i tell you what man.. I'm a second year owner with about 8 yards. I got into it as just a way to pay my new mower off to justify getting it.. ive always loved mowing and more so now that I can see the happiness in people when I get done with their property that I'm trying to expand. you kept it short sweet and simple for blue collared folk. I'm not looking to get rich but more so try and provide a service for reasonable prices in my area. and make some money along the way to help with a debt snowball. kudos man. killer down to earth job

I worked for a big crew for a long time and just started my own business this year. My former boss found out and gave me the choice of either working for her or working for myself. I chose myself. I'm 2 months in and have about 8 clients 1 of them is a restaurant group and I do 4 of their properties for them. Need to grow more but I feel it's too late in the season already.

Danny if you haven't already go onto Google and create a free business listing. No joke, MOST of my new leads say they found me on Google. One day at a time. If you take on one day at a time you can really be successful in this business! One more thing- be sure to save money each time you are paid. Save money for taxes and save money for the business as a safety net. Do this every single time you get paid. It doesnt have to be much and before you know if you'll not only be able to pay taxes no problem but you'll also have a pile of money so you can invest in other areas of the business!

In some cities/towns you have to have a permit to go door knocking and some of them have rules as to what days/times you can do it. Sorry to hear about Barney Fife. At least you are out trying to make your business grow. Many guys simply do nothing at all and then complain that their business hasn't grown. Growth takes time, effort and intelligent work.

@@ICUTGRASSLLC yeah that’s understandable. The cops told me it was completely legal to be there doorknocking, people just didn’t take too kindly to it. Gonna try some other approaches and hit it for a late summer season!

@ICUTGRASSLLC 6 жыл бұрын
Oh I know. I'm 41 now. When I was just 14 years old, I was paid $25 to simply mow a 3,000 square foot lawn. No trimming, no edging, no blowing, no insurance. Now, as long as the lawn is 8,500 sq ft or less and doesnt have a small gate I'll mow at $40. If I have to use a small mower then I automatically charge $50. And, I wont bag unless the home is on the market and I charge $25 more to bag and I leave the grass there. Goal, for me, is to average $120 on the hour- again that is AVERAGE there are times where I dont hit that number obviously but it's a goal to shoot for.

Why haven't prices risen in the past 20 years when I started in the early 90s it was about 50 to 60 in acre here we are 2018 and there's people that will do it from 35 to 40 on the low-end,i'm tired of this business
@ICUTGRASSLLC

Amen! I think part of the issue is any time a guy loses his job, if he has a lawn mower in his garage, he can at least go out and mow lawns to put food on the table and he may keep doing that over time until he finds a replacement job. The other thing too, and I sincerely believe this, is Management Companies. They are a cancer to our industry. I refuse to do any work for them. They simply go about underbidding contracts so they can get the account and then they suck all of the profit out and expect guys to do the work for next to nothing and the bad thing about it is that there are many guys out there that have no clue what they are doing when they accept that work.

How many lawnmowers have you gone through now in 10 years just curious I'm on my 23season And I'm having serious problems financially used to have about 120 residential now I'm down to about 50
@ICUTGRASSLLC
@ICUTGRASSLLC 6 жыл бұрын
About 15 I believe. Trick I have found to keep them longer is to always run synthetic oil. 50 lawns is still quite a bit to do when you do them right. 120 is obviously more, but what I have found is there is a point where the gold loses it's luster and I dont want to do any more. What I try to do is take 10% of everything I make everytime I do a job and put it into a kitty, so to speak, for equipment that way when something does go down I can replace it if necessary or buy another and put that one into the shop and use it as a backup when it's repaired.
@heavymechanic2
@heavymechanic2 6 жыл бұрын
This is sound advice because of replacement cost vs repair cost, and the fact money is set aside for new equipment. 20% or more would be a good figure for operating cost, repairs, and new equipment purchase. Any work I do has these factors included and it usually comes out higher than some are willing to pay.

i have a problem I do have a van so what's can I do
@ICUTGRASSLLC
@ICUTGRASSLLC 6 жыл бұрын
A van isn't necessarily a problem. You can pull a trailer with a van. And, it's got a good area to keep product/supplies/tools dry. If you aren't happy with the van then I would recommend looking for a medium sized truck. You dont need a diesel powered truck with an extended cab. A simply F150 or Silverado 1500 can work. And, in many cases, a Ford Ranger will do the trick too.
