raw umber ? ( or something else? ) I bought a tombo pen watching your videos, and Inam doind some notan exercises as you explained in your earlier videos. I feel that on a bigger canvas using tombo is less fun than using a brush. Also is it a moment to add warm and cool shadows ? Or would it complicate things at this stage? I love watching your videos and learning so much from you!

Ercan, I only use the Tombow for small pieces, such as the demos I do. On larger canvases, I use a brush with thinned paint. Also, the Tombow is a wonderful tool for doing notan studies in your sketchbook. That's actually where I use it most. It's better to keep the notan without value variation, where a single dark shows the pattern of shadows. THEN, we can use that pattern and on top of the notan begin to develop the various values within their designated areas.

If doing this on a small piece, say 6x8”, could you use the Tombow pens directly on the canvas and paint over them in oils?

Yes. The Tombow ink is water soluble, but is not soluble with oil or oil mediums. The canvas should be oil free, though, or the Tombow won't adhere.

will oil paint cover the pens? Thank you
@IntheStudioArtInstructionАй бұрын
It will as long as the ink in the pen is not oil soluble.
