Very well explained. I've personally moved towards Robert Henke's school of thought over the years: he considers himself "a member of the anti-compression league". Obviously he doesn't have some personal vendetta against compressors and surely plenty of people can make good use of them, but he always found that volume automation and EQ/EQ automation got him better results. When I started working like that I noticed my decision-making improved: instead of throwing a compressor on something and moving on to the next thing, I had to make sure every peak and dip in my mix was the result of a conscious decision. It requires more work but the ease of mind knowing everything in my mix is meticulously worked out "by hand" really works for me.
