What I did was, after cleaning of course,I used a very fine point pen filled with gold paint and filled in the grooves. The gold was very bright . After that I clear coated it. Worked out great.

Here's a quick video showing a bit of sewing machine restoration that some people might find useful, I was also testing a new tripod which lets me do overhead filming which I think worked well. I'll do a video about the machine itself in the future I think.

How did your projects being sewn on the machine go? I would love to see a video when you have a chance, of you demonstrating it.

Nice find! I'm keen to see your 'findings' from the upcoming experiments too! Neat trick with the ink too.

As already mentioned, scratch out the old paint which has turned black over the years. I use nail polish to fill the impressions. Thank you for all your help.

Ian - It looks like you missed a step. Lighter fluid is a solvent which will help dissolve caked on oil and grease deposits, but when you finish with it you want to remove all traces of it too, as it is also an oil-based solvent, and leaves an oily film or residue. In the tutorial you referenced, it says to use water for this step. I actually use Windex, which I have found to clean a bit better than plain water. You could also use warm soapy (dish soap, such as Dawn) water instead of Windex. Then wipe with clean water a couple of times and let dry. I think you will find that if you don't clean off the lighter fluid the paint will not stick as well and will never really adhere well. I restore old woodworking machines and have found that it's critical to make sure any oily film is completely removed. I think that if you go back and re-do it that way you will get a much better result. I always enjoy your informative videos - keep 'em coming. Oh, and - Greetings from Texas!

Ian it will be good to see what you do with the singer. I use my singer to put holes in thin leather as I have no leather tools lol. and it works well.

What I do with those sort of things is scratch out the old paint from the letters with a pin before applying the new.

Try using a small piece of card board to scrap the wet paint off. It want go down in the numbers and take the paint back out it will only take it off the top

Could you use 90% Rubbing Alcohol to Clean instead of Lighter Fluid?
@4486xxdawson3 жыл бұрын
I would say yes but always do a small test spot on the back side to be certian its ok for the finish , i find machines in all kinds of conditions and some , the clear coat is so sun beaten it just comes off by rubbing a rag on it so its all about testing it first . Every machine is different depending on how well it was cared for , i posted a video on a 1950 nechi BU a lady was going to throw away , im so happy i found it and saved it , its one of my favorite machines .....good luck and sew on .....
